UCLA 78, Michigan State 76: Aftermisery Thread

Yeesh.  I divested my emotions in this game with about 15 minutes to go in the second half, so I can't say that I'm all that despondent at the moment -- just sort of stunned that MSU got there at all.  From 23 down to a chance at the win is pretty amazing, but in the end, they came up just a bit short.

Congratulations to Kalin Lucas, Durrell Summers and Mike Kebler on great Spartan careers.  It hurts to think that this was their last time wearing the Green and White.

Season's over.  Drown your sorrows here.

Also not to be lost in the mix:

Draymond Green: 23 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals. Second triple-double of the season.

10 steals?

Damn, that’s impressive.

He meant assists

There seems to be a discrepancy b/w the MSU stats and the NCAA stats. I think he’s owed one from my watching the box score.

Left too much to do

It’s a shame we left so much work to do in the second half. I was worried about which team was going to show up, and sadly, the team that lost twice to Purdue showed up for the first half. On to bigger and better next season.

by 'Sota Spartan on Mar 17, 2011 11:02 PM CDT reply actions

Well, that's all

1- Sad to see Kalin go out like this. He’s a warrior. We’ll see your #1 in the rafters soon. Wish you could have gotten a title.

2- Izzo does well with little expectation. We’ll defiantly not be #2 next year.

3- Here’s to hoping we get a full off-season of practice without injuries. We’ll never know how much all the injuries hurt us.

4- I hope we have a couple of jump shooters to keep defenses honest. I think Byrd could be one. I hate that the loss of Chris Allen had such an impact, but if Coach Izzo thought he should go, no one can doubt that.

5- As hard as it is to admit- this team overachieved by making the tournament. Kalin is to thank for that.

6- Draymond Green is going to come back with a vengeance. He’s special. I can’t help but think he’ll recapture that next year.

7-We’ve made the NCAA Tournament 14 years in a row. Most people would kill to have our program.

Well

They made a great comeback, but they started just too late. They had so many chances early in the 1st and in middle 2nd to get back in it earlier….

Thank you Durrell, Kalin, and Mike. It wasn’t the year us fan’s hoped for but the streak of 14 years is still alivle which I think we all doubted two months ago. Looking forward to seeing you guys next year.

52 points in the second half is impressive.

Unfortunately we needed 55.

I’ll look forward to next year’s edition. Hopefully everyone learned something that will make us better next year. I’ll be out of the country for the first half of the season. Hope to see a well-tuned machine by the time I return to watch the fellas. Been lovely commiserating with all of you this season.

Great effort

I am proud of the guys for not hanging their heads after getting 20+ down and fighting back. They could have packed up and went home with ten minutes left.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

Ugh- Just wanted to get that outta my system.
I’ll really miss watching Kalin fighting for the green & white, Durrell and Kebler too.
Kudos to the team for fighting back, but why the fudge couldn’t you get a damn rebound in the first half!?!?!?

It ended how most of our losses did this season.

Couldn’t make the one play we needed.

Some thoughts:

1. Thanks to three GREAT Spartans. Kalin, whose number will go to the rafters, Durrell, who provided us with some amazing moments (and not just The Dunk), and Mike, who lived the dream of the Walk-On starting for the local University and contributing.

2. Tonight was a microcosm. We got way behind, and clawed back, and it wasn’t enough.

3. Amazing press conference, with Green defending Lucas, taking over for him, and publicly thanking him. Izzo was Izzo, which was another example of why we’re lucky to have him.

4. I’m done assigning blame. We all know the issues this team faced since the game at Kohl last year. The chaos never stopped. There are things that could have been done better, and certainly no one is without blame for the results. But for me, the time for that is over now. The guys extended the streak, and gave us some great moments (the Wisconsin comeback, the beatdown of Purdue, and some great comeback energy tonight).

5. I’m as proud a Spartan today as I was when the Maple Street Press came out and everyone thought we were #2 in the country. I am disappointed in the results, but I am proud of this program and this team, and I look forward to IzzoBall Mach 4.0 (Mach 1 ended when Bell and Dre left, Mach 2.0 ended when Davis, Ager, and Brown left, and Mach 3 ends tonight).

Go Green. Go White.

I Agree

I would call this the end of an era.

You can kind of count green as part of the group with summers/kalin but i think we are going into a new era. Especially with 6 freshman coming in(well 4 coming in).

