Michigan State picked up a commitment from 2014 Orchard Lake St. Mary's cornerback Jalen Watts-Jackson this week, but it also extended an offer to a 2015 teammate of Watts-Jackson.
Cornerback Tyson Smith received an offer the same day as Jackson, following MSU's camp Sunday.
"The camp went pretty good," Smith said. "The offer was a little surprising, I didn't hear anything from the coaches at first. I was a little shocked."
Despite not hearing much initially, it didn't take long for the Spartans to extend an offer to ...
"MSU called me coach at like 7 a.m. and my coach called me and Jalen in to tell us," Smith said. "I talked to Mark Dantonio the day after that."
Smith also has talked with Watts-Jackson about the potential of playing together in college.
"We've played together since we were like 6 years old, so we have always talked about playing together in college and how good it would be," Smith said. "And he knows I like MSU and if I commit next year, he wouldn't be surprised."
Smith, who grew up a fan of Michigan State, is entering his second year as a starter at OLSM.
-- One of the standouts from Michigan State's one-day camp Sunday was Cleveland St. Edward's wide receiver David Dowell.
Dowell and his twin brother, Andrew, both received their first scholarship offer before leaving camp.
"Camp was pretty good," Dowell said. "I talked with a lot of different position coaches and learn a lot. I got my first offer from Toledo and it was one of the best camps I've been to."
While Toledo decided to offer, Michigan State also had good things to say to the 6-foot-1, 175-pound wide receiver.
"Coach Samuel told me he will continue to follow me," Dowell said. "He came down to one of my basketball practices because he liked my film and wanted to see how I moved. He said he really likes my ball skills."
Dowell attends the same high school as former MSU basketball player Delvon Roe.
"That's a nice connection," Dowell said. "He comes back sometimes so I can talk to him and see how he liked it."
While he was at camp, Dowell did get the chance to see the wide receiver room and weight room at MSU.
He said he would like to get up for a game this fall and that Samuel talked about getting down to see one of his game at St. Edward.
He also has camped or will camp at Michigan, Penn State, Northwestern, Pitt, Ohio State, Tennessee and maybe a couple more. mi
