Outback Bowl Postgame Thread: MSU 33, Georgia 30, 3OT

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Well, that was exciting. The offense couldn't get anything going in the first half, but the defense kept us in it (even adding a pick-six to bring us within two points) and the offense finally got back on track, at least enough to even up the game in the final minute with a Keshawn Martin catch taking the ball down to the 1 yard line and a Le'Veon Bell bulldozer run to take it from there. It looked like it was over when Kirk Cousins was intercepted in the first overtime, but Georgia made no real attempt to move the ball forward and paid the price when their 42 yard FG attempt went wide. Both teams traded FGs in the second OT. In the third OT, a high but catchable third-down pass to Martin was dropped and forced us to attempt another FG, but the defense held strong with a near-interception, a William Gholston sack, and finally a blocked field goal by Anthony Rashad White (I think; box score doesn't say, my DVR won't let me rewind to it, and the wire recaps aren't up yet).

First bowl win since 2001. Back-to-back 11-win seasons. A full recap will have to wait for sanity to return. For now, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

HOLY CRAP WHAT A GAME!!

YES YES!
so proud for the seniors…they are the best.
THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

What a game

Didn’t Corso pick UGA because of Special Teams? And our special teams at the end of the game are what decided it. I find that funny.

by hascow on Jan 2, 2012 4:33 PM CST reply actions

Corso picked UGA.

How about at the halftime show. Herbstreit and Pollack (UGA All American) making fun of MSU.

by spartynation on Jan 2, 2012 4:35 PM CST up reply actions

Seriously.

I was gonna say something too. It was mostly from Herbstreit.

I’ll leave my middle for him right here…

by The Birchman on Jan 2, 2012 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

herbstreit better eat crow

the things he were saying were pathetic. he said “some B1G teams have a chance to come back, but MSU and UGA isnt even close.” he also said B1G defenses only put up gaudy stats because of B1G offenses. MSU would have a top flight SEC defense, no question.

by stevedarsh on Jan 2, 2012 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

What a joke.

I forgot about his little “Defenses aren’t good, the offenses are just terrible” remark about the B1G.

I, like you, hopes he calls himself out after that.

by The Birchman on Jan 2, 2012 4:56 PM CST up reply actions

Rose Bowl half-time ...

Corso gives MSU props. About fucking time, old man.

by Cussin' Jack on Jan 2, 2012 6:14 PM CST up reply actions

How's that working out, Herbie? LOL

I was mad at Herbstreit the whole rest of the game because of that. I think he was just mad because OSU was down. Anyway, nice call, seer. Can I get your pick for the presidential election?

Fantastic, just fantastic

Great way to send our seniors out.

Amazing

does anybody know how many TFL the team had in total? has to be some sort of record.

by stevedarsh on Jan 2, 2012 4:42 PM CST reply actions

What's up with ESPN?

Still no coverage up whatsoever.

by steinfi2 on Jan 2, 2012 4:43 PM CST reply actions

Kirk mutha-throwing Cousins!

If that 85 yd drive with less than 2 minutes left in regulation isn’t an amazing draft audition specimen, i don’t know what is. Can’t wait to see where he ends up.

by StickyGreen on Jan 2, 2012 4:43 PM CST reply actions

Unbelievable

The most amazing thing to me was the POISE that the showed after being down 16-0 at the half. The tired cliche of Same Old Spartans dies TODAY, with this win. They have shown again and again during the Dantonio era that when it comes down to it, when the game is on the line, they will step up and make it a game. Even when they lose, they are in it to the last seconds. You can’t overestimate what this win and these past two seasons do for the program.

I’m so proud of the TEAM, for what they’ve accomplished. Looking forward to next year, and many more years of success.

Go green.

Culture Change.

It’s a beautiful thing. We might be young next year, but the youngster were around to witness this.

by esmith7273 on Jan 2, 2012 4:49 PM CST reply actions

Yep, persistence, tenacity, poise

Oh, and special teams, lol. Fuck the SEC.

by Drew Perkins on Jan 2, 2012 4:51 PM CST reply actions

Not to mention a not insignificant amount of luck.

