A note on commenting

What's going on here?

Yesterday, a post about Kirk Cousins' spectacular NFL debut quickly morphed into an argument about MSU football coaches. Before things spiraled out of control, I closed the comments. What was supposed to be a discussion celebrating the success of a great Spartan turned into a chance to start ripping someone else.

This string of threads turning into arguments between commenters personally attacking other commenters or players is increasing, and it's going to stop now.

From now on, a personal attack on another commenter will get you banned immediately. If you're going to troll, you'll get a warning. Repeatedly negative posting is going to be considered trolling. There's a line between valid criticism and trolling.

I said this during the football season, and things quelled for a little bit, but it has come back with hoops season kicking into gear. The Only Colors is not a news site. It's a community. The success of this blog has come because of a group of passionate and respectful Spartan fans from across the country gathering to have valuable discussions on a variety of topics.

There are many, many commenters who have been a part of this site much longer than me. A group that helped shape the personality of this place, which made it so appealing to join.

In recent months, the viewership of this site has increased, and with that come some problems. Too often, there are bad apples turning threads of discussion into attacks on everyone and everything. In the past few weeks, we've sent warnings to a number of commenters to knock it off. If it hasn't stopped, we've banned them.

It's not fair to the people who have been here for years and helped make this a great place. KJ, Pete, LVS and I don't care about the quantity of discussion, we care about the quality.

You want Dan Roushar fired? Wow, that's a hot sports take you've got there. Our motto here has always been "Don't be mean, keep it clean." We also want you to bring something fresh to the conversation. If you're just going to complain about the same shit in every thread, take it elsewhere. You know who you are.

TOC has always prided itself on having a smart and respectful readership, and we're going to make sure it stays that way.
