ONLINE RADIO FEED: Spartan Sports Network

Statsheet game link.

So, who is ready to get back to the days when wins flowed like science from the lips of Chuck D? How about Branden Dawson grabbing offensive rebounds and getting garbage points? How about Brandon Wood nailing open threes? Brandan Kearney continuing to be a surprise off the bench? Brandon Walsh home with Kelly Taylor like he belongs! Whoa, sorry, got carried away.

There's a lot to check out today besides the adventures of people named Brandon/-en/-an. I assume today is Robbie Hummel's final trip to the Breslin as a Purdue player but I'm looking into loopholes for this. Derrick Nix continues to show his improved conditioning and we learned that Adreian Payne has a ceiling for his. Regardless, those guys will be needed today to take advantage of size in the post.

Interesting note already: According to Dan Dankich, Purdue was stuck on the tarmac for three hours and will be headed straight to the Breslin Center after arriving this morning. Will this influence and hamper their play?

The rules: No links to illegal game threads, no slurs, and be groovy to one another. Very groovy.

Ouch! That’s gotta hurt.

Three hours on the tarmack, then canceled flight. Loaded onto a bus at 4:45am for the ride to East Lansing. I’m tired just thinking about that trip.

Even a bit of a team cancer. I remember a game where he showed his attitude and fouled out with 2 points and we were down 20. After he left, we came back to cut it to two.

His senior year was probably the worst year in 100 years of our program. we had him and that’s about it. Very glad to see his growth though

It will either bounce too high over the front line to get it & back to the shooter, or a line drive will fly off at a crazy angle. But the one Hummel got fouled on was all on our guy not bodying him

by SpartanDan on Jan 21, 2012 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

no, I don't.

But if you don’t get the 5 timeouts for the game, then change the way it’s described or something. “you get 5 timeouts for the two halves combined, but a maximum of 4 for the second half”. It just doesn’t work for me.

by hascow on Jan 21, 2012 12:01 PM CST up reply actions

I'll admit I'm shocked

That this is effort they give after the Michigan loss. It looks like they expected to win. Reminiscent of last year’s team. Scary.

I Bleed Green.

by eriksmithdotcom on Jan 21, 2012 11:54 AM CST reply actions

Not to disagree completely, but I'm wary of eyeball measures like "effort"

because they’re necessarily colored by the perceptions of the viewer. Problems on execution are corrective, technical issues. Effort is a personal indictment of the players. How can you be sure which one you’re seeing?

by lesmanalim on Jan 21, 2012 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

Effort was meant to be a broader term

I meant I’m surprised by the game. I thought they’d be a much more focused effort, especially when i came to defensive lapses and crisp passing. The rebounding hasn’t been great, but a lot of those have been long rebounds.

I Bleed Green.

by eriksmithdotcom on Jan 21, 2012 12:02 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not terribly dissapointed...

I like some of the things I’m seeing. We’re defending well, sporadically are clicking offensively. Purdue is a good team AND they are being forced to take a ton of long shots which results in long rebounds which we aren’t getting, and nor should we be expected to.

One of the opinions was that the best pro coaches just coach at halftime, trusting that the group of guys he has are grown, serious men who don’t need speechifying. I wonder how much of that holds for college ball.

Wow well the H&R blog blowing up about how poor a sport Izzo is

I’m certain that, if this game was at Mackey & Purude up 30 with 8 minutes to go, that Painter would still play his guys. 8 MSU guys in double digit minutes, and a 9th with 9. That’s going to the bench early & often

But I guess when your team gets whupped that soundly, you have to complain about something

So I could see that being the key matchup the rest of this season.

Also, am I the only one excited to see what Nix can do against Sullinger? We play them in Colombus soon, and of course, Senior Day game is hosting tOSU this season (thanks, B1G schedulers . . . )

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

Err

I would LOVE to say yes (I think Sullinger is a punk with terrible sportsmanship) but I think his quickness abuses Nix. Nix may score a little, but he can’t come even close to guarding him.

Are you kidding? Of course the Big 10 puts Ohio State in Breslin for that last home game. I’ll bet we get Ed Hightower, too. This league all too often seems hell-bent on favoring Ohio St.

I Bleed Green.

by eriksmithdotcom on Jan 21, 2012 1:54 PM CST up reply actions

The way Nix is playing right now

I think he could do something, especially on offense, against Sullinger.

Nix is taller, longer, & stronger than Sullinger, in fact, I think Green is only a smidge shorter than him. Sullinger is super athletic on O, but IDK if he can handle someone as big as Nix is and is playing right now

Nix/Payne can’t guard him, Green could but would get in foul trouble. They don’t need to use him on Green.

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

And in this case

it was an individual person in the student section who yelled the ACL thing.

The whole game the Izzone were chanting “robbie, robbie” when hummel was taking out the ball, and later they were calling on Painter to put Hummel back in at the end of the game.

