Game Thread - The Michigan State Spartans vs. The Purdue Boilermakers
THE JACK BRESLIN STUDENT EVENTS CENTER -- EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN
SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2012, 12:00 PM EST
TV: ESPN
ONLINE RADIO FEED: Spartan Sports Network
So, who is ready to get back to the days when wins flowed like science from the lips of Chuck D? How about Branden Dawson grabbing offensive rebounds and getting garbage points? How about Brandon Wood nailing open threes? Brandan Kearney continuing to be a surprise off the bench? Brandon Walsh home with Kelly Taylor like he belongs! Whoa, sorry, got carried away.
There's a lot to check out today besides the adventures of people named Brandon/-en/-an. I assume today is Robbie Hummel's final trip to the Breslin as a Purdue player but I'm looking into loopholes for this. Derrick Nix continues to show his improved conditioning and we learned that Adreian Payne has a ceiling for his. Regardless, those guys will be needed today to take advantage of size in the post.
Interesting note already: According to Dan Dankich, Purdue was stuck on the tarmac for three hours and will be headed straight to the Breslin Center after arriving this morning. Will this influence and hamper their play?
The rules: No links to illegal game threads, no slurs, and be groovy to one another. Very groovy.

They rode the bus!
Ouch! That’s gotta hurt.
Three hours on the tarmack, then canceled flight. Loaded onto a bus at 4:45am for the ride to East Lansing. I’m tired just thinking about that trip.
Advantage- Spartans
Use it and bring the fire & rimstone.

Is more than acceptable here. If Purdue leads by double digits at any time in this game, I might do the same.

I miss Gus Johnson
And Special K. He should be allowed to do every Spartan game, no matter the network
I was away from the TV momentarily
Dakich, I assume?
I read someone suggesting he should join the March Madness crew because he’s clearly the best announcer on ESPN and I just shook my head.

Nice
He’s a lot more athleic & aggressive to the basket than most of us realized – I think Spartan fans hear, “Shooter from a mid-major” & just assumed not an athlete
At Kokomo he was a score first, second, and third guy
Even a bit of a team cancer. I remember a game where he showed his attitude and fouled out with 2 points and we were down 20. After he left, we came back to cut it to two.
His senior year was probably the worst year in 100 years of our program. we had him and that’s about it. Very glad to see his growth though

OMG all these long boards on bad bricks bouncing right back to Purdue
Except that one by Hummel on which he got the whistle, that was all him getting past his man
Well when you brick a long distance shot that badly
It will either bounce too high over the front line to get it & back to the shooter, or a line drive will fly off at a crazy angle. But the one Hummel got fouled on was all on our guy not bodying him
Giving up those offensive rebounds looked bad
but those Hummel jumpers took some crazy bounces off the iron.
Watching Purdue reminds me that I feel sorry for the way Hummel's injruies played out
It’s too bad that trio of Moore, Johnson, Hummel, really only got to play half a season together in their college primes before Hummel got hurt.

That's not a play AT can or should make, that's where people get frustrated with him and his lack of athleticism
Yeah his best move there would have been to
pump fake until someone goes up, then lean into him & get a whistle. But that’s a lot easier said than done
I don't mind him going up with it.
That’s where he normally draws his fouls.

Nice to join you all for another MBB Saturday
Christ this has been sloppy. Looks like neither team got more than 3 hours of sleep.
He's starting to look llike that Josh Smith guy from UCLA
from the first round NCAA game vs us last season
He's been very good in the pick and roll lately
That’s a hard play to defend with Nix’s big body setting the screen and rolling to the hoop
Dawson can make things happen with sheer athleticism
But he doesn’t look that much more comfortable in the offense than he did early in the season.
He's getting there
He had a nice last few minutes. My prediction — he’ll have a sophomore breakout season on the scale of Appling.
by Pete Rossman on Jan 21, 2012 11:47 AM CST up reply actions
I'm really, really hoping the light goes on sometimes between now & early March
If he can start to perform at the level we know he can, combined with all-stars Green & Appling, this team could be lights out
Hopefully a larger scale
I think he may be a junior bloomer. That seems to be the year at which Izzo players come out big lately.
Before the season began, he was getting Raymar comparisons
Raymar was a good freshman, and was playing like a first team All-American until he got mono his sophmore season. If he can become pre-sick Raymar, wow watch out . . .
I would be surprised if that didn't happen
A year of off-season weight-lifting and coaching will do wonders. I would expect Kearny, Gauna, and Trice to also make huge leaps.
I Bleed Green.
by eriksmithdotcom on Jan 21, 2012 11:50 AM CST up reply actions
Yeah he looks like he has no handle or jump shot
I was looking in the archives recently & there was a post up there from one of the guys that follows recruiting closely, and he came away with major concerns about handle & shot, and said he scored just by out-athleting everybody
That's good and bad news
It’s bad because it limits what he can do at this point. It’s good because I now think he stays here at least 3 years.
that is odd...maybe some dog house time for Nix from this week?

