Around SBN: Watch Out For Cowboys UDFA Tim Benford

It's now being widely reported that Gary Harris will visit MSU on Nov. 5, the last of his three currently scheduled official visits. On Oct. 1 he will be at Purdue and follow that with a visit to Indiana on the 15th. The early signing period starts Nov. 9. What do you think about receiving the last visit? How excited are you (still) about Gary Harris? Discuss away!

Hooray!

But now I have a question:

GH is making all three of his visits on home football weekends for the schools. I’ve heard that he is a stuf fb player, & could play at most FBS schools.

Do we know if he is considering being a dual sport athlete in college, or is his focus going to be on hoops alone? Also, even though the article said he will only take one or two more of his 5 officials, could he take additional visits, either to one of his top 3, or other schools, as a football recruit (as opposed to a hoops recruit)? Or is a HS athlete allowed 5 athletic visits, period?

Thanks

assumtion following

i have season tickets very close to the first row for football. the ND game last year had crap loads of both football and basketball recruits. So I will assume that’s why. I cant imagine hell be a two sport athlete.

I was at that game last year, sitting right behind all the recruits.

The recruits were interspersed with a boatload of past Spartan hoopsters – Cleaves, Bell, Randolph, etc.
I gotta believe that game (Little Giants), the atmosphere (nighttime at Spartan Stadium was absolutely electric), and the former/current pros sitting with them had to leave a positive impression with the kids.

I like our chances

I was looking at some recruiting class rankings for 2012 yesterday and I just don’t see how it won’t be either us or Purdue. I know I could be wrong, but Indiana already has a loaded class of about 9 guys so I just don’t see Harris going to Bloomington.

I think having the last visit is a good sign. Give the others a last shot before coming “home” right before the early signing period. Makes perfect sense to me.

Conor Boyle...

Just don't see him not going Crimson.

Too many friends, too close to home.

Fervently hoping to be wrong.

Maybe, but...

…if it’s merely about friends and proximity he’d probably have committed to IU by now. As well, his parents went to Purdue which has a program full of potential and a solid class coming in for 2012. It’s also close to home for him.

All of those things certainly play in. But the size of the 2012 class Crean has is a real obstacle. And quite frankly MSU is by far the best program of the three.

Meta-comment:

The night before the defending B10 champs open their football, we are talking about basketball. Because in the Izzo era, there is never a time when it’s not okay to talk about Spartan basketball.

And we don't get yelled at for doing it

Unlike the LSJ Rexrode chats where it appears they block basketball questions.

It looks like GH may take all 5 visits. Lville is doing an in home visit this month.
Comparoni is the first one close to the program to say MSU is in good shape that I’ve heard.
Either this kid is exhausting all options to avoid going to IU or he’s really wide open.
If he and his family actually make it to EL he’ll have a hard time saying no.
I wonder if he will. His IU visit is for midnight madness and I’m sure he’ll be compelled to commit before leaving.
At any rate, this is finally winding down.

IU visit is their midnight madness?

I don’t like the soumds of that.

Trying to put a postive spin on that....

I think he is visiting IU at their best and brightest, and that is their only chance to sway him from going Green! They are way overcomitted, so unless he does get a FB scholarship, that is a pretty high hurdle for Coach Crean to overcome. Also didn’t Coach Izzo attend a crazy number of his AAU & HS games indicating major interest….. my fingers are crossed!

Yep

and word is that they’re actually moving “Hoosier Hysteria” from Friday to Saturday so that it doesn’t conflict with Gary’s Friday night football game.

Yeah, I've never understood the

“we don’t talk about bball until….” philosophy. Seems to me that Hollis (and Izzo) planned all along for us to be one of those schools with strong football and bball programs. We’re right there too!

You'd think the newspaper would embrace this

I think having one beat writer that covers both sports is a little unfair though and Michigan is a state where people think basketball should only be discussed between Dec-March after football has ended. Basketball doesn’t really have an offseason anymore though. All the best prospects play year round and coaches recruit all year. Fans of both sports shouldn’t have to be admonished for asking a basketball question in September.
At Illinois they’ve got it right, a guy for football and a guy for basketball who does a weekly chat all year.
I hate being envious of something orange and blue but I do wish there was a dedicated beat writer for MSU basketball only.
