Game Thread -- Michigan State Spartans at Illinois Fighting Illini
Michigan St. Spartans at Illinois Fighting Illini, Jan 31, 2012 6:00 PM CST
ASSEMBLY HALL -- CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS
TUESDAY, JANUARY 31, 2012, 7:00 PM EST
TV: ESPN
ONLINE RADIO FEED: Spartan Sports Network
Y'know, I could really do without these long spaces between games. I'm sure the breaks help MSU improve, but what am I supposed to do to entertain myself? Read? Volunteer? Pssh. This game is against an Illinois team that has been near unbeatable at home, losing only to Wisconsin, and near doormat-status in true road games; their only win is at Northwestern by 1.
It always seems like some Illini player blows up against MSU, but luckily Brandon Paul got his out of the way early. If I had to guess one plaer to go off against the Spartans, I'd pick Joesph Bertrand. I think Nix and Payne both have the size and athleticism to contain Meyers Leonard on the inside, where Illinois is at its most efficient (51.6 2PT%). If the Spartans can make the Illini shoot threes, that may be promising as Illinois has only made 31.9% of its long range shots this season.
One more thing -- The Spartan Radio Network is reporting that bot Draymond Green and Brandon Wood have the flu, meaning increased playing time for Brandan Kearney, Russell Byrd, and possibly Travis Trice if he can go. If you needed a cause for trepidation, there it is.
This is the game thread. You know what to do -- no links to illegal game threads, no slurs, and be cool to one another. Enjoy the game everyone.
GO GREEN, GO WHITE, BEAT ILLINOIS.

Let's see
Playing a road game in the state of Illinois while wearing home whites with the next game being Michigan. I’ve seen this movie before. Hated it!
Plus we’re down a point guard just like 2 years ago and now there’s a flu factor too.
Great…
Illinois’ season is on the brink. Either they give up completely and get their coach fired or they put together another made for ESPN perfect game to save their season.
I wonder which it’ll be.
I hope it’s not the latter.
I need a drink.
"Long range from the baseline, Swish!"
UGH
I HATE DAN DAKICH. RUINS EVERY GAME.
Looks like another game on mute.

that's not a good start

I think players are looking for more charge calls
Because refs are letting bigs get away with less contact on drives than before.
This call on Payne just shows that. Guy runs into him and there’s a foul call.

I think if you leave any player that open

Supposedly he hits them all the time in practice...
but he’s basically been told to hold off because Green is the big man who is supposed to take 3s this year. Expect pain to replace green as the 3 point big man next year.
Stupid foul Wood
And even though he made it, Payne should never, ever again take that shot.
We need to get it inside & draw fouls on Leonard. Cannot keep letting him change shots & force jumpers from centers.
by MSUDersh on Jan 31, 2012 6:13 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Disagree
If they’re going to play off Payne that much from outside, and he has the green light, that’s a shot he has to take. It’ll help free up the middle.

SI did a story a couple years ago
Exploring why home court advantage was a real thing. they found that the players performance varied very little home vs away. For example teams shot free throws and field goals at nearly identical statistical rates.
The difference: Officiating. Home teams tended toget way more calls than road teams.
If I can find a link in their archives i will post it

With all the complainging about B1G officiating
This tends to be why MSU goes so deep into the tournament. MUCH looser officiating. We always struggle with refs who want a tightly controlled environment and of course that’s all you see in this conference. If we can win games like these then you know we’re going to dominant in March.
It isn't tight control that is the problem...
it’s lack of consistency and calling it differently for each team.
This.
I don’t care much if a ref has a particularly tight or loose style, as long as it’s consistent. (Hightower is maddening because his style is so different from everyone else’s, but he’s at least reasonably consistent.)

the shooting has been atrocious
Especially inside, and a lot of that is due to very physical play.
Its like has been said so many times on here & in sports in general, its ok to call a game tight, but just be consistent. Several whistles against MSU tonight have gone unblown on the other end

Exactly
Everyone can get angry at me for talking about the refs, but all I’m asking for is consistency.

