Football 'Crootin Roundup Is Back On Track

(Apologies for this being a day late. I've been swamped with a few things. Because so much has gone on over the past week, I'm only going to focus on the most-important stories. Rivals/Scout/247 do great work, so you should check them out for all the content)

The biggest news of the week actually came Wednesday night, when Ohio defensive back Darian Hicks committed to MSU. I'll get more detailed on Hicks in a "Welcome Aboard" post in the next day or so. For now, here are stories on Hicks' commitment, the Sound Mind, Sound Body camp and MSU's one-day camp.

Hicks is a Spartan (Rivals) - Rivals listed Hicks as a three-star prospect. Other notable offers included Penn State, West Virginia, Pitt, Virginia and others. MSU was really selective when it came to defensive back offers, but Hicks had earned an offer a while back. He didn't need to compete in Saturday's MSU camp, but did and was one of the top performers by most accounts, before rolling an ankle and sitting out the afternoon. It's possible Hicks ends up as the only cornerback in MSU's 2013 class. 247 rated Hicks as a four-star prospect. Here is their story on the commitment.

"Michigan State was just the right place for me", he stated. "The coaching staff, the facilities and the bond the players have with each other all just felt right so I decided to become a Spartan." camp hot list (Rivals) - SpartanMag ranks the top 10 performers at MSU's camp. Top performers included running back commit R.J. Shelton, Hicks, Illinois defensive end Demetrius Cooper (who earned an offer) and Florida defensive back Matt Milano. camp hot list: underclassmen (Rivals) - SpartanMag also takes a look at the top 2014 and 2015 (ugh) kids.

Michigan State camp recap (Scout) - Similarly, Scout broke down the top performers at MSU camp by offensive skill players, O-Line/D-Line, and linebackers and defensive backs.

Michigan State 7-on-7: top performers (Scout) - MSU had a 7-on-7 camp on Friday, and Scout breaks down the top players.

Kilgore loved time with Spartans (Scout) - Three-star Ohio receiver Trey Kilgore received an offer from MSU in the past week and visited on Wednesday. He said he loved the visit and didn't commit, but admitted he might have to soon.

"My visit with Michigan State was great," said Kilgore. "I didn't commit as I'm planning on visiting Iowa and Kentucky soon. I'm also planning to visit Boston College in the first week of July, however, with the lesson I learned with the whole Cincinnati situation, I may have to pull the trigger soon."

Finley turns heads at SMSB camp (Rivals) - Detroit offensive lineman Dennis Finley had a great performance at the SMSB camp and his stock continues to rise. He didn't attend MSU's camp, because he went to Alabama's camp (see, stock rising). He has some family members who attend or attended MSU, so he's very familiar with East Lansing despite being from Cass Tech. The day after the camp, MSU offered, according to Scout. However, Finley listed Illinois as the top school that has offered him. He also has an Ohio State offer.

Spartans make a move on Chicago DE (247) - As mentioned above, unranked Chicago defensive end Demetrius Cooper performed very well at the MSU camp and earned an offer. He will camp at Notre Dame this weekend.

Bailey next in line? (247) - Cooper's teammate, two-star defensive lineman Khairi Bailey also camped and is getting interest from MSU as a defensive tackle — a need in the 2013 class. He currently holds offers from Purdue and some MAC schools. If he wants to play tackle, he'll need to bulk up. It's something MSU is looking at.

Can Spartans hook Salmon? (247) - As mentioned, MSU is starting to run out of quality defensive tackle targets for 2013. Two-star Florida tackle Devyn Salmon recently received an MSU offer and listed the Spartans as his top school. Salmon attends the same school, Plant City, that Denzel Drone went to. He plans on attending the Notre Dame game this upcoming season.

“Michigan State is my top school,” Salmon said. “If it’s everything I imagine it to be it could be the perfect school for me. I like their coaches, the atmosphere I’ve been hearing about and also all the fan support.”

Allen told he will soon get news (247) - Three-star Detroit cornerback Mycial Allen has been wanting an MSU offer for a long time. He told 247 he was going to hear from MSU early this week. I haven't seen any update on that, but there were reports that Allen committed to Iowa. 247 lists Iowa as the big favorite, so even if he isn't committed, that gives you an idea of where things stand with MSU.

OL commits after 'awesome' visit (Rivals) - In a surprise, Cincinnati OL Alex Gall committed to Miami (Fl.) after an unofficial visit. MSU appeared close to offering Gall, who attends Moeller High School, a developing MSU pipeline.

Henderson tour hits East Lansing (247) - 2014 Virginia quarterback Caleb Henderson is in the midst of visiting a few Big Ten schools. He visited MSU on Tuesday and camped on Wednesday. 247 rates Henderson as the No. 2 pro-style QB in the class of 2014. He currently holds offers from Illinois and some East Coast schools.

McGuire: 'It went awesome' (247) - 2014 Wisconsin quarterback Sean McGuire camped at MSU on Saturday and stayed overnight to visit more with the coaches and tour campus. He loved everything about the visit.

Spartans make early offer to QB (247) - MSU offered 2015 Canadian/Tennessee quarterback Michael O'Connor. I'm just going to leave this here.
