On the eve... Err rather early morning of what could be a monumental day in Spartan Football, I felt compelled to write some thoughts on this season. I have waited so long for a season like this. I am 24 and have never seen my favorite team play in a Rose Bowl. Outside of one season I've never really even allowed myself to dream of such a possibility. And the moment I saw the Wisconsin punter get ran into in 2011, I felt a pain I've never felt before inside that Grand Rapids B-dubs.
Then this season happened. A team that couldn't score points against USF, WMU and Notre Dame. I was prepared to watch the best defense in my fandom be relegated to an 8-5 season. However, something special has happened these last few weeks. Connor Cook has emerged. Our defense took down a UM team and never let it be close unlike past years (Tate Forcier driving in the rain). Then we went to Nebraska and got our first win over the Huskers in program history. 6-0 in the B1G, beating every opponent by at least 12. This is my Spartans... Really.
And as we sit here..one victory from a Legends Division crown and 2nd B1G championship game in 3 years, pessimism still courses through our fan base. We are always waiting for that other shoe to drop or that chance to yell out "This is why we can't have nice things!!" And I get it guys. I walked out of Spartan Stadium like a soaked zombie after seeing Notre Dame storm back against Drew Stanton. I was there when I celebrated with my grandma as Domata Peko scored a Fat Guy touchdown only to have that game slip away. I watched Braylon Edwards beat us in 3OT on a big screen at Munn Arena, then faced a locker room of UM fans at the rink the next day.
Guys, this team is not old teams and they are not doomed to repeat it. Past teams didn't have a Max Bullough, Denicos Allen, Fou Fonoti, Denard. Who cares that we were 0-7 against Nebraska all time? This team hadn't played Nebraska 7 times. And yes we have had talented teams get tripped up by Northwestern in the past. But I think this years team has earned our trust and confidence in them, to believe they will not meet the same fate.
Enjoy today Spartans. Today is a day to be savored and relished. I've seen my baseball team win 3 world series, I was in St. Louis in 2007 for Justin Abdelkader's goal. Ive been lucky as a sports fan but the one thing missing is MSU in a Rose Bowl. 24 years.. And this may be only the 2nd time I can see my team compete for a Rose Bowl berth. Stop worrying and enjoy this time we are in and enjoy this football team.
I love The Only Colors community and hope to see you all in a Post game Victory Thread. If you drive by my house tomorrow in suburban Grand Rapids I hope you hear "Some Type of Way" blaring loudly. Go Green! Go White! #ChaseIt
