Nike unveils Michigan State Pro Combat uniforms

Michigan State will wear its Nike Pro Combat uniforms Oct. 15 vs. Michigan.

Nike unveiled a photo gallery of the Michigan State Pro Combat uniforms on its Facebook page this morning. Here's the statement from Nike, via MLive:

"The redesigned base layer facilitates the uniform's overall innovation, delivering the ultimate in lightweight protection for maximum speed," Nike reports. "Strategically placed seams, pads and cooling zones also help minimize distraction and optimize protective coverage."

MSU will wear the uniforms Oct. 15 against Michigan. So, what say you? The look is certainly nothing close to the traditional MSU look or colors, but regardless, I think they look pretty good.

Gold or Bronze?

I know it says bronze, see here, but – it really looks Gold to me..

I do like them though. The shoes are my favorite – I wonder if we can buy them?!

yes

Nike releases all the Pro Combat trainers. My flag football team has used the Molon Labe for our jerseys for two years so I’m pretty amped about that.

meh

They look kinda high schoolish. Eric Gordon would be familiar with that school. I like the gloves and cleats. Bronze looks goldy to me, maybe I’m color blind?

Over all don’t love them or hate them. And I’m sure they’ll grow on me

meh - they're OK

but come on, our color are Green and WHITE. Not Green, black, and bronze.

I wonder what the writing says – can’t get a very clear look at it to translate from Greek.

from the press release
Echoing the cry of King Leonidas, the back of the collar is inscribed with the words "Molon Labe," the Spartans’ defiant challenge to the competition to "come and get them!" Gloves complete the traditional Spartan headdress look. Armed with intensity and determination, MSU will fight on the battlefield until the last team is standing.

They are a third uniform

I'm with you

Not really bad at all.

My favorite parts? Gloves & helmets.

Least favorite? Adding the new colors.

Let’s just hope the recruits that will probably be filling the stands that day love ’em!!

My only complaint is I wish the 'bronze' was actually bronze

I don’t mind the change in team colors, for a game at least. And, who the hell cares what the team jerseys look like, as long as they squash the Wolverines?

by cwel87 on Sep 13, 2011 9:30 AM CDT up reply actions

With regard to the gold/bronze...

…my guess is that they had to go with a slightly lighter color to get the contrast with the dark green. If they went with a darker bronze it might have been just too hard to see the numbers.

As far as looks go

it looks pretty awesome.

Is it right for MSU? I don’t know. Bronze isn’t exactly MSU’s color, but I get the whole “300” reference. It’s just different, and out-of-the-box.

I’m gonna aire on the side of “that uniform is badass”. It still looks cool

As long as Cousins can spot receivers in balck and bronze as well as white

then I have no problem with our team wearing these for a game.

fancy jerseys

have nothing to do with an education. it’s just for marketing and to sell more stuff.

by andyprocombat on Sep 13, 2011 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Nice handle – a vested interest?

MSU is a public university – it educates. It’s not a private company. It’s not a marketing firm. A public university doesn’t need to “sell more stuff.” It needs to keep its academic standards high, make breakthroughs in research, help people in their careers, and compete with class in athletics. Even the athletics should serve as one arm in the overall objective of education.

Nike has nothing to do with any of this. It’s a gigantic private corporation using a public institution for its own profit.

by WatersDemos on Sep 13, 2011 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

But it takes money to...

keep its academic standards high, make breakthroughs in research, help people in their careers, and compete with class in athletics. So they will keep selling stuff, and trying to keep selling more stuff.

And Athletics may have its own separate budget…but it acts as the catylist for a lot of major fund raising opportunities for the general goals of the school. So you can’t treat Athletics like its a seprate entitiy.

I agree

with all the things you said, and I’m not a particular fan of these, nor 80% of the other Pro Combat jerseys, but I am glad that Sparty got these jerseys. Having just read an article about an elite basketball recruit not choosing Baylor because he didn’t like their colors or the fact that they were an adidas school, I do appreciate the boost in recruiting this does for us. College recruits are very superficial and materialistic and Nike does a fantastic job with building hype for their schools and their products (e.g. "The Opening). This will give Sparty more publicity and national notice.

Go (Pine) Green, Go White (Gold, Black)!

Also, Kirk Cousins has piercing blue eyes.