They’re both just butt hurt from the beating. But I really do feel for Hummel, he’s had a rough 2 years.

Just Play

No need for players to talk to opposing coaches ever until they hit the handshake line. Now, no matter what, that’s the storyline of Dawson’s game. It is detracting from his good defense and highlight reel dunks.

by msuduster on Jan 21, 2012 1:34 PM CST up reply actions

His best game as a Spartan

Looked active on D, had that nice jumper from just inside the 3 pt line, and at least three sick highlight reel dunks, not to mention the tough liner he forced up after splitting between two guys.

I wouldn’t consider this his breakout game, but he clearly looked better today than at any time this season

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 1:36 PM CST up reply actions

Did you see how 21 on Arkansas

Got that ball high, in transition, with one hand, and laid it in for the and one?

I soooo wish Payne could do that. He easily gives up 2-3 shots/game by putting the ball on the ground to gather it and allowing the D to collapse on him.

I get it. They’re upset because they just got literally destroyed and embarrassed.

But to wish that Dawson tears his ACL/ gets injured on a deliberate hard foul at Mackey/ “burns” (whatever the hell that means), is both juvenile and classless.

You can’t sit there and say the Izzone is the epitome of classlessness while saying the exact same things about one of our players with no remorse. What a bunch of children.

There are a few people over at H&R who give the rest of us a bad name… which is ironically what MSU fans were saying when they posted over at H&R. I think if someone did say that to Hummel it is pretty classless that individual would say that. But I respect Izzo and MSU fans too much to think that is the way they all act.

I think that play was.

And it was bad…

not buying that. Sorry.

by eriksmithdotcom on Jan 21, 2012 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

I'd like to see him try that at State

He’d need security to get out of the building.

I like Beilein, but no class here leaving him in.

I Bleed Green.

Arkansas Defense

I haven’t seen much of this game, but how are they solving Michigan’s offense? Zone?

by msuduster on Jan 21, 2012 2:26 PM CST reply actions

Yeah some 2-3

Also, extending the D with a lot of full court pressure. But fucking Novack with another triple now.

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 2:28 PM CST up reply actions

Arkansas transition impressive

They’re really running the court from what I see. I guess that’s the key to beating a defense like UM.

by msuduster on Jan 21, 2012 2:32 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah it really helps against a zone

if you can beat it down the floor in transition before they can set up. And like most SEC schols, Arkansas looks like it has quick, long guys that can get down the floor.

This makes me feel better

Joe Rexrode @joerexrode
Izzo on Dawson talking: “If he was, I’m gonna handle it.” Looked surprised at question. “If he did, my apologies to Matt.”

I Bleed Green.

by eriksmithdotcom on Jan 21, 2012 2:29 PM CST reply actions

Yeah RR on fire with the Painter thing

and also the supposed Izzone comment about Hummel’s ACL.

FWIW, Dawson said he didn’t say anything, but on TV it looked like he did.

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 2:30 PM CST up reply actions

Bench

Is where Dawson starts the next game, my guess. And I’d probably be ok with it, he’d be back in after a few minutes with the message received.

by msuduster on Jan 21, 2012 2:36 PM CST up reply actions

Yup

Also, apparenlty Gauna subbed in early for Nix bc Nix was late to a team meeting

This is high praise too

Hardaway

does nothing for me as a player.

He seems to lose his composure often, too.

I Bleed Green.

by eriksmithdotcom on Jan 21, 2012 2:34 PM CST reply actions

Keep in mind he was a low three star recruit

His game based on athleticism, and his last name.

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

He has the tools

From a physical and skill perspective but all he needs is his focus to get in line and he’s a pro.

by msuduster on Jan 21, 2012 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

i agree about the physical talent

but not the basketball skills. For being the son of the guy who had such a killer crossover it had a nickname (the “UTEP two-step”), Hardaway has no handle.

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 2:36 PM CST up reply actions

Exhibit A, just now

Barrelling into the lane, drawing coverage, but instead of dishing it or pulling up, just plowing into people for an obvious charge

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 2:38 PM CST up reply actions

My Michigan friends

think he might make the lousy decision to go pro after this year. Can you say undrafted!

It will be interesting to see how Bielein handles real talent. His recruiting class next year is the best he’s ever had. he does well with players that fit his system. We’ll see how 5 star recruits mesh with that. I’d guess he’ll be fine, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see them struggle to get enough shot for everyone.

I Bleed Green.

Let's encourage Burke

One and done, get out of Ann Arbor plz.

A line up of McGary, Hardaway, Robinson, Burke, Morgan? would be pretty interesting for Beilein. They could do some real damage with those players.

by msuduster on Jan 21, 2012 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

There is a chance McGary never makes it to AA

He is one of a small handful of players who, under the new NBA cba, could actually go straight to the pros:

He’s 19 y/o (will actually turn 20 right before the draft), and was SUPPOSED to graduate HS in 2010, but was held back twice, including once in HS. The rule is, the player must be age 19 by draft date, and either one year removed from HS, or when he would have graduated if not held back.

