D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera Plans an MSU Visit
D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, an Indiana combo guard rated a five-star by both Scout and Rivals, is planning an unofficial visit this month and is interested in taking an official as well. In this article from Monday's IndyStar blog, he lists MSU as one of the schools recruiting him the hardest. It doesn't look like he has an offer yet and the question is whether he will get one before Gary Harris makes a decision.

Interesting.
It appears, at worst, we still have an outside shot at Harris, judging by Izzo following him all over the country this last month and the latest rumblings.
I don’t get how we would get both of them. But Smith and James Young might be a nice consolation prize if Harris goes Red (which I’ve always assumed he would, no info, just a gut feeling).
There's no way MSU can take both Harris and Smith
They’d be oversigned by one for the ‘12-’13 season.
Nope
So if Dawson (or anyone else) does leave, there will be a spot open. With that class a year away though, that’s a pretty big gamble. It’s not like IU or Michigan with their oversigned ‘13-’14 classes.
Indiana is currently overcommitted by one for '12 already, too
and that’s before Harris, if I’ve got my numbers straight. I’m glad we’re not headed down that route though Izzo technically could if he wanted both players. Oversigning by one is legal.

I didn't know that U-M was oversigned for 2 consecutive classes
I could understand taking an extra commit bc of the uncertainty around Austin Hatch, but I thought he was a possible ’12 commit anyway, due to early graduation.
Can one of you clarify/provide a link to solid info? Thanks
Um, consolation prize?
Dawg thats a bleeping improvement. PG superstar in Smith-Rivera and James Young who is an instate poor mans Gary Harris who is taller, is perfect. I would love Harris because he will be a great player, but I also want Young and Jabari Parker in 13. I think that since Parker seems like a 4 at best, more likely a tall 3, and Young is also a wing, Harris hurts the chances of nailing both. On the other hand DSR has PG capability, more roster spots for wings.
And for those who think Jabari Parker is an impossibility: He’s not. The dude hasn’t made any visits yet and Izzo is actively recruiting him. Izzo doesn’t pursue something if he knows it’s a lost cause. I think that the odds are unlikely, but very very possible.
MSU and DSR
I’m not sure how serious it is. It isn’t like MSU to string someone along but it looks like DSR is putting in as much energy as MSU. If MSU invites him for an official as a follow-up, we might have reason to think MSU is looking seriously at him. That list he talks about is pretty broad, almost like he’s searching more than being recruited but that’s as far as I’ll go with speculating on that. A little weird all around.
I’d be very surprised if Izzo offered without being confident Gary Harris was going elsewhere.

Purdue and Indiana
Does anyone have any idea why Purdue and Indiana would not be recruiting DSR? Is it because he committed to Xavier and then they filled their classes?
First come First serve
Both seem to be excellent gaurds. Izzo starts recruiting DSR because you can never truly know what Harris or any other prospect will do. He tells both that he will take the first to sign, and recruits both hard.
Interesting development
I don’t know a ton about him, but based on his rankings and his ability to play pg I think I’d take him over Harris. We definitely wouldn’t need a pg in the 2013 class if we signed Smith-Rivera.
Either/Or
Just from the amount of time Izzo has spent at Harris’s games this past July, it’s clear Harris is Plan A, DSR is Plan B. But it definitely seems like Izzo wants to bring someone aboard in 2012, rather than banking the scholarship. And who can blame him? When you get a chance to get a top-40 caliber player that can help your team, you do it.
James Young…I know most of us like him and would love to see him at State (myself included), but is anyone else skeptical of it happening? Seems like if we get a wing in 2012 (Harris or DSR), we’re looking bigs in 2013 (Parker, Woodson), and guards Drake Harris and Tyus Jones are already targets for 2014. I’m just struggling to see how Young will fit into the picture. Of course there is always attrition and whatnot (2013 is still a long ways away), so maybe I’m just overthinking the future too much.
I think
that Young is a pretty big guy, and yeah if both Harrises and Tyus Jones sign, say goodbye. But say DSR comes, to play PG, theres a roster spot for James Young and then we just pick between Drake Harris and Tyus Young.
i like this
anytime you cna get a 5 star you take it. i dont think this is a consolation prize at all. when youre a top 20 player youre freakin good.
This has Fife Dog written all over it
Would he even be getting looks if Coach Fife isn’t here?
I’m all for it if the kid is the real deal which based on the one game I saw him play, he can definitely score.
The only problem I have is do we really want to go down this road with a kid who has already decommitted once and is now heading for prep school? Certainly once he gets to Oak Hill he’ll draw attention from east coast schools too. Based on Luke Winn’s SI article http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/luke_winn/08/01/commitment.trends/index.html?sct=cb_t11_a0 this can be dangerous.
My guess is the coaches are gambling a little bit here.
With the knowledge that this schollie belongs to 2013 and will come in handy they’ve gone all in for Gary Harris knowing it’s an uphill climb. To raise the stakes they also pursue DSR knowing it’s extremely risky because(1. this could insult Harris and 2. DSR has commitment issues) but knowing they can’t really lose.
Either:
Harris commits = JACKPOT!
DSR gets an offer and commits and Harris goes elswhere = nice consolation
both go elsewhere and the schollie stays in ’13, none of the current guards feel threatened and have to transfer leading to harmony in the locker room = Not Losing