Cool, but not what I was expecting

So for all that hype, they just switched up the color scheme? Fonts and styles are all the same, just added bronze and black and took out white. Having looked at the other Pro Combats for other schools, I was expecting something a lot more creative/edgy. That said, they do look cool.

I'm no designer

But I feel like the same look could have been accomplished by going with a silver that is a little closer to our traditional white uniform.

But aside from the Gold/Bronze I think they look pretty cool. There was an interesting read on grantland.com a couple weeks ago about the impact of Oregon’s uniforms on their program.

Despite the fact that many of us wish they had a more traditional look, supposedly recruits and players love our regular new uniforms.

Remember, this was allegedly an idea Gholston came to Dantonio with. I get why they do these, and all in all this looks pretty good in my opinion, and my guess will be well recieved by people who care about these things a lot more than I do.

Re : Bronze

There seems to be a common misconception that bronze wasn’t part of MSU until Nike came along. If you look at the history like Nike has you will see that our first jerseys weren’t green and white but were black and gold and also had wings!! (Link for jerseys : http://bit.ly/oQYDEF) . Personally I like bronze much better because of our history with bronze this incorporates our world famous statue into our uniforms :

When John Hannah became president of Michigan State College in 1941, he commissioned assistant professor of art Leonard D. Jungwirth to design a statue of an athletic Spartan warrior. Jungwirth sculpted a statue known simply as The Spartan, which soon gained the nickname of “Sparty”. Though Jungwirth originally designed The Spartan as a bronze statue, it had to be cast in terra cotta due to World War II rationing of bronze.2 The terra cotta statue stood on the banks of the Red Cedar River, until 2005, when the university replaced it with a bronze replica. The original Spartan was moved into the stadium, where it remains on display to this day.

Hope this helps

Who is "our"?

This appears to be your first post. I like the historical research, but it’s presented here as Nike talking points. “If you look at the history like Nike has . . .”

My guess is you’re somehow interested in this issue, perhaps being paid. You’d be more persuasive if you were upfront about it IMHE, and not pretending to be one of “us.”

by WatersDemos on Sep 13, 2011 9:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Perhaps not to you, and I respect that.

But it comes off to me as if Nike has paid people as part of its marketing scheme to come on fanboards, pretend to be “one of us,” but really to actively shape/influence the discussion/reaction, instead of letting us decide for ourselves.

It strikes me as deceptive and manipulative.

However, if someone had said, “I’m a Nike representative, and we did the uniforms this way because of the history, and I’m happy to answer questions, etc…” I’d have very little, if any, problem with it. That would be a way of coming directly to the people to have an honest dialogue.

I could be wrong about Mr. Leonidas here, and I hope I am. I’ve read his response below, and I’m still not buying it. But if I’m wrong, apologies, sir.

Re : Not buying it

Waters,
Thank you for your honesty and I understand your skepticism. I am not trying to convince anyone of liking the uniforms just that they should understand the history of bronze with MSU. I am a proud alum and a fan not a paid rep for Nike. Either way enjoy your day and GO GREEN!

by leonidas300 on Sep 13, 2011 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Re : Our

You are right I just signed up and your right I have interest in this issue specifically being an alum from MSU and I do care how our brand is perceived to everyone else in the country. Hollis is doing something that we have needed since the 90’s bringing the flair back to MSU and I am 100% in favor and support of everything he has done.

I respect Nike and Hollis praised them when the jerseys were unveiled for spending time at MSU on their own dime to help us build our brand which was in dire straits. True their logo wasn’t the best but the color standard was absolutely necessary. When I was at Spartan Stadium and part of the Izzone everyone (outside of the Izzone) had a different shade of green and to be honest we looked second class. Now there is uniformity thanks to Nike and Hollis; Nike is building our brand through great efforts and they deserve to be lauded and praised for it. Izzo made a point several years ago that if you looked at the final four teams usually Nike has 75%(not exact) of the teams in the final four that is that way because everyone knows Nike and recruits seem to like their style and camps that they run.

I have posted on other forums and to be honest just signed up to comment on this as I post on other forums. I don’t have any other motive than the love of my university and their athletic department. I don’t have any reason to comment usually as I enjoy being a reader on this blog. Once again apologies if I am not one your but I am one of Michigan State.