I love Izzo and am not complaining about him
But just noticing that he’s been a little off his game the last 2 games. Why not call the use it or lose it time out at the end there?
by Chitown Spartan on Jan 21, 2012 11:47 AM CST reply actions
what is this "use it or lose it" timeout?
Do you not get to keep all 5 timeouts in the second half if you haven’t used them?
Nope. Can only carry over 4.
I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left-hand side.
Bradley-Terry rankings for college football and basketball: because there aren't enough computer rankings already.
that seems really, really silly
Why not just give them 3 first half and 3 second half timeouts then or something? If you get 5 for the game, you should get 5. For the game.
Do you really want the end of the first half to take as long as the end of the second?
If anything I’d argue for knocking it down to four timeouts total.
I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left-hand side.
Bradley-Terry rankings for college football and basketball: because there aren't enough computer rankings already.
no, I don't.
But if you don’t get the 5 timeouts for the game, then change the way it’s described or something. “you get 5 timeouts for the two halves combined, but a maximum of 4 for the second half”. It just doesn’t work for me.
I'll admit I'm shocked
That this is effort they give after the Michigan loss. It looks like they expected to win. Reminiscent of last year’s team. Scary.
I Bleed Green.
by eriksmithdotcom on Jan 21, 2012 11:54 AM CST reply actions
Not to disagree completely, but I'm wary of eyeball measures like "effort"
because they’re necessarily colored by the perceptions of the viewer. Problems on execution are corrective, technical issues. Effort is a personal indictment of the players. How can you be sure which one you’re seeing?
Effort was meant to be a broader term
I meant I’m surprised by the game. I thought they’d be a much more focused effort, especially when i came to defensive lapses and crisp passing. The rebounding hasn’t been great, but a lot of those have been long rebounds.
I Bleed Green.
by eriksmithdotcom on Jan 21, 2012 12:02 PM CST up reply actions
The defensive effort has been there, though.
I mean, they HAVE only given up 24 points.
by The Birchman on Jan 21, 2012 12:05 PM CST up reply actions
I'm not terribly dissapointed...
I like some of the things I’m seeing. We’re defending well, sporadically are clicking offensively. Purdue is a good team AND they are being forced to take a ton of long shots which results in long rebounds which we aren’t getting, and nor should we be expected to.
OT: a HS football coaches opinion from yesterday
so this is an anonymous HS football coaches opinion on how things went down yesterday at that Coach’s clinic (reported by Hondo Carpenter):
http://spartannation.com/2012/01/21/a-first-hand-account-from-a-state-of-michigan-high-school-football-coach-on-the-actions-of-mark-dantonio-at-the-coaching-clinic/
yeah
definitely a pro-MSU version of how it went down, but better than just random conjecture and a couple choice quotes put out by a journalist.
I have a hard time reading anything by Hondo
Every Spartan player or coach that he writes about has the potential to be the best player or coach that MSU has ever seen. Ever.

frustrating to read a controversial article with no one named.
Yeah it was the "expose" on how the B1G looked into Gholston's actions in U-M game
What I would like to see is, the video that MSU purportedly made of 37 plays on which Lewand grabbed Gholston by the facemask. Something like that you think MSU would let leak out
Hondo knows his stuff
But I wish he’d cut back on the cheesy stuff. I don’t really want to read four paragraphs of how someone is a great kid and one paragraph of actual analysis.
Yup
Purdue had 12 offensive boards and went 8-32, so it’s more like 8-20. It’ll get better this next half.

