CMU - MSU Game Review, Part 2

[Bump.  Great stuff here.  --LVS.]

2nd quarter follows.  This is where things start to go downhill for MSU offensively, especially when Nichol is in.

Situation Offensive Formation Play Comments
2nd Quarter
Central Michigan at 15:00
1st and Goal at MSU 6 Shotgun trips Dan LeFevour sacked for a loss of 3 yards to the MchSt 9. 4-2-5 defense. This is a designed QB draw, not a sack. Jones and Gordon show blitz; at the snap, they both blitz but Jones takes two steps, stops, and drops back while Gordon flies past the center who is seeking out Jones in the second level. LeFevour starts to run the draw, sees Gordon in the hole, and has to take off. Meanwhile there is good backside pressure from Anderson who just flat-out beats his man around the corner. LeFevour takes off and right runs into the arms of Worthy.
2nd and Goal at MSU 9 Shotgun Dan LeFevour pass complete to Sean Skergan for 4 yards to the MchSt 5. 4-3. CMU lines up in a shotgun with two slot receivers up on the LOS, a formation not previously seen this game. The D tackles twist. The two slot receivers run a criss cross / rub off, and Gordon and Denson switch, but the receiver that Gordon switches to gets a step while Gordon has to stop and reverse direction. LeFevour hits him in stride, and Gordon takes a good angle to knock the receiver OOB for a short gain.
3rd and Goal at MSU 5 Shotgun trips Dan LeFevour sacked for a loss of 9 yards to the MchSt 14. 4-3. Jenrette walks up to the line to show blitz, then backs out. Then Gordon and Jones show blitz; they time it right before the snap. The CMU OG picks up Gordon's blitz and the OT gets Neely, leaving Worthy unblocked. Meanwhile Anderson has beat his man off the edge, as has Neely. LeFevour sees Anderson, turns to run and is sacked by the converging Worthy, Anderson, and Neely.
4th and Goal at MSU 14   Andrew Aguila 31 yard field goal GOOD.
Andrew Aguila kickoff for 54 yards returned by Glenn Winston for 14 yards to the MchSt 30.
DRIVE TOTALS: CMich drive: 11 plays 46 yards, 04:57 CMich FG     Once CMU got inside the red zone, MSU was able pressure LeFevour. This is for two reasons: one, they blitzed; and two, CMU lacked the vertical space to stretch the MSU defense.

Michigan State at 14:47
1st and 10 at MSU 30 I formation Caulton Ray rush for 2 yards to the MchSt 32. Nichol's turn under center. CMU starts in a 4-2-5. D.J. Young is in at right tackle now replacing the ineffective Moss. Young locks up and drives his man back and sideways while Deane gets to the second level, opening up a nice hole, but unfortunately the playside corner has read the hole and steps around Young's block and hits Ray before he can burst through.
2nd and 8 at MSU 32 I formation Larry Caper rush for 3 yards to the MchSt 35. CMU in a 4-3 under. Another run to the right side; all the MSU linemen are driving forward and toward the strong side, leaving the backside DE and the under LB untouched. Caper goes inside of his blocking wall and is stuffed by said untouched rushers. Looks like a blown assignment, but not sure if it's Caper or the OL.
3rd and 5 at MSU 35 Shotgun trips Keith Nichol pass incomplete. CMU in a 4-2-5. Good blocking on the left side, but Deane lets the DT get past him. Nichol throws under to the crossing Charlie Gantt (who lined up in the slot) but Nichol has to throw off his back foot andthrows behind Gantt. I don't understand the illegal formation penalty, it was explained as "five men in the backfield", but the replay shows that the outside receiver is only about a half a yard of the LOS but is dead even with the receiver on the other side of the LOS. A pretty weak call but made irrelevant by the incomplete pass.
4th and 5 at MSU 35   Aaron Bates punt for 54 yards, returned by Antonio Brown for 6 yards to the MchSt 35, CENTRL MICHIGAN penalty 9 yard illegal block accepted. Good work by special teams. Jones is the one who draws the illegal block.
DRIVE TOTALS: MchSt drive: 3 plays 5 yards, 01:38 MchSt PUNT

