Roy Schmidt over at Illinois Prep Bulls-eye is a reputable source and he had this tweet yesterday: "Learned two things yesterday regarding Jabari Parker's recruitment: 1) expect an October decision 2) he may not take all 5 official visits."
If Roy is correct on this, that's major news. The earlier talk from Jabari's family has been that they would maximize the recruiting experience with five officials plus in-homes. Hard to say what this means for Duke, MSU, and the rest but I still like Tom Izzo's chances.

Heres hoping

I truly think Izzo can win this battle. With him we will win a National Championship. I do wonder who we bring in aside from him since James Young seems to be cooling off.

I hope we land him

I have been reading that he is “high on MSU” and “we have a good chance to land him,” and although I hope this is true, I haven’t seen/read/heard anything other than people’s opinions on this matter. Does anyone know of any specific quotes or thoughts Jabari may have put out there showing he does have interest in attending MSU? On scout it has him showing high interest in Washington (which is where I believe his father went, or works there), and medium on everyone else, including MSU, Duke, Kentucky, O$U, etc. I’m just curious to see if anyone has any insight other than hopes and dreams. No disrespect intended to anyone. Intrpdtrvlr, thanks for all the recruiting news, you surely seem to be “in the know” and always write dynamite stories. I am definitely a fan of your work.

Has he visited MSU in any capacity yet?

I’m pretty sure I heard Comparoni say that he had been to a couple of football games at MSU. This was news to me since I know that would’ve created a stir but I never heard anything about it.
As with any Chicago prospect, you can’t discount Illinois. I hear that he went to their game at NW and chatted with coaches afterward. I assume that was legal.
I also know Slick, er, Calipari was in Chicago recently and created a buzz. You just know this thing won’t end without Kentucky making a run at the #1 recruit. I think Slick has landed 3 or 4 of the last 5.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to the summer AAU/NBA camp circuit and daily gossip on who’s stalking Jabari. I get the feeling the Izzo kids will be able to give detailed scouting reports of Jabari’s game after this summer.

You're right; Interesting thing about Parker

Roy Schmidt has noted this in writing about him – though schools like Duke and MSU are heavily in the mix, the Parker camp appears sincere about hearing from the locals. We’re not just talking about Illinois but even DePaul and Northwestern. Though I would bet against them, I sure wouldn’t bet my house.

I don’t know Parker’s full MSU contact history but I’d say this, Spartyball – Parker has been around MSU enough that I don’t think there’s anything there to tip the hand. I’m still cautiously optimistic (maybe more so than most) that Parker ends up at MSU.

Recruiting madness

I won’t pretend to know what to expect from the crazy world of recruiting, so when intrpdtrvlr says “cautiously optimistic that Parker ends up at MSU,” I’m much more optimistic than I was before. Given the number of top schools on Parker’s offer list as well as the high praise he’s received, what makes you “cautiously optimistic”? Recent MSU recruiting wins? Just a feeling? Has Parker been quoted praising MSU? Thanks for all the updates!

B1G & Chicago

I think it’s interesting about the Chicago dynamic – specifically, which B1G team really rules this market?

NW markets itself as “Chicago’s Big Ten University,” but c’mon, we all know that isn’t the case. It may be the closest school, but nobody in Chicago really cares about NW athletics. Their best local guys have been players from the north and/or western suburbs (Shurna, Crawford, Sobolewski, for example), which is a different kind of ball than is played in the city.

Wisconsin is the next closest school physcially, and has probably the biggest alum base here besides Illinois, but from what I understand, they haven’t had much success recruiting here. Looking at their past several years of commits on Rivals, none of any note are from the city or surrounding suburbs. In fact, most of their best players are from the upper midwest, most notably states of Wisconsin & Minnesota.

Illinois is of course the home state school, and has had some success with Chicago kids – but they haven’t had national level success since Dee Brown, et al, a number of years ago, and seem to not have a lot of momentum. Though I do notice on Rivals that they signed four city kids in this year’s class.

