A.J. Troup surgery: Another receiver bites the dust

Gregory Shamus

The depth chart at receiver gets smaller and smaller, and #AMSUOLHG may have some company if this keeps up.

On Tuesday. A.J. Troup underwent knee surgery, sidelining him for the season. Troup is a walk-on who has impressed since his arrived. He was set to be a redshirt sophomore this season.

Troup joins Juwan Caesar (transfer), Kyle Kerrick (transfer), Jay Harris (rap) and John Jakubik (injury) as MSU receivers who will miss some or all of the 2013 season.

The good news is Aaron Burbridge, Bennie Fowler, Keith Mumphrey, Tony Lippett, Andre Sims Jr., DeAnthony Arnett, Macgarrett Kings, Monty Madaris and others are still there. If MSU could afford to lose some guys at a position, it was receiver.

As for 2013, MSU should be fine at the position. Of the four, only Troup really had a chance of seeing playing time. Fowler is the only senior, so 2014 will feature the same group. What the departures do is put pressure on the need to get some more receivers for the class of 2014 and 15, especially since Kings won't be getting a redshirt for last season.

Trey Kilgore ends up being the only true freshman receiver to join this fall, after Datbull's situation. MSU doesn't have a receiver among its 13 commits in the 2014 class, though Matt Morrissey was told by coaches he could play there.

I do think MSU's receiving corps could take a big step forward this year, but the coaches will need to work a little harder for the future.