Consider for a moment that the worst fans of other teams are the ones that never stop complaining that the refs made them lose.
I hear ya Les
But I don’t think its difficult to agree that there have been quite a few whistles that are described as “touch” fouls, and its also easy to agree that the whistles have gone overwhelmingly in one team’s favor.
The numbers and the eye test both say so.

There have been bad calls both ways. Illinois had a hand-check call at the end of the half after both teams hand-checked all game. Leonard’s foul on Nix was also the exact same thing that was not called all game.

And just note that MSU has 2 more fouls than the Illini. And one of those was a technical.
well considering everything going against us,
Can’t hit a shot, illinois in the bonues w 11 minutes to go, and Green only playing like 8 minutes & getting shut out, the fact that were only down 2 & had a chance to tie ot take the lead going into the half reassures me that this game is winnable.

MSU is not going to win the B1G by 4 games. The toughest part of the schedule is yet to come. That’s why we need to beat UM, Ill, NW on the road, because we’re not going to beat OSU, Indiana on the road, and we’ll probably drop a couple more at home.
If we lose a couple more at home, then yes we won't win the B1G
Indiana has come waaay back to Earth. that game is just as winnable as this game or teh UM game were

Not likely to lose a couple more at home
But with WI and OSU coming in, and games at OSU, Minn, and Purdue we will likely struggle on the road.
Nothing wrong with dude. The dude abides.

I'm not particularly impressed with Minnesota or Purdue.
I think we can, and should, win both of those. Indiana is a toss-up (they seem to have come back down to earth, and their defense leaves a lot to be desired). The only road game left that we’re a serious underdog in is at OSU.

6’10 AP goes 3 for 10. Ugh.
Dawson has every right to go all Dwight Howard on his teammates tonight.
"Long range from the baseline, Swish!"
Absolutely
Dawsin was a man tonight. Did everything asked of him and then some.
TT looked like the best of all the guards.
Paynix got some #’s, but overall played very poorly IMO.
Green nonexistent, maybe the flu, maybe the fouls, obviously the knee late, but whatever the reason, he didn’t show up.
AT played fair, had a nicve putback but otherwise very quiet.
Gauna & BK each had a couple of minutes of nothing.
Is that everybody?

I thought Paynes defense was superior
and TT took several horrendously bad shots. That had to drive Coach Izzo nuts.
That is such good news!
Such a promising season with him, don’t want to think about it without him.

Don't think that's news..
so much as wishful thinking on Draymond’s part. Hoping for the best right now, expecting the worst.
ANY BODY HAVE NEWS ON THE KNEE?????
I’m in Miami and I’ve had a few too many vodka gimlets. I came back to the computer and heard:
(1) MSU lost; and
(2) Green is all hurt.
HOW IS THE KNEE?
Wood - Clarification
He is the most efficient because he only takes 6 shots a game and makes 2 of them. He plays scarred, can’t create his own shot, and when he does get a look instead of being aggressive looks to pass it right back out.
He is clearly over-matched going against Big Ten competition and having a SG avg 6 points in B1G play is not acceptable.
Sorry as an MSU Alumn I don’t just accept being a mediocre Big Ten team like the most of you seem too. I will call a spade a spade, when they play well I’ll be the first to give them praise when they put out that BS I am going to be hard on them.
Late game
Gotta say I disagree with the decision to call TO after the Illini player missed the FT & we got the ball back w 10 seconds to go.
Should have pushed & gone for the quick basket, if we make it we’re up and Illinois gets the ball w a running clock & no timeouts. Plus the TO let them set up their D.
If you miss, you can foul Illinois w like 5 seconds left if they get the board, and still have that to in pocket down no more than 3; likewise, if msu boards its own miss can call TO then.
I know this may seem nitpicky, and there are dozens of reasons msu lost that game, but at the end, that timeout & subsequent sequence didn’t win it.

