Rose Bowl Wonderings
Watching the end of the Rose Bowl, I initially thought what a stupid decision to try to spike it. Then as I saw the replay, I began thinking, "Why did he wait 1 or more seconds after the clock started to snap the ball?"
What I'm wondering: Is it possible the ref rolls his arm to start the clock a second or so before he blows the whistle on the field?? Wilson and Konz are going on the sound but the official timer is working by sight.
Just a thought. Would love to hear people's thoughts

He shouldn't be
I ref high school ball, and the whistle and your arm should be going at the same time.
Very difficult to say
I’m sure it was really loud down on the field at the time. But why even put yourself in that situation? Obviously, the snap & spike could both have been done more quickly (it looked to me like RW took a step back & turned his body 90 degrees, which both wasted time), but I still think they should have had that play already called in the previous huddle, and should have had their WRs going to the end zone. The ball was only on the 25 yard line.
Isn't there a rule
That the offense must be set for one second before it can snap the ball? And didn’t this rule come into play in our first game with Wisconsin this year?
Maybe this accounts for it, though I don’t think it’s a second in game time. So if they were set before the ref signaled to run the clock they could have snapped immediately.
Is anyone else really hoping Bo Ryan calls an inexplicable timeout at some point tonight so we can all make the “Brett Bielema just called in that timeout” jokes?
Iowa game
And they got a false start penalty for that. But it was a different scenario – last night, UW was set while waiting for the ball to be placed, while Iowa ran to the line & snapped it as soon as everybody lined into position, in order to draw a quick flag against our guys.
