This was Duffy Daugherty's first game as head coach, and it was a 14-10 loss at Iowa. MSU finished the year 3-6 after having posted three straight nine-win seasons and two national championships under Biggie Munn. But MSU would rebound, going 9-1 the next year and claiming a national championship.