Our original colors didn’t include white and I don’t see anyone complaining that the “new” uniforms back then didn’t include the original colors. Besides, who cares? Its for one game, the “gold” (actually bronze) is barely there. Its on the numbers and the helmet. Big whoop. As long as the players are pumped to beat the crap out of Michigan, I’m fine with it.

You still would've complained with the slightest bit of gold though...

Say it was reversed. What if the gold had been the Spartan helmet and then the football helmet would’ve been green? You would have still complained over any gold, so why does it matter? It is what it is. The players, you know the ones who actually wear the uniform, not you or me, wanted to wear this. They’re the ones that get to suit up in them. So, honestly we shouldn’t be complaining. Like I said before, if it gets them so amped up that they absolutely destroy Michigan, I think its worth it.

All in all, who cares? Its one freaking game. If this were for the National Championship game or the B1G championship game, I would complain, but its a regular season Michigan game. Big deal. Let the players have fun.

Don't forget guys

This is meant to be a 1-time only wear against UM. It hypes the players, and brings in more money and higher recruits. Plus, I think it’ll look pretty cool on the kickoff when 11 Spartans run down the field to pummel UM’s returner

Think more of the advantages, the “wow” factor, and long-term gains, and less about what is traditional

I don't mind these at all. I like the historical aspects.

2 questions:
1) Will any of this stuff be for sale? I want a pair of those gloves!

2) Have we seen any players from other schools comment about the technical aspects of the pro combat system? It’s supposed to be a whole new style of padding and such, so I’m curious as to how well they are received from a comfort and performance standpoint.

ladies and gentlemen

Unless you are a 17 year old, 6’5 270lb defensive lineman that runs like a rabbit and hits like a freight train, no one cares if you think of them. Cousins likes them, Gholston likes them, my guess is that more than a few recruits will like them. They aren’t trying to attract 40 year old 5’10 overweight desk jockeys. The kids like them, and I like winning more than I like losing, so if it helps get players that win, (and it does) I don’t care what they look like. Just win.

I’m a current student so don’t bash me for this, but I don’t see the big deal with there not being any white. Who cares? It’s one game. We’ve never EVER done anything like this and its great publicity for our school. The black and green look sick, and honestly, its just a little bit of bronze. They made it a little lighter so the numbers wouldn’t look to dark against the jersey.

All in all these could be way, way worse, like Boise St.‘s and Virginia Tech’s from last year. Those were the epitome of atrocious. For our uniforms, they only changed the colors to our basic design scheme. Whoop-de-doo.

Anyone who is completely against these and who are appalled need to stop taking yourselves so seriously. We’re Michigan State. We know who we are. We are the Green and White. I don’t believe the world will end on Oct 15 when these bad boys are rolled out. As long as Michigan is pummeled while Gholston, Bullough, and Co. wear these, I think we’ll be OK.

As a current student, I have to say that I really like the uniforms a lot. Most of the people I’ve talked to seem to have somewhat of the same feelings but others agree that the lack of white is definitely a negative. And it could be a lot better, but it could also be a lot worse (we’re not Oregon, which is good). I was hoping for more of a throwback-y thing like OSU had last season. I mean, this maybe does have some basis in historical uniforms, and I can see them making the whole “300” connection (which is annoying, but whatever). I just wish there weren’t as MUCH bronze in it. It looks like Baylor. Or USF. Or the San Jose Saber Cats. I actually like green and gold/bronze together but it’s a bit much for MSU.

Dantonio with the definitive Take in my opinion

This is from Rexrode’s blog update.

UPDATE: For the record, Mark Dantonio likes the uniforms.

“In this day and age, this is about recruiting, this is about young people,” Dantonio said, “this is about being on the cutting edge of things.”

by trivialstuff16 on Sep 13, 2011 2:51 PM CDT reply actions

what kind of recruit decides his team by the jersey?

“I was going to go to USC, but those spartan jerseys are so cool I’m going there.” yeah right.

by Kurt Mensching on Sep 13, 2011 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I doubt it's very often as blatant as below

But there are lots of reasons to think that uniforms play a much more important role than those of us on the outside of the system would like to think.