I'd like to see more fire in the belly from Payne
Yeah, the shot of him disconnected on the bench was only a thin slice, but in general he seems to play somewhat passively.
After the game, why not check out www.zazzle.com/donnierocky*
Dawson seems to be struggling with change of pace from HS to BIG
I like his response on that play though
Mannn I wish Payne could just go up with it
when he gets the ball, he ALWAYS has to bring it down & put it on the ground to collect it. That allows the D to collapse on him, as well as reach in to knock it out
I think many players are terrified of the charging call that is so prevalent these days
by Drew Perkins on Jan 21, 2012 12:09 PM CST up reply actions
I hear ya
but in AP’s case, I just think he doesn’t have big or strong enough hands to control it and go up with it right away
He just hesitates, right?
With his athleticism, one quick turn and that’s a dunk.
He’s afraid of making a mistake it seems — very tentative.

If Purdue had made some of those early shots it changes the game completely. MSU was way out of it at the start.

Bad timeout Purdue
They have the possession arrow. Someone did the math when Iowa blew a TO like that 30 seconds into the game, and it was like this:
A timeout one a tie-up = 0.5 posessions, and at 1 ppp, that’s = 0.5 points.

Alright. Back on Track
and now officially tied for first again.
Wow well the H&R blog blowing up about how poor a sport Izzo is
I’m certain that, if this game was at Mackey & Purude up 30 with 8 minutes to go, that Painter would still play his guys. 8 MSU guys in double digit minutes, and a 9th with 9. That’s going to the bench early & often
But I guess when your team gets whupped that soundly, you have to complain about something
No apparent glaring reffing issues either way, and if it wasn’t for all those luck offensive boards, this could have been a 45 point game
that happens after losses.
BHGP was doing the same when we blew out Iowa.
BTW I paused the 'Bama-KY game
When backboard clock was visible, and guess what? It was 0.2 seconds ahead of the clock on the TV
what are you gonna do?
apparently violence isn’t an option

now back to a Lazy Afternoon
I was interested in seeing the Dawson-Painter handshake but the camera cut away.
Oh well, I’m sure the pitchforks and torches will be out for the rematch.
"Long range from the baseline, Swish!"
Yeah according to our friends at H&R,
Izzo is and always has been classless rat-bastard thug who for unknown reasons is overrated & respected, and Dawson chastised Painter for not “cutting the check.”
Ohhhh
that’s what Dawson said.
I figured it was something like that.
Thanks for confirming.
"Long range from the baseline, Swish!"
From comments in the H&R postgamer:
Also, burn Dawson. What a punk. Keep your mouth shut. I hope we hard foul him next game so he can’t walk.

That sample is one of so, so many
But guess what? MSU back in first & incontrol of it’s own destiny in the B1G.
Must defend the home court, and the @ Illinois game will be huge
HUGE
Agreed.
Appling shutting down Paul is they key. I like that matchup.
Just so glad I don’t have to see Mike Tisdale. That guy drove me nuts.

Yeah we got a rough draw not getting Illinois at the Breslin too
So I could see that being the key matchup the rest of this season.
Also, am I the only one excited to see what Nix can do against Sullinger? We play them in Colombus soon, and of course, Senior Day game is hosting tOSU this season (thanks, B1G schedulers . . . )
Err
I would LOVE to say yes (I think Sullinger is a punk with terrible sportsmanship) but I think his quickness abuses Nix. Nix may score a little, but he can’t come even close to guarding him.
Are you kidding? Of course the Big 10 puts Ohio State in Breslin for that last home game. I’ll bet we get Ed Hightower, too. This league all too often seems hell-bent on favoring Ohio St.
I Bleed Green.
by eriksmithdotcom on Jan 21, 2012 1:54 PM CST up reply actions
The way Nix is playing right now
I think he could do something, especially on offense, against Sullinger.
Nix is taller, longer, & stronger than Sullinger, in fact, I think Green is only a smidge shorter than him. Sullinger is super athletic on O, but IDK if he can handle someone as big as Nix is and is playing right now
Double edge sword
Nix/Payne can’t guard him, Green could but would get in foul trouble. They don’t need to use him on Green.
I hope you are right- getting 1 against Ohio St would be huge for tournament seeding.

