Game Thread: The Michigan State Spartans vs. The Penn State Nittany Lions
Penn St. Nittany Lions at Michigan St. Spartans, Feb 8, 2012 5:30 PM CST
Your MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS vs the PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS
THE JACK BRESLIN STUDENT EVENTS CENTER -- EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2012, 6:30 PM EST
TV: BTN
ONLINE RADIO FEED: Spartan Sports Network
Coming off an impressive win against Michigan, MSU will now face Tim Frazier Penn State. I don't really think this is a trap game -- the Nittany Lions' best true road win is against Boston College (don't be fooled by the name, they're #254 in KenPom), and are one of the worst shooting teams in the nation. If MSU can deny clear paths to the basket, this should be an easy win; the bookies think so too as the line for this game is MSU -14.5
This is the game thread. Same rules as always: No slurs, no links to illegal game streams, and be cool to one another. Enjoy the game everyone.
GO GREEN, GO WHITE, BEAT PENN STATE.

We had better win this game easily
I don’t want to be even more nervous for OSU.
I didn't see the Purdue vs OSU game
was it just Purdue hitting every shot? does it give us something to gameplan on?
Yes and no.
They were in trouble, but I believe they were actually on the bench during the decisive run.
I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left-hand side.

Yes and no
D.J. Byrd was unconscious from three, but the Boilermakers also drove the ball into the lane really well. We should have a pretty good game plan.
Green triple-double
I called it here first, so I’ll look killer smart in two hours.
Tonight's going to be a good night.
He got a triple double against PSU at home last year
Let’s see if the Izzone remembers how Billy Oliver took out Delvon last year.
That's right
And good call on Oliver. I knew I remembered that name from somewhere.
Tonight's going to be a good night.

Looking forward to this game
But not the 530 start, thank goodness for the DVR, have a great game thread everyone!
Does the lack of foul calls here
mean the BTN is trying to make sure they get to the 830 start on time?

OOoooo..
A basket.. MSU blowing this thing wide open.
Hey - at this rate..
we’re going to match our Illini game score!
No reason to get in to it with Penn St players
Just remind them they are barely a D1 program
I Bleed Green.
How can we be 10 games into the big ten season
and Appling still hasn’t learned you can’t drive, jump into a defender and pass the ball and not get a charge call.
These Charging calls
are out of control. Especially for the idiots the B10 has officiating these games.
I Bleed Green.
MSU is just saving all it's made basketballs
for Saturday, right?
Really...
Appling gets hip-checked and it’s a foul on HIM?
nonsensical officiating
it’s what for dinner
I mean really.
.. we need crap-tastic officiating in an already brutally ugly/stupid game?
You expect different
from the Big 10? Not one quality official.
I Bleed Green.
by eriksmithdotcom on Feb 8, 2012 6:10 PM CST up reply actions
I think this is sufficient evidence
That there may be some home calls, but the primary issue with officiating is that they have no idea what they’re doing out there on most nights.

Exactly
Just be consistant. Is that too much to ask?

Joe Rexrode
just tweeted that there is a lot of talking out there-
So Penn St’s players suck, are dirty, and trash-talkers?
They have only one Big10 caliber player, the rest of the guys are an embarrassment to the league.
I Bleed Green.
Nice to join you all for another MSUBBALL match
Just got home – nice to see a big lead.
Nice to play this team without Battle.
From Da Chairman:
“1:13 left in 1st half. PSU is shooting 18% FG and MSU shooting 27%. Yep, my eye balls are dripping blood again.”
Yes
That is too many. Need to value possessions more.

Had it’s trap game last night and barely won, but….
Purdue is a tone better than Penn St.

Penn State is unconscious from the field too

Missed most of the first half.
But I see from the CBS boxscore that we’re about on pace to duplicate the Michigan rebounding feat (outrebounded them 11-10 at our own end, 16-3 at theirs). Green already has 9 points, 8 boards.

It pisses me off so much
That we’re being remotely challenged by these guys. Not a shred of talent besides Frazier.

Wow just got caught up to live from DVR
And man, looked like we had this in the bag, then WTF
Also, even before they started coming back, I notice Drobjnak #21 is nothing but an elbow throwing, in the back pushing thug.
They are all thugs
That’s my whole complaint. Our fouls are all ticky-tack and they are knocking guys with position down.
I Bleed Green.
by eriksmithdotcom on Feb 8, 2012 7:20 PM CST up reply actions
Yeah on one sequence earlier,
21 shoved Payne out of the way to get space, then threw an elbow into his upper chest as he went in for the layup. But the guy does have 4 fouls on him in 14 minutes
Oh but also
the screen called against Payne in the late 1st half was BS, the guy ran straight into him, Payne was set. He just dropped like a rag doll so the ref felt he had to call something
Seriously
Put them away, they had their little run, time for this to end, though. PSU isn’t going to shoot 80% the entire rest of the game.
Backwards four-point play!
1 of 2 FTs, get the board, bury a 3.

Nice footwork there Nix
He’s been quiet most of the game, between PSU frustrating him, and Payne, Dawson & Green all in beast mode, he hasn’t been on the floor much tonight. But good to see that layup fall for him after the nice move near the hole
Good to see
especially after last year’s team did not excel in these situations.

can you ask JG Wentworth to send me some cash now?
"Long range from the baseline, Swish!"
This is how player of the year candidates respond
to a challenge from a clearly inferior team. We would all have lower blood pressure if he had spread this out across the second half rather than this flurry at the end, but I’ll take it.
Speaking of which

Please dear lord and baby Jesus let Appling find his shot by Saturday!!!!
We will win a share of the B1G if he gets out of this shooting slump, and if not were just slightly above average.
Yeah, I have this marked down as a surprise upset for Neb.