Central Michigan at 11:38
1st and 10 at CMU 8 Shotgun Dan LeFevour pass complete to Bryan Anderson for 42 yards to the 50 yard line for a 1ST down. State in a 4-3 with Denson up on the LOS outside the DE. Denson blitzes at the snap; he is picked up by the RB. Jones on the delayed blitz gets picked up by the TE. LeFevour releases the ball just before the pocket collapses on him. Rucker is step for step with the receiver but doesn't get his head around and Anderson makes the catch for a big gain.
1st and 10 at MSU 50 Shotgun Dan LeFevour pass complete to Cody Wilson for 12 yards to the MchSt 38 for a 1ST down. State in the 4-2-5 look again with Denson on the slot receiver. Jones and Gordon blitz again; Jones is cut by the OG. The slot receiver runs laterally taking Denson with him; while the man outside him runs a five yard curl and squats in the flat and the safety (Robinson) is too deep to help. Robinson slips but is able to make the tackle along with Hyde who has run all the way around the umpire. Good athletic play by Robinson and Hyde, but it's another CMU first down. Another example of local superiority of numbers by the CMU offense; they are giving 2 defenders the choice of 3 receivers to cover.
1st and 10 at MSU 38 Shotgun H-back Dan LeFevour rush for 2 yards to the MchSt 36. Base 4-3. Weakside slot receiver motions and gets the fake from LeFevour, who pulls it down, but Denson does a good job sniffing out the draw and stepping up into the hole. LeFevour tries to bounce outside to the strongside, sees Gordon filling, and cuts back to the middle where Denson and Robinson converge on him.
2nd and 8 at MSU 36 Shotgun H-back Dan LeFevour pass incomplete. Base 4-3. Zone stretch fake; the H-back pulls under and hits the otherwise unblocked Rolf, then releases. Rolf reads this well and jumps up, knocking down the pass. Good play by Rolf.
3rd and 8 at MSU 36 Shotgun Dan LeFevour pass complete to David Blackburn for 7 yards to the MchSt 29. 3-3-5 with Jones rushing stand-up on the weakside. NT and weakside DE twist. Jones gets around his man but is held up. LeFevour dumps off to the short receiver in the flat. Kendall Davis-Clark lines him up for what would have been a 3 yard gain but overcommits and whiffs. Jeremy Ware leads low on the tackle with his shoulder and Blackburn hurdles him, but Gordon stays high and knocks Blackburn down. Poor tackling on display here.
4th and 1 at MSU 29   Timeout CENTRL MICHIGAN, clock 09:21. CMU debates whether to kick or go, and ends up taking a timeout.
4th and 1 at MSU 29 Shotgun Dan LeFevour rush for 2 yards to the MchSt 27 for a 1ST down. Base 4-3 with the 4-2-5 look again; Gordon moves to blitz off the weakside edge as does Rucker off the weakside corner. Jones crashes at the snap and fills the intended gap; LeFevour is stopped initially, but Denson has pursued too far inside and LeFevour is able to spin out of the hit and get the first down.
1st and 10 at MSU 27 Shotgun Antonio Brown rush for a loss of 1 yard to the MchSt 28. Base 4-3 with corners pressing. Slot receiver (Brown) motions to a Pistol set; LeFevour fakes to the RB and pitches to Brown. Anderson is untouched and bites on the fake handoff; when LeFevour makes the pitch to Brown he is outside of Anderson -- almost a "pitch-screen", But Anderson is able to change direction and maintain pursuit and Hyde closes quickly, knocking the runner out for a loss.
2nd and 11 at MSU 28 Shotgun Timeout CENTRL MICHIGAN, clock 08:28. LeFevour doesn't read his play signal correctly [looks like "Leon's Getting Larger / z" but he missed the Leon part] from the sideline and has to call time out.
2nd and 11 at MSU 28 Shotgun Dan LeFevour pass intercepted by Jeremy Ware at the MchSt 7, returned for no gain to the MchSt 7. Base 4-3. Great swim move by Kevin Pickelman at DT to get around the OG; LeFevour has to get rid of it before getting sacked and throws it behind the receiver and right into the hands of Jeremy Ware.
DRIVE TOTALS: CMich drive: 8 plays 64 yards, 03:17 CMich INT