I thought this was an interesting read:

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6909937/how-does-oregon-football-keep-winning

by trivialstuff16 on Sep 13, 2011 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions

And also, I should clarify further

I didn’t mean Dantonio’s quote was as literal as maybe it came across. In other words I don’t think Dantonio is trying to say, nor should we believe that if we wear cool uniforms once against Michigan we are going to get better recruits.

It’s the second half of the quote that I think is important. I think recruits DO care about playing for a program that is committed to being on the cutting edge, being on national TV, etc. If you don’t want to believe that recruits are so shallow that they are picking teams based on uniforms, then believe the opposite, that they are so sophisticated that they are actively considering what program is going to give them the best opportunity to play on the biggest stage and market themselves.

Really the answer is probably in between, but I do think these uniforms have a role to play

You'd probabaly be surprised, Kurt

Like 'em a lot!

I agree with the Dantonio quote above. And for me, the important question in recruiting is not what uni you get to wear, but that the players initiated and had direct input in the idea. So all the marketing and hype machine noise (which is considerable) aside, Gholston (and the team) drove the process as I understand it. That’s the unifying component of this for me. Go Green!

Love em.

Bronze is already on the road jerseys that debuted last season, so I don’t get the angst.

Getting rid of White...outs

I like the uniforms personally, for one game… then give me back the dark green helmets (the rest can stay). For the rollout though, I also think no one should have seen these until game time with the players coming out of the tunnel. Just like we’re all gawkin’ and checking out the pics, I think a few um folks would have taken a little bit of time to notice… anyhow that’s just my vote, and apparently no one asked me.

There seems to be a few folks upset by the lack of white – I won’t rehash most of what everyone else has said in hopes of soothing those souls. However, I will say one white “tradition” I think we need to get rid of is the “White Outs” at basketball and football games. They are pointless. When any opposing team looks up into the crowd and sees a bunch of people in white shirts, that team could be in their own home arena anywhere—it happens against pennstate, wisco, you name it… fans wearing the team color white are not threatening to schools that also incorporate white into their own uniforms (particularly their away jerseys – even um’s football away jersey is white). Regarding the lack of white in these new jerseys, the darker look is a little more intimidating.
For those of you associated with the Izzone and other student sections, please arrange for people know it’s a Green Day and end the “white outs” – not that many students are listening to that much Billy Jo Armstrong and Trey Cool these days, but there’s gotta be more than those current undergrads who actually know what a bottle of white out is, own one, and have ever used it.

Could be a lot worse, but a few suggestions

1) Lose the black. You either go monochrome (all-green) or get some contrast (white or maybe bronze pants). The “SPARTANS” lettering on the front and the nameplates should be bronze if they’re going to stick with the green-and-bronze motif instead of white.
2) I’d kind of like to see the “SPARTANS” on the front transliterated into the Greek alphabet (ΣΠΑΡΤΑΝΣ if they want to stick with all-caps, or Σπαρτανσ for mixed-case). If you’re going to go so heavily with the ancient-warrior theme, go all out.

I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left-hand side.

I'm with you

I think black is lazy for designers. If you can’t make it good make it black. The Greek text would be sweet, first original idea I’ve heard among the “WHAT NO WHITE? OH MY GOD WE MIGHT AS WELL TEAR DOWN THE STADIUM WITHOUT OUR TRADITION!” crowd. However the overwhelming point here is that the players and recruits love them. The jerseys aren’t for us. They aren’t for the 1948 alumnae that’s eligibility ran out during WWII.

Let's put this in perspective

This is essentially a $200,000 gift from Nike, and it is all in our benefit. The fact of the matter is, both the current players and recruits like them. Nike basically gifted us with free marketing and boosted our recruiting.

Mind you, if these were baby pink helmets and lavender pants, I’d be pissed. But they’re sleek. They’re cool. They’ve got a well-thought-out Greek theme. The players like them, and recruits will think they’re pretty badass. It’s a win-win. Who cares if they stray from green-and-white. It’s not permanent!

Just my $0.02

The more I see them, the more I like them

I am sure I will love them on Game Day when the wolverweenies are face-planted by our D-Line.

But then again, I also kinda liked Maryland’s unis, at least as a one-off thing. So I’m not really the curator of cultural taste.

Agreed

They could go out on the field dressed like John Daly and I wouldn’t care, as long as they are on the winning end of the game.

Anything looks good when it is beating U of M. Even this.