Next year

Thanks you seniors for all the great memories and hardwork your legacy won’t be forgotten. As much as I love Kalin, Durrell and Kebler I really think this team has a bright future with the guys were bringing in. I’m looking forward to seeing Byrd, Guana, Dawson, Trice etc. I’m excited for the new generation of Spartan basketball.
In Izzo we Trust

Lineup

Trice has an outstanding stroke from 3 but for some reason I see him coming off the bench considering we run a lot of our offense through Draymond it wouldn’t hurt to make Appling the starting PG.
Appling, Dawson, Green, Roe, Payne

by mkstock28 on Mar 17, 2011 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Heres the way I look at it

Who else would? Here are 3 for sure starters next year: Green, Roe, Appling.

Appling will likely run the point unless for some reason Izzo decides Trice should start which would shock me frankly. Roe and Green are going to play the 4 and 5 since we saw this season that Green doesn’t work as a 3 (Btw I think that Izzo didn’t expect Green to be as good as he is, just judging by the large amount of centers we have). What could happen though is that Payne or Nix make a huge leap over the summer (God lets hope) and earn a spot in the starting lineup, and Izzo decides to have Roe guard the opposing 3. However this wouldn’t and couldn’t be an everyday lineup because if the opposing team has a dominating 4 or 5, then Roe would be assigned to take them out. Izzo seems to like consistancy once he’s found something that works. I also think that Byrd will likely earn a spot in the starting lineup since he’s more familiar with the system and has size.

This leaves one spot open. Really the choice comes down to Payne vs Dawson. Does Green lose more weight and prove he can guard the three or do you want him guarding a player who’s much taller than him? Lotta questions but this we know: Its gonna be a fun team to watch.

first post, and a few thoughts...

just signed up for an account after reading this blog for the last year or so. love the site. here are my thoughts after the game:

  • disappointing season, but only because we have such lofty aspirations after 14 years of incredible success. when our worst season in over a decade is also penn state’s best season in even longer, you know we’re doing well.
  • izzo is awesome. we all know this.
  • i will seriously miss kalin, summers, and even kebler. summers in the tournament last year was insane and kebler’s dunk against purdue will always make me grin. kalin, well, he’s another animal. if his number isn’t retired, that’s just criminal. i will miss him more than any other player since i’ve been closely following the spartans (i.e., when i was a freshman in 2002).
  • we will be good next year, no question. roe will be a defensive machine and will perfect his post moves, green will rack up at least 3 more triple doubles, payne will learn touch and put on weight, nix will drop weight and learn to run/jump, appling will have more confidence in his shot, sherman will (hopefully) put on some muscle, and our incoming class will contribute valuable minutes. all we need is a good offseason.

this has been a fantastic time to be a spartan, all things considered. we won a big 10 championship in football and had some thrilling games, we kept the streak alive, and we have high hopes for next year.

go green!

let's just hope izzo can get next year's team to start games better

this was a problem all year

i have faith but end this year disappointed

Thanks Seniors....ready for next season

You can’t overstate how much Summers and Lucas contributed over their careers. Sad to see it end, but it won’t tarnish their efforts. Kebler lived the walk on’s dream and was actually impressive in the second half of the season.

I have to say though, I never like to see 1st round exits, but I feel relieved to be done with this season. 30ish stressful/frustrating games and its time for some new blood. Izzo did everything he possibly could with this roster, but at some point its on the players (especially the seniors) to be held accountable. Kalin showed he cared and took control in the 2nd half of this season and will be remembered for it. Looking forward to the new season and new recruits. Dray will return to his old self and I can’t wait to see the new talent. Seeing the way Trice has performed is a welcome surprise and I hope it translates next year.

Whew.

A tough year, finally in the books. I’m disappointed with this game, but very optimistic for the future. Random thoughts:
I thought Appling showed down the stretch, a lot like Green in his freshman year tournament; the bright lights didn’t seem to phase him.
I wish Paine had wanted the ball there in that last full possession; but he’ll get better, especially when the strength and conditioning guys get a spring and summer with him and a healthy shoulder.
Delvon with No Knee Braces Whatsoever. Made this torn ACL recoverer very happy…I hope it’s an omen for his senior season.
This team will miss all the seniors, but I’ve had so much fun watchin’ Kalin. I can’t believe it was four years ago, that coming out party of his against Texas at The Palace (17 points, I think, and that famous shot of him arm-and-arm with Izzo on the sideline). Kalin Lucas—we’re gonna miss you when you’re gone.
It felt like UCLA shot, like, 726 free throws. If they had made even 70%, we’d’ve been dead.
On balance, we didn’t play a great last game, but we did play a great last half. I’m already looking forward to next year, an influx of freshman talent to mix with some great leadership, and a fresh start. Go Green!