Which is part of the game, too. Glad it was with us when it counted.

by lesmanalim on Jan 2, 2012 4:56 PM CST up reply actions

Since you mentioned luck

We should also mention the two blocks in the back that sprang UGA’s kick return, and ARW getting tackled when he was about to shove the UGA lineman right into their QB on their long TD. Not saying we didn’t get some luck (gust from the gods FTW!), but Georgia can’t really gripe.

by RoninX on Jan 2, 2012 7:06 PM CST up reply actions

Eatin babies

The d wasn’t just tackling, but crushing people. So many hard hits in the backfield. Worthy, please stay! This could be a #1 defense next year if so. Still VERY good if not.

big ups to our dextrous holder

He personally made Giampapa’s next three years a lot nicer. Hope the dope understands just how much teammates ultimately depend on each other.

But still, game ball to him, he made some trmendous catch & placements for Conroy. GB to Sadler, too.

Right

But his holds bailed out our substitute long snapper who was only in because Giampapa got himself suspended.

It's still painful to watch the Rose Bowl after MSU being so close

Today’s win helped a little.

It also helps that the game is somehow exceeding the rediculously high expectations I had for what kind of shootout it was going to be.

YEEAAAAGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s all I got to say. What a team win, program win, statement win. We beat a good SEC team today and it’s a win that everyone who played had a part in. Something like 20 TFLs, outstanding punting (!?), great clutch play from Kirk and the gang of merry runners/receivers. Wow, do I respect Georgia after watching this game. We don’t have to give a rat’s behind what the boys at College Gameday have to say, either. They can all go to hell.

by heresjohnny on Jan 2, 2012 6:23 PM CST reply actions

Screw College Gameday

Fowler is the only one who gives MSU any respect. The other three clowns up there are garbage, Desmond how many national titles did you win at UofM…0, Herbstreit was a career backup and Corso is half drunk up there. Go VT tomorrow beating GA is more impressive than beating any team from the ACC and I don’t care what bowl it is.

Probably until next years

Next year’s seniors need to win at least 10 to pass them, and the current sophomores need to win 16 in two years to become the winningest (unless next year’s class wins 10, but then they would only need 7 wins their senior year to take the claim)

by MSUDersh on Jan 2, 2012 7:11 PM CST up reply actions

This.

He’s a good player, but seems to have some maturity issues. He didn’t play very well today either on a big stage, so that won’t help his draft stock.
I don’t blame guys for checking their draft stock, but I hope Adams is smart enough to not roll the dice and actually declare for the draft if the projections aren’t high.

OT: but....

Holy cow, just checked out MSULaxer’s post on OTE. I just can’t believe the level of MSU hate over there this year. I know its the internets but its gotten to the point where its making it hard to enjoy the rest of the content.

by RoninX on Jan 2, 2012 7:28 PM CST reply actions

when I read that thread

it sounds like MSU Laxer is crying over spilled milk.

He’s expresses a totally whiny attitude. Even if one agrees with his points and reasons, his tone is childish. He was asking for a bitchfight if you ask me.

None the less, I rooted against UW and will root against um as well.

Couldn't disagree more

You simply can’t set the stage for the importance of this game without discussing the might-have-beens for this team the last two years. The incendiary reaction to any MSU fan that points begs to differ with anyone else’s “swag” just sticks in my craw at this point. I guess I’m thin skinned though.

by RoninX on Jan 3, 2012 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

by Seer on Jan 2, 2012 9:50 PM CST up reply actions

I'd say they have more to complain about

given that they continued to try to run right up the middle the entire 2nd half even though it never really worked. Then with the 2 bad throws for ints, we were right back in it. Even then, too many runs up the middle for punts in the second half.

by Thibtw on Jan 2, 2012 10:10 PM CST up reply actions

We would do the same thing

Pro-style offenses rely on a running threat, so you have to continue to throw in runs or else they just key in on the passing game.

Congratulations

I won’t lie, I think UGA’s play calling certaintly helped you out.

That being said, the leadership of Cousins and the desire to stay focused and win is what brought you through, and what UGA is lacking. Nice job on keeping your eyes on the prize rather than going to the zoo.

I had to go to the airport at 4:30, so I wound up listening to overtime on the radio

When the block happened, I started screaming and honked the horn by accident. I can’t believe we pulled that off. Absolutely amazing. Dantonio looked like he hadn’t slept in a week. Anyone else notice that?

Are there any draft projections for Cousins? Is he even going to the NFL, or is he going to continue his kinesiology track?

I expect a Stanzi-esque situation, starting off as a third stringer to learn the pro game. I don’t think we will see him on the field next season outside of an emergency but that doesn’t mean he wont eventually become an NFL player.
