Game Thread -- Michigan State Spartans at Ohio State Buckeyes
Michigan St. Spartans at Ohio St. Buckeyes, Feb 11, 2012 5:00 PM CST
VALUE CITY ARENA -- COLUMBUS, OHIO
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2012, 6:00 PM EST
TV: ESPN (link goes to feed)
ONLINE RADIO FEED: Spartan Sports Network
IT'S TIME YOU GUYS. Most of us assumed that Ohio State would be in first place at this point in the season, and I think it's safe to say that most of us hoped that Michigan State would be second. A win here means MSU is tied for first in the Big Ten; a loss puts the Spartans two games back and their title hopes on life support.
In case you wanted to know who the officials are:
RT @OSUADAthComm: Officials for Michigan State at Ohio State: Mike Kitts, Ted Valentine, Lamont Simpson.
Faaannnnttasstic.
This is the game thread. Same rules as always: No slurs, no links to illegal game streams, and be cool to one another. Enjoy the game everyone.
GO GREEN, GO WHITE, BEAT OHIO STATE

Go Green!
Cautiously optimistic about this one. OSU is a fantastic squad (obviously) and IMO the first top tier talent we’ve played since starting with Duke & UNC. I think we’d stand a pretty good chance to beat either of those teams if we played them today and would love to see us pull out an impressive victory on the road against a team that is as talented – if not more – than either of those two.
Eek.. looks like Duke/Maryland going to run over a ton...
lot of fouls in a duke game? shocker eh.. What channel will they show the start of MSU on?
Seriously
Does anybody know where we can catch the start of ours?? Also, are we tipping off at 6 even, or later?

True, but at this stage of the game they're not really in foul trouble.
Especially given how much they’ve forced the ball to Sullinger (and how many times he’s gotten away with running people over), I’ll take it.
I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left-hand side.
Bradley-Terry rankings for college football and basketball: because there aren't enough computer rankings already.
I think we're uniquely built for success against OSU
They usually wear other teams down with size and athleticism, and run most things through Sullinger.
The first half has shown that we’re just as big and athletic, that our interior D can limit Sullinger, and that we’re more diverse than they are offensively.
HMMM...
Ted Valentine’s phone rings at halftme.
“Yes, Mr. Commissioner, I understand the league not having a number one seed really hurts. We’re doing all we can. Ohio State needs to make some shots.”
“Yes, I understand the game is in Columbus. If the foul differential gets any bigger, we’ll lose whatever legitimacy we have left.”
“Yes, Mr. Comissioner, we’ll do our best, but it’s going to be obvious what’s going on here.”

GREAT first half
Good to see Appling alive offensively, he is a major key to the teams success going forward just like many other Izzo PGs have been in the past…
Once March rolls around he will be the guy handling the ball in critical situations and the guy who will be asked to keep us going offensively in a tight game!

Has OSU only had one player come off the bench? We’ve used the entire bench and everyone’s contributed. Does OSU really have no depth?

how can you win a game
playing your starters for 40 straight minutes?! That’s just a sign of flawed coaching… you should be able to make full use of your entire team. Otherwise you’re recruiting wrong.
I don't watch the NBA, so I'm not certain
How deep do coaches usually go in the NBA? Seems like you’d expect to use the “don’t use the bench” coaching system MORE with the way they set up teams.

Hunwick's having a very lucky weekend.
That’s at least the fourth pipe we’ve hit (two yesterday, two today).

Great 5 on 8 win
Is there a special class at tOSU in whining for athletes? They piss and moan after every call that goes against them. It’s like playing against a team of BoRyans. Craft should be arrested for assault on every defensive possession. It reminded me of a Bad Boys Pistons game—a ten point blowout. Once we were up ten they could never catch up, even with the Three Banditos in the striped shirts.
Craft
I don’t know that I agree with the Craft angle here, I try hard to hate him but almost always come across really impressed at his D. He really is a great on the ball defender, he gets through screens that just about anybody I’ve ever seen, I’m surprised that there weren’t 5 second calls a couple of times. Trice really struggled when Craft was on him. Love the win Payne was impressive hopefully he has more of that down the stretch. This team is looking like a really tough out, and one of the most balanced front court/back court Izzo teams that we have seen in a while maybe ever
He's good AND he gets away with a lot
He should be called for a lot more touch fouls than he is. He swings his hands at offensive players’ arms pretty wantonly, and there’s no way he gets called for all the contact he makes

Supposedly the hoops game will be replayed at 4:30AM on ESPNU
You know, since it was hard to watch live

Michigan's had the better of play so far this period.
Midway through the third, still 2-2.

Yeah, things seem to have turned around right when I said that.
Still haven’t been able to finish one, though.

Powerplay coming
Let’s hope they take advantage, I know it’s been a problem until last weekend

Nothing on that power play.
Think we had one cannon-blast from Krug that didn’t get through and that was about it.
Horrible play by Michigan in front nearly gave it away right after, and then Michigan got a pipe shot.

I think we're more tired
That, and the game in hand leads me to think we may play to not lose rather than win

We don't really have the games in hand anymore.
We’ve jumped over Miami and Ohio State (and we’re getting the games in hand on Miami taken care of this weekend, they’re in non-conference play).

Kevin Lynch with the game-winner for Michigan. Crandell tried to block the puck and it slid right under his stick and straight to Lynch.

Having not seen much MSU hockey this year...
Are our defensemen pretty terrible generally?
We just look pretty weak on the blue line, and not just that mistake a squirt wouldn’t make that cost us the game
"It's a trap!"
Krug and Shelgren are really good.
The rest are so-so.