I know Notre Dame isn’t in the B1G, but it seems to be the school most people here care about. But like NW, being a private school with the highest academic standards in the conference doesn’t always bode well.

OSU has had some success, especially with Evan Turner, but they recruit nationally (as opposed to regionally like Izzo emphasizes).

Purdue has had some success here, they have a highly rated 2 guard coming out of Whitney Young next season, also, Hummel is from Valpo area & E’Twaun Moore from E. Chicago, IN, which are both closer to Chicago than any major city in Indiana.

U-M seems to have NW Indiana & specifically, Chesterton (btw, Chesterton’s exit off 94, #26a, is a good stop before getting on the tri-state tollway if you are driving to Chicago, they have a Dunkin Donuts, the last reasonably priced gas before the tollway, and a bunch of fast food if you’re into that). Novak & McGary are the two bigges names to come out of Chesterton in a long time, and Beilein nabbed them both. But again, Chesterton is suburban hoops (as opposed to Gary, IN), and not closely aligned with Chicago.

Finally, MSU. Shannon Brown, one of Izzo’s best “gets” in the past 10 years, was a Chicago stud & legend. I know Purdue thinks it owns Gary, IN, but Dawson is from there, and Gary is more aligned with Chicago than any place in Indiana. Obviously these are only a couple of names from there, but Izzo has stated often that he is making Chicago a priority, and when he does get an area commit, it’s the best player in the region.

I guess what I’m getting at is, for as much hoops talent as there is in this city, and also given that B1G headquarters are here, there are numerous speaking events in the city every year with B1G coaches & ADs, and the conference tourney was held here for years, how come Chicago hoops hasn’t been “claimed” by at least one conference school? The local schools all really suck at hoops – DePaul is the worst team in the Big East, Chicago State just snapped it’s 26 game losing streak by beating a D-III catholic school, and Loyola hasn’t been relevant in twenty five years.

Chicago is more of a national recruiting source

I would argue Illinois has the closest thing to a pipeline. Over half of their roster is either from Chicago or played on one of the AAU teams. That’s not even counting Richmond and Head who both left in the last year. They have at least 2 more kids coming from Chicago in 12 and 13 and are of course recruiting Jabari Parker and at least one of his current HS teammates.
OSU does well there too. They did get Turner and on the current roster both Sam Thompson and Lenzelle Smith are from Chicagoland, at least I think Smith is.
The really high end talents manage to get away from the B1G though because the likes of Kansas, Kentucky and Duke will go after the best kids harder than any of the conference schools.

Personally, I’m skeptical of MSU landing any Chicago kids because as you wrote, Shannon Brown is the only success story. The HS and AAU coaches in Chicago play a large role in determining where kids go. They’re like a bball mafia or something. I’m just not sure Coach Izzo is a “made guy” with them. He’s obviously going hard after Parker and Cliff Alexander so over the next year, we’re about to find out.

I think though

that any coach like Izzo, Coach K, Self, Roy Williams, etc who has such a respected national brand in terms of media exposure and on court success has a chance no matter what the AAU mafia you speak of says.

Chicago being national base

makes a ton of sense, they have had a lot of talent leave the midwest.

by MSUDersh on Jan 24, 2012 8:03 AM CST up reply actions

From reading about Parker...

…it seems that his family is trying to avoid the influence of the AAU mafia as much as possible, and rely on family/close friends for guidance. I hope that’s true (both for Parker’s sake, and for MSU’s prospects with him)

Izzo on Chicago

What I like about Izzo, is he gets the guys he focuses on. if Izzo focuses on 5 kids for 2013/2014, I have the utmost confidence that he will get at least 4 of them whether they are from Chocogo or anywhere else, just not going to bet on which 4 those are.

9 Months Away

I love the world of Social Media and recruiting it makes news when a kid announces he’ll have an announcement in 9 months. I’m guilty of following it because it’s so easy to follow but it still kinds of cracks me up.

From what I’ve seen of Parker he is a flat out stud. Basically everything Delvon Roe was supposed to be only he has better range shooting and can handle. if he comes in 2013 we are winning a National Championship that year if everyone stays, which I think they will.

