Conclusion: Keith Appling is not gun shy. Appling attempted a game-high 15 shots from the field in last night's McDonald's All-American Game. Unfortunately, he only converted 4 of them, scoring 10 points for the West team to go with 2 assists and 1 turnover in 17 minutes. Future Buckeye Jared Sullenger was the star among the stars, scoring 22 points in front of his hometown fans in a losing effort for the East team (107-104). Appling won the skills contest held Monday night, by the way, so there's definitely some talent there for Tom Izzo to work with starting this fall.

A year after helping Detroit Pershing win the Class A state championship, Appling is the 30th recipient of the Hal Schram Mr. Basketball award, given annually to state state’s top senior by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, in conjunction with the Free Press. [ . . . ]

A year ago Appling’s teammate, Derrick Nix, now a freshman at Michigan State, won the award. This is the first time since Lansing Eastern’s Sam Vincent (1982) and Robert Henderson (1982) won the first two Mr. Basketball awards that a school had consecutive winners. [ . . . ]

The 6-2 Appling received 328 first-place votes, more than double the number received by Zeigler (114), and was named on 507 of the 646 ballots cast.

For those with time to watch the video of the game, what do you see Appling's role being in the MSU backcourt next season and beyond? -KJ] For those of you who enjoy watching future Spartan players in action, here is the full video of the matchup between Keith Appling's Detroit Pershing and Ray McCallum's Detroit Country Day thanks to lifeinlansing.com. Appling is already signed to MSU for 2010, while McCallum is on the radar of UCLA, Arizona, Florida, and his own father's Detroit squad. These two are, along with Trey Zeigler, the best senior guards in the state and this game puts them in action head-to-head. McCallum and DCD came out on top this time but Appling showed why even UMHoops is granting him high praise. The quality is good with Nick Chase and Sam Hosey doing the broadcasting.