Based on eveything I’ve heard about him (bad teammate in HS & AAU in Indiana, transferred twice before transferring to current prep school, local TV tried to do a reality show about him & parents, he has his own blog on ESPN.com), this kid sounds like not a great teammate, and I could see him going straight to NBA this season.

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

A chance, but a snowballs

I thought he considered an immediate jump and then picked UM after he settled on college. I guess i’d be really surprised if he didn’t suit up next year.

by msuduster on Jan 21, 2012 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

Well as we all know

It’s impossible to know what’s going on in the decision making process of 17-20 y/o kids, especially stud athletes

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 2:48 PM CST up reply actions

Yikes

A guy held back twice getting into an academic school like Michigan.

That really bothers me.

I Bleed Green.

by eriksmithdotcom on Jan 21, 2012 2:57 PM CST up reply actions

And who only made grades once he ended up at an East coast

basketball factory prep school. Nothing to see here, folks . . .

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

Wow so McGary has his own Wikipedia page

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_McGary

Which lets us know that, among other things, his current prep school has eight (8!) D-1 commits, but doesn’t mention the grades issues (because Mitch or his dad probably created the page).

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 3:05 PM CST up reply actions

Burke

Has Arkansas been forcing him into jumpshots? (3-14 from the field)

He got into the lane at will against us. Against athletic / quick PG’s we’ve had some real issues.

by msuduster on Jan 21, 2012 2:40 PM CST reply actions

And to think...

Beilein picked him up off of the recruiting scrap heap

by The Birchman on Jan 21, 2012 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

I hate him

He’s a more active Austin Thornton.

by msuduster on Jan 21, 2012 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

Good foul Arkansas

M not in bonus yet so it makes sense.

Do they go for the win on the final shot, or a quick two so they can foul if they miss?

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 2:59 PM CST reply actions

OMG wow that ball was nearly in

The announcer even called it in until it rolled out. So M goes 1-1 on a week when both games came down to the best player on the losing team missing a great look at the buzzer that would have won it

Back from the game

This makes up for the game I went to last year where they beat us by 30+ points. Dawson was amazing, he had the crowd going nuts today.

Spartan fans (specifically MSUDersh)

I’d like to apologize for our (and my) comments over at H&R. There was no need for it, and it was just as bad if not worse than the comments that got Painter fired up. I still have a great amount of respect for MSU basketball, and I think most Purdue fans do. Please don’t let that firey exchange sway your opinions about the rest of our fanbase. I definitely won’t let that happen about the Izzone. Good luck the rest of the year, and we’ll see you guys again in a month!

Not quite sure what happened.

I know I read too much into a comment and got a little ticked at MSUDersh, but we’ve since kissed and made up. And I really hope we’re not doing battle. I think a lot of Purdue fans have respected you guys for awhile. I hope that doesn’t change.

by boilerjake on Jan 21, 2012 4:59 PM CST up reply actions

Not MSUDersh

But no worries. I think it’s expected that 1-10 out of 100 fans are um, very passionate, about their team.

Beat UM for us plz.

We'll do our best.

HAHA understood

and thanks, believe me, I know what it’s like to be testy after a bad loss. I think you guys have a solid squad, I like the guard Jackson a lot, it’s just really tough to win on the raod in the Big Ten.

Not to mention, the situation regarding getting to EL did your team absolutely no favors, I think they had no legs & thats why the shots were so off.

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 5:35 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

I didn’t expect us to come within 10 honestly. We had a 2 game win streak going up there, you guys were coming off a 2-game losing streak, and we’re not nearly as good of a team this year as we’ve been in the past were the three reasons I thought MSU would win solidly. The travel debacle really just cemented that prediction.

FSU up 72-70 on Duke with 26 seconds left

can they beat both UNC and Duke? Would that help us more than hurt us?

Thanks FSU

it’s the win that keeps on giving

Chris Allen currently with 14 points on 11 shots

for ISU vs. TT on ESPN2 right now. BTW he’s #4 on that team (as opposed to #3 at MSU)

by MSUDersh on Jan 21, 2012 5:36 PM CST reply actions

Hopefully we won't play them in the NCAA tourney

I could see Allen going off on us.

After the game, why not check out www.zazzle.com/donnierocky*

by donaldo on Jan 21, 2012 5:46 PM CST up reply actions

He's not really a postseason performner

in 3 seasons and fourteen (14!) NCAA tourney games at MSU, he averaged 5.7 ppg on 32.5% shooting, 33.3% from 3, with 1.6 rpg & 1.3 apg.

His best game was the (now vacated) ’08 Sweet Sixteen game vs. Memphis, he went off for 20 but fouled out late. Thanks for cheating, Derrick Rose. MSU could very well have had ANOTHER Final Four that season.
