Kansas Adjusted Stats and Analysis

Hello everyone, the upcoming game against Kansas should be a good one and there are a couple of worrying stats for Kansas which will hopefully not come into too much play during the game. I hope to do this for all of MSU’s big games in the future as well as for most of conference play. The adjusted stats will be up first with the analysis coming up right after.

The Jayhawks are 4-1 early into the season with their one loss being an absolute shellacking at the hands of Kentucky during the Champions Classic. This Kansas team lost a lot of talent to the NBA draft and while they did pull in one of the best recruiting classes in the country, the freshman have as of yet not truly broken out like the Embiid, Wiggins pairing last year. They are also still a pretty young squad in they only have 1 senior on the entire team and he rarely plays. They use a 10 man rotation consisting of 6 guards and 4 forwards, and while this might look like this would be a smaller team only 2 of those guards are smaller than 6-5, Mason and Graham, and only 3 rotation players are shorter than 6-7, the aforementioned two and Selden Jr.

Starting with the backcourt, despite the 5 inch difference in size, Selden Jr. and Mason have basically the same stats. Selden Jr. is the better passer and rebounder, while Mason is the better shooter and defender. Neither of them shoot the three often, 2-3 a game, and while Mason is shooting 50% Selden only shoots 31% from behind the line. The final starter in the backcourt is Mykhailuk, a sharpshooter from Ukraine, or so they say considering that he is only shooting 22% from deep while also taking the most attempts on the team. For reference the 18 three pointers attempted is the same amount as Clark who is a distant fourth on MSU. As a plus none of these guards are particularly great rebounders, and their passing is nowhere near as crisp as MSU’s, leading us to the frontcourt.

The starting Frontcourt is led by Perry Ellis who leads the team in points per game and has the best efficiency of all the starters. He is not a particularly great rebounder, but also does not get into foul trouble often. His real strength however is getting to the free throw line where he averages a crazy 8 attempts per game. A starter in name only Lucas only plays about 11 minutes a game. With those minutes he has very good rebounding numbers and is a distant first in both of the stealing metrics. He is not a major threat on offense.

The first off the bench is Cliff Alexander, whom MSU fans are a little familiar with. He is a major presence down low, especially on the offensive glass. He has the second highest block percentage on the team and also gets to the line 5-6 times a game. Next is Traylor who is another forward. He is an elite blocker and is mainly in the rotation due to his defense. On offense however he looks to be a liability. Next is Greene, a 6-7 guard, who is one of their better 3pt shooters, but is a pretty poor rebounder for his size. Next is Graham, a 6-2 guard, who is a pretty efficient shooter but is mainly the 4th option whenever he is on the court. Finally the last person in the rotation is Oubre Jr. another 5 star recruit who is a pretty good rebounder but turns the ball over like it’s going out of style.

All in all this game is going to be an interesting contrast of styles with Kansas trying to feed the post and look for a lot of attempts at the free throw line. This is basically hitting MSU right in the weakness of the team and State need really big games from Costello and Schilling in order to hopefully not see the dreaded conga line of free throws from the Kansas big men. In a crazy stat Kansas has taken 143 free throws in 5 games while MSU has 83 attempts in 6. Kansas however, does not force a lot of turnovers and I feel that State’s up-tempo pace will hopefully throw them out of whack. This will hopefully be a good game, although I am pretty fearful that the refs will have a large say in how this game goes. Go Green!