He's playing like
Big Josh Smith from UCLA did against us in the first round last season. Just getting down low, holding his hands high, and using his big body & strength to keep defenders off him as he lays it in off the 6" vertical
Izzone Comment out of line
But this internet post isn’t much further behind.
No need to take anyone out of the game, or foul hard because of revenge. Just stupid.
The further you get away from it and enjoy it as a fan the more you realize that burning anger is really stupid. Even for Michigan players. I never want anybody to get hurt.
Yup when their guy went down hard on the tie-up with Wood
nothing but “I hope he’s OK”s for him on here
WOW terrible foul by Kentucky
Up four with 25 seconds and fouling a great FT shooter on the inbounds in the backcourt. Let’s them get 2 right back without losing any time
From looking at the Twitter feed
A lot is going to be made about the Dawson-Painter exchange.
Hate that it would in anyway sully a strong performance by both the team & Dawson.
Hope he apologizes.

Student sections say some nasty stuff
They really reflect poorly on the school. And not just the Izzone, it’s every student section in the country, though that by no means excuses saying crap like that. It’s just the immaturity of 18-22 y/o kids.
And in this case
it was an individual person in the student section who yelled the ACL thing.
The whole game the Izzone were chanting “robbie, robbie” when hummel was taking out the ball, and later they were calling on Painter to put Hummel back in at the end of the game.
They’re both just butt hurt from the beating. But I really do feel for Hummel, he’s had a rough 2 years.

“We want Dod-son” or something like that. At least that’s what could be heard on TV
Yeah, I heard that too.
I was up in the nose bleeds, but I thought I also heard them calling for hummel to come back in with 6 min left or so, and then they booed when painter put in someone else. Who knows… maybe I was imagining that, it was sweet either way.

Per Hammer & Rails
He said, “Nice team Coach.”
WOW, I can see how that was so offensive. But again, when your team gets used to mop the floor like that, you have to find anything to flame with & latch onto it
Still
I want to give them the benefit of the doubt as 19-21 year olds, but we really need to keep that in check. Too far is too far.
We shouldn’t even have to talk about this now.

Amen
This should be a non-issue, but as we all know, he who screams loudest is who controls thedialogue (here, it’s whiny Boiler fans).
But yeah, M looks terrible right now. Is Arkansas any good? I don’t know if they’ve done anything since the days of Big Nasty leading them to a Natty in the 90’s.
Just Play
No need for players to talk to opposing coaches ever until they hit the handshake line. Now, no matter what, that’s the storyline of Dawson’s game. It is detracting from his good defense and highlight reel dunks.
His best game as a Spartan
Looked active on D, had that nice jumper from just inside the 3 pt line, and at least three sick highlight reel dunks, not to mention the tough liner he forced up after splitting between two guys.
I wouldn’t consider this his breakout game, but he clearly looked better today than at any time this season
Did you see how 21 on Arkansas
Got that ball high, in transition, with one hand, and laid it in for the and one?
I soooo wish Payne could do that. He easily gives up 2-3 shots/game by putting the ball on the ground to gather it and allowing the D to collapse on him.
well he shouldn't be saying anything to a coach
whether it was nice or nasty, he’ll probably need extra security in Mackey

Jesus. The sour grapes at H & R is unreal.
I get it. They’re upset because they just got literally destroyed and embarrassed.
But to wish that Dawson tears his ACL/ gets injured on a deliberate hard foul at Mackey/ “burns” (whatever the hell that means), is both juvenile and classless.
You can’t sit there and say the Izzone is the epitome of classlessness while saying the exact same things about one of our players with no remorse. What a bunch of children.
Grow the fuck up.
The thing about it is
Student sections say dumb stuff. All the time… Kids in college do dumb stuff… all the time. It’s part of life.
One dude over there was saying that he “expected a letter of apology” from MSU for the one kid that made an ACL tear comment.
Seriously? That’s like demanding the administration for a letter of apology from the University President after going to a frat party where ONE DUDE was a douchebag to you.
They really need to grow up about some of this stuff.
"I believe in a good kick in the ass. This— I believe. " -- Walker Percy