Endgame unkind
This is kind of the opposite of the remorse following the UM game when a TO wasn’t called for fear they would switch to a zone.
Execution out of time outs has been terrible so probably better to just let em play.
Either way, need more practice finishing close games.
It just hasn’t gone well yet.
"Long range from the baseline, Swish!"
I'm glad I missed the second half
I covered a high school game today where the teams scored more points than these two teams. Christ, that was bad. If Green is hurt now I think I’m going to be very sad.

I tweet about stuff sometimes @jackhitts.
watched the game on replay--have avoided coming to TOC until now, but
2 things to take away—
1. We’re in deep u-no-what if Green is out for an extended period. (Nothing like stating the obvious). Dawson will collect most of his Rebs, but his points??? At least we might make fewer turnovers.
2. The only way a game consists of the home team missing a million outside shots and the visiting team missing a million inside shots is when there is a lot of fouling occurring that’s not being whistled. Nuf’ said about that. Makes for a horrible game to watch. Impossible to actually play basketball when your always being pushed, slammed, hacked and tossed around. Went both ways, but felt like we got the short end of the foul calls since refs refused to call fouls on our shots for the first 35 minutes (or maybe all 40 minutes).
Draymond update:
From @ESPNAndyKatz:
Andy Katz From MSU. Draymond Green has a knee sprain, nothing worse after MRI. He is day-to-day. Spartans don’t play until Sunday against Michigan.
Does that mean
that Draymond is day-to-DayDay?
why yes, I'm slightly drunk at the moment

Really?
I’m actually hoping there won’t be one.
This is one time I welcome Pete and the guys being too busy to write something.
I’d love the chance to un-see that debacle.
"Long range from the baseline, Swish!"
I know dude
I hated this game but I still want to read postgame coverage. I don’t subscribe to many of the stats sites and what not so their analysis is the best I get.
I was kind of joking
But it looks like they really did forego the recap.
OK guys, Draymond is going to be OK.
No need to continue the seance, we’re ready for new content now…
Anybody…
Bueller…
"Long range from the baseline, Swish!"
I just put it up.
Didn’t have any time yesterday; since it still wasn’t up I decided to write a very short one.
I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left-hand side.

Good to get those ones out early
We all know that the team is young and it certainly is still going through a growth process. Izzo teams tend to have these bad offensive nights a couple of nights through the season. It is a valuable experience and it will only sharpen the team come March.
A couple of things:
- Branden Dawson has arrived! The kid finally looks confident and healthy aswell. Good to see after we were worrying about him just a couple of weeks ago. If he starts to develop an outside shot, wow, the sky is the limit… that spin move he made was unbelievable.
- Payne and Nix still have stone hands from time to time, especially Payne. It was inexcusable for him to miss that many layups and fumble the ball around all the time. He just has to get stronger with the ball. His defense was good though against Leonard.
- I think Trice looked bad outside of that corner three he hit. He is still confident which I like but his physical limitations start to show. He just is not big or fast enough to constantly put pressure on the defense.
- The defense at times was spectacular. We did a great job at switching, fighting over screens and of denying the post. Of course it also helped that Illinois was missing everything left and right but part of that was forced.
- All in all, without DayDay, our lack of offensive playmakers really showed yesterday. Nix is a viable post option but when Appling is off, almost nobody can or looks to create for himself. Which is ok but people still have to make plays. Be it by cutting or passing or whatever.
- Floor spacing overall was a desaster among so many other things. But as I said above, a tough day like yesterday will only help to develop this team for bigger tasks in March.
- Jim Burr and his crew were a joke as usual. Full of themselves and made the game all about them. It is inexcusable to have as many stoppages (time issues, cuts etc.) and ticky tack off the ball fouls. They killed the entire flow of the game and made it looked as if a Big Ten game is run by a bunch of loaded boozers!
Best wishes to DayDay, get well soon!
