Joe Rexrode was the first to report that MSU junior center Derrick Nix was arrested and jailed Monday night for operating a vehicle in the presence of drugs and marijuana possession.
Per Rexrode:
Operating with the presence of drugs is a 93-day misdemeanor, and marijuana possession is a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a year in jail. Nix is out on bond and has 10 days to appear in court for an arraignment.
This past season was full of good stories. We were one year removed from Chris Allen and Korie Lucious being kicked off the team in a season full of drama and issues. Lucious was actually arrested for drunken driving before the 2010-11 season, but the charge was later reduced to reckless driving. Now we're back in this mess. Not what you want to see from a kid who many thought could be a captain next season. Now Nix's status is up in the air. MSU released this statement from Tom Izzo:
"Based on the information we have received, Derrick Nix has been suspended indefinitely from our basketball team, and his future with our program is uncertain. He made an irresponsible decision that has put his future with our program in serious jeopardy."
Now, I'm not going to get into all the future possibilities right now. Nix is set to be MSU's only senior next season. I'd say there's no chance Nix gets kicked off the team before his senior season, but I thought the same about Chris Allen, so I have no idea what's going to happen. Izzo made a lot of tough decisions last season to try to stop stuff like this. The story right now is a kid who seemed to turn his priorities around making a huge mistake.