Like I said earlier in this thread
There are a few people over at H&R who give the rest of us a bad name… which is ironically what MSU fans were saying when they posted over at H&R. I think if someone did say that to Hummel it is pretty classless that individual would say that. But I respect Izzo and MSU fans too much to think that is the way they all act.
Yeah, i understand
Especially after a loss. Things get heated. And obviously it was classless for that one kid to say it to Hummel. But I don’t think it’s worth getting bent out of shape over what one faceless member of the Izzone said in the waning minutes of a blowout.
Either way, you guys have a pretty dedicated community over there and I mostly like reading what you have to say. Just today was a bit of insanity.

We all have our bad days.
Just look at our team for example. The true character of a person or group is shown in how they respond to those bad days. Time to move on and play better next game (or comment better, etc).
"Hummel for three..... BULLSEYE!!!"
Oh boy
Popped over to Hammer & Rails to say GG and apologize for our immature student section (re: Hummel) and they were spitting fire.
Probably shouldn’t have engaged their fans right now but didn’t think it was cool for anyone to hope a player is injured.
To all Spartans, I’d say wait before you post anything over there. Yikes.
Makes me feel better I didn't do that
I feel bad about the lack of class Dawson and the Izzone showed, but they seem unrealistic about how good their team is. They are lucky to be 14-6 right now. It’s hard to imagine them making the tournament, which should not be surprise to anyone but their fan base.
I like Matt Painter, he seems cool & down-to-earth, but the talent isn’t there this year.
It’s a shame Hummel got hurt, they had a real nice mix last year.

But stupid begets stupid I suppose.

which seemed to be positive. I know there was only positivity for him my last couple years when I was in the Izzone.

We have a few people who take every little comment and blow it out of proportion. You guys played great and it is a shame the current Purdue team isn’t talented enough nor rested enough to give you guys a good game today.
I hope if someone did in fact say something to Robbie that he is found though. I can’t imagine why someone would say something to such a nice guy.
I hear you man.
I started reading through the thread a little bit and it turned out to be only two or three guys that were really fired up.
The rest were level-headed. Apologies from both sides are probably in order. I’ll be holding no grudges, that’s for sure. That wouldn’t be fair to a lot of the good Purdue fans out there.

Tough sell to get me to root for Michigan.
I usually don’t give UM a second thought, but I was harassed endlessly (on Facebook) the other night after we lost by their dbag fans who hadn’t watch a minute of basketball the whole year before the last 5 minutes of Tuesday’s game.

Yeah some 2-3
Also, extending the D with a lot of full court pressure. But fucking Novack with another triple now.
Arkansas transition impressive
They’re really running the court from what I see. I guess that’s the key to beating a defense like UM.
Yeah it really helps against a zone
if you can beat it down the floor in transition before they can set up. And like most SEC schols, Arkansas looks like it has quick, long guys that can get down the floor.

It will be interesting to see how Bielein handles real talent. His recruiting class next year is the best he’s ever had. he does well with players that fit his system. Let's encourage Burke
One and done, get out of Ann Arbor plz.
A line up of McGary, Hardaway, Robinson, Burke, Morgan? would be pretty interesting for Beilein. They could do some real damage with those players.
There is a chance McGary never makes it to AA
He is one of a small handful of players who, under the new NBA cba, could actually go straight to the pros:
He’s 19 y/o (will actually turn 20 right before the draft), and was SUPPOSED to graduate HS in 2010, but was held back twice, including once in HS. The rule is, the player must be age 19 by draft date, and either one year removed from HS, or when he would have graduated if not held back.
Based on eveything I’ve heard about him (bad teammate in HS & AAU in Indiana, transferred twice before transferring to current prep school, local TV tried to do a reality show about him & parents, he has his own blog on ESPN.com), this kid sounds like not a great teammate, and I could see him going straight to NBA this season.
A chance, but a snowballs
I thought he considered an immediate jump and then picked UM after he settled on college. I guess i’d be really surprised if he didn’t suit up next year.
Well as we all know
It’s impossible to know what’s going on in the decision making process of 17-20 y/o kids, especially stud athletes