Michigan State at 8:21
1st and 10 at MSU 7 I formation big Caulton Ray rush for a loss of 1 yard to the MchSt 6. Unbalanced line right with Linthicum at H-back; he motions to a Power I. CMU in a base 4-3; at the snap the linebackers step up and read. Linthicum seals the DE but the pulling Jared McGaha fails to get outside andtake the outside backer, allowing him to make the stop on Ray behind the LOS. Another good tackle by a CMU defender: hit, wrap, and twist.
2nd and 11 at MSU 6 I formation big Keith Nichol rush for 5 yards to the MchSt 11. 4-3 under. Nichol PA fake, rolls out like he wants to throw, then tucks it and runs for 5. I believe this is a designed run.
3rd and 6 at MSU 11 Shotgun trips Keith Nichol pass incomplete. Motions to a shotgun formation. CMU in a 4-3 under, blitzing MLB. Nichol has two receivers on slants; he throws it behind the near one and too low for the far one. Not sure who was the intended target or what happened, but this is a bad throw; I think he got rattled by the pressure.
4th and 6 at MSU 11   Aaron Bates punt for 42 yards, returned by Antonio Brown for 17 yards to the MchSt 36. CMU starts with great field position.
DRIVE TOTALS: MchSt drive: 3 plays 4 yards, 01:21 MchSt PUNT

Central Michigan at 7:00
1st and 10 at MSU 36 Shotgun H-back Antonio Brown pass complete to Dan LeFevour for 24 yards to the MchSt 36, MICHIGAN ST penalty 6 yard face mask accepted for a 1ST down. Base 4-3 with Denson on the slot again. Brown motions and takes the handoff from LeFevour, who runs a wheel route. Ware bites on the handoff and vacates the area, failing to notice LeFevour on the route. He is wide open when Brown hits him. Ware and Robinson both miss tackling him, and Rucker overcommits as well and has to grab LeFevour's face mask to prevent him from scoring. Great trick play call by CMU in a low-risk, high reward situation.
1st and Goal at MSU 6 Shotgun H-back Dan LeFevour rush for no gain to the MchSt 6. A weird formation with an H-back between OG and OT and the RB outside him. Almost looks like a single-wing. MSU is in a 4-3 base. Weakside slot receiver motions and takes the fake as the two backfield guys run outside to block like a sweep. LeFevour pulls it down and tries to go outside the tackle, but Worthy has thrown off his block and is leaning outside, while Hyde is reading QB all the way. LeFevour tries to cut back inside, but Jones steps up and Gordon, who crashed at the snap, has fought off his blocker, and LeFevour has nowhere to go.
2nd and Goal at MSU 6 Shotgun H-back Dan LeFevour pass complete to Antonio Brown for 6 yards for a TOUCHDOWN. MSU in base 4-3. H-back motions across, then runs the underneath out route. Marcus Hyde bites on this and lets Brown get past him on the flag route. Brown is wide open for the TD.
Andrew Aguila extra point GOOD. CMU takes its first lead of the day, 13-10.
Andrew Aguila kickoff for 66 yards returned by Glenn Winston for 24 yards to the MchSt 28.
DRIVE TOTALS: CMich drive: 3 plays 36 yards, 01:11 CMich TD

Michigan State at 5:49
1st and 10 at MSU 28 I formation Keith Nichol pass complete to Blair White for 10 yards to the MchSt 28, CENTRL MICHIGAN penalty 19 yard personal foul accepted for a 1ST down. CMU in a 4-3 base, blitzes the Will backer. WR screen to White, he gets a good block from B.J. Cunningham to spring him. White tries to juke the safety but can't; he is already forced out of bounds when he is hit by the linebacker Bellore.
1st and 10 at CMU 43 I formation Keith Nichol pass complete to Blair White for 22 yards to the CMich 21 for a 1ST down. CMU in a 4-3 under. PA naked bootleg; Nichols throws on the run and hits White on the 20 yard out route.
1st and 10 at CMU 21 Ace big Larry Caper rush for 5 yards to the CMich 16. Unbalanced right with Linthicum at the H-back; he motions to a Power I. CMU in a 4-3 over with the SAM backer outside the TE. Safety is stepping up. At the snap, SAM backer stays home; Caper has to cut back inside to the pile. He is able to keep his legs driving and gets a couple more yards.
2nd and 5 at CMU 16 Ace big Keith Nichol pass complete to Charlie Gantt for 16 yards for a TOUCHDOWN. Again unbalanced right with Hawken at the h-back; he motions in and back. Gantt releases and heads straight into the seam; Nichol finds him for the TD.
Brett Swenson extra point GOOD. 17-13 MSU, 2nd lead change of the day.
Dan Conroy kickoff for 61 yards returned by Antonio Brown for 16 yards to the MchSt 30, MICHIGAN ST penalty 15 yard personal foul accepted. Stupid penalty by Jenrette (forearm blow to the head after the ball carriers was already down).
DRIVE TOTALS: MchSt drive: 4 plays 72 yards, 01:33 MchSt TD

