Penn State 61, Michigan State 48: Aftermisery Thread

Never again.

Well, that didn't go as well as we had hoped.  After the adrenaline rush of the first 5 minutes wore off, the team looked utterly exhausted.  While we'd obviously rather have the team play Ohio State tomorrow, yesterday's win was probably enough to clinch a NCAA berth, and so extra rest might be more beneficial than higher seeding.  Credit to Penn State, who surely have earned their first NCAA berth since 2001.

Still, that last stat is a reminder of how good we've got it.  This season, the worst MSU basketball season in the last decade and a half, is still almost certain to end with an NCAA Tournament appearance.  Today, as always, it's great to be a Spartan.

We just looked tired after those first minutes

And Battle’s run of 4 straight 3s probably killed us

Agreed

Though, aside from turnovers, we actually took better shots and played better defense – even on tired legs.

Tough loss. Good trip.

Get home and get some rest, guys.

The next team we play will not be from the B1G. Thank God.

Good game

As a long time hoops fan I’ve respected the hell out of MSU but I needed this win for my soul.lol Good luck in the dance, everybody but OSU gets my support in march.

Now that the celebration's over, lets go beat Ohio State--Joe Paterno

I agree with LVS>

We are lucky to be in the NCAA every year and perform well.ASk the Badgers being in the tourney and coming back empty year after year.
Purdue their last final four was in 1980!!!!

Rough Game.

you’d never think that you’d come to say that last year with our run all the way to end. well at least i didn’t.

sadly.

Excellent perspective.

Our best season in 10 years is being scared for our lives on the bubble. Consider today’s game a little bit of charity. You guys are in too, after all.

Bitter about the game, but happy for you guys.

Ditto

I’m glad we never have to play Battle again, but I can admit he deserved to play in the tourney at least once

Yep

Sometimes hatred is just a measure of how damn good an opponent played against you. No ill will towards Battle anymore—he is a player.

Unusual year.

Honestly makes up for the streak ending at Beaver Stadium. That sounds backhanded but I have no intentions of this.

I'll rec that

At least we know we’ll hold that “trophy” for two years, making it a lot easier to repeat this year’s feat of holding all four rivalry trophies at once.

I gotta think Illinois is out

PSU may have swiped the spot yesterday, but this is the nail in their coffin I would think.

I'm not entirely sure the Big Ten won't get 7.

Pretty hard to distinguish between the four Big Ten bubble-ish teams.

I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left-hand side.

If I had to rank them

1. Michigan
2. Michigan State
3. Penn St
4. Illinois

I think we get four but I wouldn’t be surprised if Illinois gets left out.

by steinfi2 on Mar 12, 2011 8:38 PM CST up reply actions

Haven't looked real closely yet

but I think the split between top two and bottom two is pretty clear, but it’s possible to swap the first two (we have only one sub-50 loss, although Michigan is #50; they have four but one more top 50 win) or the last two (if “last 10” is officially ignored, Illinois has just as many good wins and fewer sub-50 losses, although two are sub-100 and only one of PSU’s is).

Can anyone explain MSU's subbing?

Is it just scripted and nothing short of an act of god will change how it works? Why was Thornton subbed in for Summers at the 16 minute mark when he was playing so well?

I hear what you're saying...

but it wouldn’t have mattered today. We didn’t have it.

It's tough to accept this season

but they have overachieved by making the tournament.

I agree whole heartedly with what Joe Rexrode said after last night’s game- make room in the rafters for Kalin’s #1. He put this team on his back.

Lucas is now 15 away from reaching 2000 pts

He should be able to score 15 in our next game

2 for 2 watching BTT semi losses

I don’t think its a bad thing though. Last time I was here the semi loss to OSU begat a FF run. Not saying that’s about to happen but at least they won’t play 4 straight. Rest is best.
Sadly, they still haven’t won more than 2 in a row.

we had

9 turnovers to PSU’s 7 turnovers, so not a ton.
But our problem was was several turnovers in a row, and PSU scoring after each one.

the 4 straight 3-pt makes by Battle was killer.

by my2fish on Mar 12, 2011 7:47 PM CST up reply actions

yeah thats what i meant. we couldn’t control for squat on that run.

I am so glad we don't have to play Battle anymore.

Mein Gott, the guy never misses against us. Three of those four were contested pretty well and NBA range.

Just because I was curious, I checked

Against MSU Battle was 33-81 from three in his career (40.7%). His career 3-pt % is 33.7%. So he did kick it up a notch against MSU. But his career number is lower than I would have guessed.

Latest rpi

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/rankings/rpi/index1

Relevant:
MSU 40
PSU 43
Illinois 44
Michigan 50

If this is up to date, which I think it is, we’re currently the safest of the four Big Ten Bubble teams.

Numbers I'm getting elsewhere disagree.

May be differences as to what’s counted as road/neutral, but Penn State is listed at 39, MSU 45, Illinois 47 (Michigan’s still 50).

Either way, I think we’re good.
