Baseball Drops Home Opener to Central Michigan, 3-1 - MICHIGAN STATE OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE Having just swept Michigan the Spartans dropped their home opener to the Chippewas. An aside -- Jake Boss is called the head coach in the release, but shouldn't his official title be "manager"? Doesn't that sound more like baseball?

Spring quotes: Best of the bunch A smorgasbord of quotes from starters and coaches, including Edwin Baker stating his goal for this season is "at least 2,000 yards and 21 touchdowns". It's good to think big, but I think rotation between him, Caper and Bell means he'll fall short of those marks.

It's so stupid that there aren't any protected rivalries in basketball
I mean, yeah, I don’t really want Michigan to be playing northwestern, Nebraska, Indiana, or Penn State twice a year if they’re playing MSU and OSU once.

More stupid than the protected rivalries
Is the fact we’ve returned to a time when the Big Ten Champion is determined by which school gets the luckiest/easiest schedule instead of which team is best/plays the best throughout the season. Much like the Big East – the regular season champion in the Big 10 is now meaningless.
Agreed
It is a shame. Though to be fair the regular season title was tarnished from a practical standpoint ever since we went to the tourney.
Also, protected rivalries are great until they are silly. I’ve always found our “rivalry” with Penn State in FB to be rather contrived (and don’t get me started on my Seattle Mariners and their designated interleague blood feud with the hated San Diego Padres).
Obviously bias
But I was really impressed with Dawson. He has a college body and should be a thorn in the side of every team we play. He looks like a Raymar Morgan type that isn’t afraid to knock someone on their rear.
yay football talk!
love shaken baker is going for 2k yards and 21 tds. hes got the ability. RB by committe might shoot that down though.
also read were looking to make the FB catch more passes out of thebackfield. that could add some nice wrinkles.

Some articles from yesterday’s game that make some mention of Branden Dawson and his performance (9 points and 8 boards in 14 minutes of action).
6 offensive boards!
I’m excited to see him and Day-Day work together to make us beastly on the offensive boards next year!
Hopefully they learn to work together well...
and don’t knock the ball out of each others hands all the time. I swear MSU would have had at least like 3 more wins this year if the team didn’t knock the boards out of each others hands giving the other team a ‘team rebound’ so often.
If Dawson and Day Day start....
I can see them working great together in the high low, with Green being the pick and pop guy and Branden being the slasher and catching Green’s passes around the bucket.
Who starts at SG still remains a lingering question though…

I think Byrd gets every chance to be that guy
But he’ll share time with Appling when Trice is running the point. Anderson and Kearney will get sprinkled in I imagine.

He'll be given that chance...
But I definitely wonder if Byrd has the footspeed to keep up with Big Ten guards as they tend to be be in the 6’1" to 6’3" undersized range and quick. Russell has bulked up quite a bit since showing up on campus, and I can’t imagine that added mass has improved his speed. We’ll find out soon enough though. I agree it would be nice to have that height and shot at the SG spot. Let’s just hope his footspeed is more Chris Hill than Isaiah Dahlman.

That's a good question, re: Byrd
What I wouldn’t rule out is this: Let’s say you have a line-up of Appling, Byrd, Dawson, Green, and Payne. Who is to say that Dawson won’t be an athletic, versatile enough defender to cover that quicker off-guard while Byrd handles the more traditional “small forward” on the defensive end?
Of course, it’s all match-up based and Izzo will have a lot of options to counter his opponent. I’m just thinking of a way where any of Byrd’s possible limitations might still allow he and Dawson to play together on the wing.

Balance
I just LOVE the potential of that lineup. One problem in recent years has always been the lack of balance on the roster. We had short backcourts, lacked shooters or had trouble to match up with size and athletisism among other things. With that group we are looking at the following heights: Appling 6-2, Byrd 6-6, Dawson 6-6, Green 6-7, Payne 6-10 with very good athletisism. Outside shooting is there, rebounding should be a tremendous strength and Green is a tremendous go to guy. It should also be a lineup that can be a terror in transition. Balance in your lineup is one of the most important things in basketball and with Dawson we finally seem to have that as he was born to play SF in Izzo’s system.