Ever since Izzo turned down the Cavs he has made recruiting players like this a priority which he didn’t for a while after he felt burned by Randolph going one and done. With Izzo’s recent success with Dawson and Harris i think we have a good shot. It’ll be fun to imagine him in the Green and White and us rolling out 4 McDonalds All Americans in our 2013 starting lineup. Appling, Harris, Dawson, Parker, and Payne that would by far be the most athletic team we’ve ever had.

Either way MSU has a bright future for a long time on the hard wood GO GREEN

by MSUMC25 on Jan 23, 2012 3:38 PM CST reply actions

That would be a sick lineup

Too bad I don’t think all of those guys will stay depending on the success this year and next.

by StickyGreen on Jan 23, 2012 4:19 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I think they definitely do

Dawson, despite his big game at purdue, still has plenty of things to work on. I see him leaving after junior year, but not sophmore. Harris won’t be a one and done either. Remember how we all though Payne was a possible one and done, maybe two year player? Now it would be foolish for him to not stay all four years. I think Izzo makes it clear to his players that they have to earn their PT, and that really restricts your ability to leave early.

by Loneytunes on Jan 23, 2012 6:36 PM CST up reply actions

Unless

an NBA scout really likes what he sees in the limited court time
I think of Marvin Williams who had scouts drooling even though he didn’t start.
Dawson is physically ready for the NBA, his game is not.
Any player with NBA potential should never play a senior season in college, that’s just my opinion.
I do believe that any player currently at MSU that fits that profile plays at least 3.
Parker’s over/under would be 2 seasons, if we’re lucky enough to get him.

"Long range from the baseline, Swish!"

by spartyball on Jan 23, 2012 7:03 PM CST up reply actions

I COULD see

Parker being a one and done, but yeah Dawson and Harris are three year players methinks.

by Loneytunes on Jan 23, 2012 7:24 PM CST up reply actions

Good points

I wonder if that’s part of the reason Izzo utilizes guys like Dawson the way he does. Keep them warm, but not smoldering so that their eyes (and focus) don’t wander to the NBA.

by StickyGreen on Jan 23, 2012 8:01 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Parker is a One and Done

I expect Parker to be a one and done but it fits in perfectly with our Roster in 2013. Appling / Payne Seniors, Harris will be a Sophmore, Dawson a Junior. If they win the title i expect Harris, Dawson, and Parker to be gone and that’s fine.

Parker is the final piece to the puzzle for a Nat’l title run in 2013.

by MSUMC25 on Jan 24, 2012 4:00 PM CST up reply actions

Nat'l Championship Hopes Baybay

I got ‘em too for that season. On top of that insanely athletic starting lineup (which I’d probably substitute Parker out of depending on how other players develop) we’ll have an insane bench of Kearney, Costello, Trice, Byrd, Kaminski, Gauna and Valentine. That front line is going to be monstrous if it comes together without any big hitches. Think about throwing a senior, more polished Payne, Costello who will be an offensive force in the Big Ten, Gauna who seems like he could end up a Goran Suton type, the number one recruit in the nation in Parker, and Kaminski raining it in from three AND Byrd will see some time at forward I’m sure too.

The cool thing that I’ve noticed is that Izzo seems to be assembling the biggest team size wise he’s ever had. Aside from Trice and Appling the shortest guy we’d have is Gary Harris at 6’4, and from there we go 6’5, 6’5, 6’6, 6’7, 6’8, 6’9, 6’9, 6’10. That’s CRAZY.

by Loneytunes on Jan 23, 2012 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

And we'd have a Sr and Jr PG...

My God undefeated 1987 IU style hahahaha

by MSUMC25 on Jan 23, 2012 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

Totally didn't think about that

That’s huge actually. Izzo is building his teams on a master level if people stay, because Valentine isn’t going to see much action until 2014 I think and if you add Tyus Jones/Jahlil Okafor, we may see a huge run of sustained success, which is the point Izzo wants to leave the program at.