Central Michigan at 4:16
1st and 10 at CMU 40 Shotgun Dan LeFevour pass complete to Antonio Brown for 10 yards to the 50 yard line for a 1ST down. Base 4-3. WR screen. The corner was in bump & run on the outside receiver leaving the inside receiver with a 10 yard cushion from the safety Robinson.
1st and 10 at MSU 50 Shotgun trips Paris Cotton rush for 5 yards to the MchSt 45. MSU in the 4-3 with Denson out on the hash. Zone stretch handoff; Pickelman fights off the double and keeps the intended gap closed. Cotton cuts back up inside where he is met by Hyde who doesn't overcommit.
2nd and 5 at MSU 45 Shotgun Paris Cotton rush for a loss of 3 yards to the MchSt 48. Base 4-3 with Denson out to the hash but inside the receiver. Jones and Gordon blitz. Veer play; but Gordon is already through the LOS and runs Cotton down from behind for the loss.
3rd and 8 at MSU 48 Shotgun trips Dan LeFevour pass complete to Cody Wilson for 6 yards to the MchSt 42. State in a 3-3-5 with Jones on the outside as a stand-up rusher. CMU runs the trips overload with the uncovered receiver running the out curl. LeFevour gets this off in a hurry but the play is well read by Hyde and Rucker and they are able to stop the receiver short of the first down.
4th and 2 at MSU 42   Brett Hartmann punt for 42 yards for a touchback.
DRIVE TOTALS: CMich drive: 4 plays 18 yards, 02:19 CMich PUNT

Michigan State at 1:57
1st and 10 at MSU 20 Ace big Keith Nichol pass incomplete to B.J. Cunningham. CMU in a 4-3 under. Nichol has lots of time but just overthrows a wide open Cunningham on the post as the safety gets turned around watching the tight end. That one was going to be six as the only person within ten yards of Cunningham was the back judge.
2nd and 10 at MSU 20 I formation Caulton Ray rush for 7 yards to the MchSt 27. Good push by the O-line; Ray is able to burst through the hole but runs into Stipek who is a good seven yards downfield. Good block by Hawken to seal the DT from closing the hole. Stipek is filling in ably for Nitchman.
3rd and 3 at MSU 27   Timeout MICHIGAN ST, clock 01:33.
3rd and 3 at MSU 27 Ace Keith Nichol rush for 3 yards to the MchSt 30 for a 1ST down. Motion into a shotgun. CMU in a base 4-3; Will backer drops to cover the slot as the safety steps up at the snap. I think Stipek was expecting either a blitz or Foreman's help on the DT as he put his hand out on the DT then let him go and ends up blocking no one; meanwhile Foreman is helping Cironi double the DE. Nichol has to pull it down and take off. Ray picks up the unblocked DT so Nichol can escape. Nichol runs into Moss who is taking care of the other DE; Nichol manages to escape, evade the MLB, and stretch for the first. A heroic effort where none would have been required had the blocking been correct.
1st and 10 at MSU 30 Shotgun Keith Nichol rush for 9 yards to the MchSt 39. Base 4-3 over. TE releases; Nichol sees an opening, takes off. Looks like he still wants to throw, then tucks the ball. He breaks three tackles and gets out close to the first down before he is finally brought down. Good hard run by Nichol.
2nd and 1 at MSU 39 Shotgun Keith Nichol pass incomplete. CMU in a 4-2-5. Over (SAM) LB blitzes and gets his hand up to tip the pass intended for the TE on the under release.
3rd and 1 at MSU 39 Shotgun Keith Nichol pass incomplete. CMU in a 4-2-5. Nichol has time, then pocket breaks down. Nichol has to move. He doesn't see Ray who has released into the flat and is wide open for the first down; instead he chucks it at the feet of Gantt who is double covered. Young QB mistake, needs to learn to check down. Oh yeah, there's a holding penalty on Foreman which is declined.
4th and 1 at MSU 39   Aaron Bates punt for 57 yards, downed at the CMich 4.
DRIVE TOTALS: MchSt drive: 6 plays 19 yards, 01:20 MchSt PUNT     That missed touchdown is going to bite us later, part 2.

Central Michigan at 0:37
1st and 10 at CMU 4 I-formation big Bryan Schroeder rush for no gain to the CMich 4. Whaddya know, CMU has a formation other than shotgun! This is strictly a run out the clock handoff right into the line.
End of 2nd Quarter MSU has a 4-point halftime lead but it should be much more…