Probably.
They’ve had a rough time on the road this year, and Nebraska is no pushover. Michigan will probably win but it won’t be comfortable.

rarely see a guy miss a shot by that much
Yeah he just wasn't set at all
I think he just really wants to hit a few shots, can’t blame him, but his body was awul on that one
Dawson and 1 Summer
God I can’t weight to see Dawson next year with a year in the weight room. He is so good around the basket for a 3.
Yeah I think the weights
are the least of Dawson’s problems. Kearney, Gauna, Trice, Payne? Yeah lift, lift, lift. But Dawson needs to work on the finesse parts of his games.
Wait*
I may get an award for worst spelling / grammar on this blog.
lol go Huskers
And not just bc I hate M & all things Maize & Blue, but I want more separation in the B1G race. But mostly bc I hate M & all things Maize & Blue.
I cheer for Nebraska basketball
because I feel bad for them, moving into the Big Ten this year after doing surprisingly well in their old conference last year. Big Ten was already a step up basketball wise, but this year the depth is ridiculous and Nebraska has just been getting shit on by every team it seems.
Question: Which is worse? Nebraska or Penn State?
I'd lean Penn State, but it's arguable.
Iowa had an abysmal non-conference run but they’ve turned sneaky competent in conference.

I just can't be on board with this sentiment.
Ressentiment just ain’t my thing, and I don’t think it should be for any of us.
I don't think it's always the Nietzschean thing
I think it’s rivalry in a lot of cases. They are our rival and we want them to do poorly. This is the diff between their “rivalry” with OSU and the one with us. They want OSU to win every game except against them so they can beat a good team. We have a real rivalry where we want to be clearly better than them, therefore we want them to lose early and often.

Well, the path to the final score wasn't necessarily what we hoped.
But the score itself is just fine. (Eerily, that’s two in a row that Kenpom has nailed the exact margin of victory.)

I just hope he's not the next Isaiah Dahlmann
for his sake, would hate to see him ride the pine his whole career. But at the same time, he will have every opportunity next season, no reason he cannot be ahead of KK or Costello for first wing off the bench.
O$U Time!
I think we match up well against them, but we really need to be sharp on offense.
Hopefully Draymond goes beast mode, and steal one.
I hate Thad Matta he’s as dirty as Tressel.
Draymond will be okay
we really need dawson/paynix to win their matchups (or at least play about even)

Sullinger's older brother played for OSU recently..
You gotta think that helped OSU’s changes and that they wouldn’t have to cheat to get him.
Sullinger
He was an O$U recruit all the way, but I’m sure that didn’t stop Matta from delivering him an Acura like Tressel got for Pryor.
O$U Recruiting = a rap video
You sound like a purdue fan...
Matta is just a hell of a recruiter.
+1
he’s got all of the regression, none of the dope smoking (as far as i know)
Smotrcyz looks so small for being 6'9" out there
It’s like Herzog, he was the smallest 7 footer on the floor I can ever remember seeing.
Lots of big matchups tonight
- G’Town up 2 in OT at #2 ’Cuse
- Baylor up 12 with 90 seconds to go at #6 Kansas
And of course, the battle of Tobacco Road, #10 DOOK at #5 UNC, is about to tip off on ESPN.
Starting a line with # turns it into a numbered list.
That’s the one bit of autoformatting that the posts do that drives me nuts.

possible red-shirts next year. Kaminski? Byrd could be a transfer or becomes our next Dahlman—-simply not ready for prime time—-can probably beat you in a game of horse. it i slike being a 2 on the driving range but can’t bring it to the course. Kearney will earn minutes next year—4 guards + Valentine (Kearney, Trice, Appling, Harris) Valentine to back up the 3 a little?
nix has taken a step back as of late—if he has a slow start—-he becomes frustrated—-needs to recognize wehen the double comes and play a little inside-outside—-also needs to recognize that he needs to establish position on th elow block not 10 feet away—-work in progress
Appling needs to catch and shoot——can’t continue to measure his shot—pull the trigger and shoot w/ confidence—-need him to be more of an outside threat and stretch the defense.
19-5 not bad—-just imagine if we didn’t have those two one point losses——should of was a good old dog—-if, if, if—-if my grandmother had balls—she’d be my grandmother
good luck in columbus
I am willing to wait a while on Byrd
The guy is for all intents and purposes and true freshman, at least in his conditioning. He’s spent two years away from intense playing time, he is recovering from multiple foot surgeries and this is his FIRST SEASON of seeing the court in the Big Ten. Stack all of those things up and he has a steep learning curve. Not everyone is going to come in and automatically be a stud. Think about the learning curve for Dawson, Trice, and Kearney, and they were coming in healthy and with a head of steam. Byrd didn’t have that luxury unfortunately. Think if we had given up on Austin Thornton before the last 15 or so games this season. We’d have given up on a highly valuable asset who didn’t come into his own until his (5th) Senior year. Byrd may not be a stud for another two years, but if Izzo believes he can help us win, Byrd will most likely find his niche at some point. Almost all of Izzo’s players eventually do. Give him some time, if he sticks with it and stays healthy he will contribute. I am just kind of tired of people piling on a guy who will obviously need some time to regain his prior form and confidence.
