NCAA Presidents Approve Four-Team College Football Playoff

Although Duffy Daugherty proposed the idea almost 50 years ago, college football finally is set to have a playoff. The new system only includes four teams — making it more of a "plus-one," since it includes the bowls — but it's a step forward for the sport. Most of the details have yet to be hammered out, but there will be a selection committee, the semifinals will be rotated among six bowls, the championship will be at a neutral site and this begins in 2014. You wonder why it took this long for conferences to realize they would make more money this way. Daugherty knew it back in 1966. Eight teams is a better way to do it, but this was an important step.
