Our ten is bigger than your ten! Welcome Nebraska

Nebraska officially joined the Big Ten today.  Welcome.

However this post is about math.  It is for any who would mock our conference for being mathematically challenged for being unable to count to twelve.

For those fine, educated folks who would agree with that sentiment, I would kindly refer you to an old mathematical/computer science joke: (after the jump)

There are 10 kinds of people.  Those who understand binary, and those who don't.  (Groan here.)

For those who don't, the 10 in the joke was no ordinary 10, it was 10 base 2.  Insert a "1" in front of that 2 and you get the Big Ten (10 base 12).  It's not an ordinary ten.  It's a BIG TEN!

In the Big Ten Network commercials I'd like to see department, would be Big Ten coaches running around excitedly mocking the Big 12 with taunts of, "Our ten is bigger than your ten!"

So you see, it's really because we are better than you at math that we do not have any problem with having twelve universities referred to as ten.
