Going to I-Drive BW3 for the MSU-Minny Basketball Game We’ll be at BW3, 7004 International Drive, Orlando, to watch the MSU-Minny basketball game (December 31, 4pm). I’ve heard that it’s booked for an MSU watch party. If any of the TOC crowd make it there, I’ll be wearing a "Block S" MSU baseball hat and a "GREEN MACHINE" T-shirt. C’mon up and say hi! CPT Hoolie is organizing an informal meetup this afternoon for those of you currently in the Orlando area

Despite being the site of countless palm trees and other hints of warm weather, the temperature here was in mid-40s when Alabama held its afternoon practice Sunday, with wind gust up to 35 mph, according to the Weather Channel. Today's forecast calls for temperatures in the low-50s, with sunshine and winds of 15 mph. Temperatures are expected to warm toward the end of the week with a game-day forecast of partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 79 degrees for the Capital One Bowl on Saturday against Michigan State.

[Brandan] Kearney was great. He showed off his ability to dominate a game through defense as the front man in Southeastern’s smothering zone. He’s quick enough to stay with any guard and so long that’s it’s really hard to get a pass around him or shoot over him. On offense, he started slow but found a groove, and kept it going the remainder of the game. He connected on an array of shots from three point range and mid-range. He also scored taking the ball to the basket on a number of drives and backdoor cuts. Kearney’s ability as a passer was also on display as he consistently got the ball to Percy Gibson, who also had a heck of a game. Gibson, a Dayton commit, was a force around the basket and finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Kearney controlled the game for the Jungaleers and finished with 24 points.

"The early-season schedule has given us some great opportunity to do a lot of things," Izzo said. "If you look at it, we’ve played against one of the best zones in America (Syracuse). We’ve played against some of the best point guards, maybe, in the last 10 years. If you look at the number of great point guards that we’ve played against so far, it’s mind-boggling. "We played against one of the better 3-point shooting teams in Washington; one of the better low-post games that we’ll face, when you look at (Oakland’s Keith) Benson and (Will) Hudson, their one-two punch, playing against the quality of players they’ve played against, is probably the best one-two punch we’ll face this year inside. We played against a pressing team, in South Carolina. And we’ve played against a ton of All-Americans."

The coach looks on the bright side of life Also: Keith Appling will continue to start. Which I think is a good thing. If this team is going to be successful long-term, Appling will need to be a big part of it.

. . . four of the sport's top programs -- Duke, Michigan State, Kentucky and Kansas -- have committed to create the Champions Classic, an early-season marquee event debuting in 2011 and televised by ESPN. The first Champions Classic is set for Madison Square Garden in New York, with Duke facing Michigan State and Kentucky meeting Kansas on Nov. 15, 2011. Year 2 at the Gerogia Dome in Atlanta will see Michigan State vs. Kansas and Duke vs. Kentucky on Nov. 13, 2012. The third event, Nov. 12, 2013 at the United Center in Chicago, will have Michigan State playing Kentucky and Kansas playing Duke.

Scheduling news not particularly well-timed for MSU fans: Duke AND MSG next year!

To go to the Rose Bowl, MSU needs OSU to lose to either Iowa or Michigan. That's all it takes -- one OSU loss, which would put MSU into a tie with Wisconsin. Because the Spartans beat the Badgers earlier this year, MSU has the tiebreaker and would control its own destiny. To have any chance of an at-large bid, MSU needs Wisconsin to lose to either Michigan or Northwestern. If both OSU and Wisconsin win out, the Big Ten's two BCS berths would be taken right there, meaning an 11-1 MSU team would end up in the Capital One Bowl, which is yet another example of how crappy the BCS is.

As far as game day, how do your responsibilities change, being the acting head coach? One of the adjustments we've already made and talked through as a staff is I will be on the field. Typically, as a playcaller, I've been in the box. So I'll be down on the field, and then certainly, as issues may potentially arise when it comes to game management, be able to handle those. And also have a bead on the team and be able to closely connect with them as opposed to doing it through a headset. It's not the first time that we've done that where I've been on the field, so it's not like that part is totally new. From that standpoint, we've done it before and it's been effective, so we'll continue to move forward and do what we need to do. Big Ten Q&A: MSU's Don Treadwell - Big Ten Blog - ESPN

"Look at Michigan State,'' one coach said. "They're there every year. When you see the dips, then you wonder. What happened? What didn't happen? But a guy like Tom Izzo, he's there every year because you know what his program is about and so do his players. There's a consistency and an integrity.''
