Thoughts on 2012-13 Lineup

The loss of Draymond Green will definitely sting, but with the addition of Gary Harris and several quality big men State should be a Preseason Top 10 team with Final Four and National Title aspirations.

Star-divide

Here's what I think the 2012-13 starting lineup will look like:

PG: Keith Appling, Travis Trice

SG: Gary Harris, Brandon Wood*, Brandan Kearney

SF: Branden Dawson, Russell Byrd?, Denzel Valentine

PF: Alex Gauna, Kenny Kaminski

C: Adrian Payne, Derrick Nix, Matt Costello

* I'm not entirely certain as to where I read it, but I read that Brandon Wood could earn another year of eligibility.

? At this point Russell Byrd isn't resembling the player that he was supposed to be out of High School, but hey 396 foot surgeries will do that. If he can regain form, and shooting touch, I like him to contend for this spot.

All in all, this lineup is truly stacked, and should contend for not only the B1G Title but the Nat'l Title as well.

Starting lineup

I’d bet a million pesos that the starting lineup next year is:

1. Keith
2. Harris
3. Dawson
4. Payne
5. Nix

That has scary potential.

Wow scary is right

That is three McD AA’s (Appling, Harris, Dawson), a junior who was Ohio POY for his division (Payne), and a senior former Mr. Basketball (Nix – plus Appling was Mr. Basketball the following season). And then you have backups like Costello, who was MI’s Gatorade POY – as a JUNIOR, and Kenny Kaminski, who was the top player on his AAU squad that won the under-17 national championship in summer ’11.

Projected lineups like that should shoot down the myth that Izzo’s emphasis on regional recruiting results in lower quality players.

Scarier still

There is only one senior in that line up (not counting on Wood).
Only 4 upperclassmen.
So what is the ceiling for 2013-2014? Mars conquest?

Do not forget Valentine

I see Valentine’s versatility being plugged into the rotation a lot. Will fill the void of how the offense runs through Day Day. Someone that will have a calming pressence and makes the right decisions.

Here is how I see it.

Starters: Appling, Harris (after he earns the spot), Dawson, Payne, Nix. (I think we are seeing this being forshaddowed as Izzo is going to more and more Nix AND Payne lineups this year).

2nd Team: Trice, Kearney or Valentine, Byrd, Gauna or Kaminski, and Costello

That 2nd team would beat some Big Ten starters.

Then add in Jabari Parker plus 1 more in the 2013 class with only the deparure on NIX (plus any early departure) and MSU is looking strong until the current FR class graduates. That means 2014 and 2015 and 2016 recruiting is huge (and huge in numbers)/class.

Jabari?

Adding Parker would be awesome, but I’m not holding my breath…it’s more likely that we land James Young, who is also an extremely touted 5-star recruit and is also supposedly a sure thing to sign with MSU. If we could land both, look out! This would be a ridiculously talented team, and by far the best that Izzo would’ve had to work with to date. A National Championship would basically be granted to State. That lineup would include SENIORS: Keith Appling and Adrian Payne JUNIORS: Branden Dawson, Travis Trice, and Brandan Kearney SOPHOMORES: Gary Harris, Denzel Valentine, and Matt Costello FRESHMAN: Jabari Parker and James Young……stacked, just stacked.

And You missed

Would be Juniors Byrd and Gauna and Would be Sophomore Kaminski. All considered great shooters that would really stretch defenses and likely find the court in at least some situations (Zone heavy defensive teams). You are right though…. stacked for sure.

Actually

James Young and State are supposedly cooling off on each other. He won’t grow much more it seems now and we don’t need another wing, especially if Izzo gets Drake Harris. I legitimately believe Jabari Parker is coming. Just a hunch, but nothing I’ve heard discourages it. Izzo’s been on a recruiting tear two years going, he’s not gonna peter out now.

So I also think we have a legitimate shot in the Tyus Jones/Jahlil Okafor sweepstakes. Imagine running this line up in a few years fellas:

PG: Tyus Jones
SG: Gary Harris
SF: Jabari Parker
PF: Matt Costello
C: Jahlil Okafor

Sounds pretty sweet doesn’t it
?

"That 2nd team would beat some Big Ten starters"

Says it all right there. I’m pumped to watch this team evolve into a dominant powerhouse over the next couple years.

I would take that bet.

I think we see someone like Kearney start.

Or Wood apparently, where is this eligibility thing coming from? I saw it on BTN too they were like “They’re hoping he’ll use his last year of eligibility” and I’m all like “Whatttt?”

by Loneytunes on Jan 28, 2012 1:49 AM CST up reply actions

Wow

Let’s get Jabari Parker to add to that when Nix leaves!

by StickyGreen on Jan 9, 2012 6:06 PM CST reply actions

Wood

He only has 1 year. Not sure where you are getting another year of eligibility. The rule is you have 5 years to compete 4 years (Unless you get granted a medical). This is his 5th year.

Plus, he was looking into the NBA before he transferred but thought it would be better to prove his game on the Big Ten level first. Also, hinting one and done.

Kearney and Gauna

I get more excited about those two every game. Gauna is a more polished Suton and Kearney reminds me of a smaller Tracy McGrady. Those guys are only going to improve.
