Branden Dawson out 4-5 weeks with broken hand

Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports

More injuries.

Branden Dawson is out 4-5 weeks with a broken bone in his right hand. Dawson told reporters that he broke it when he slammed it against a table this morning while or after watching film.

He will have surgery Thursday night.

It was last January when Dawson and Adreian Payne got in a scuffle at the hotel. No one one injured, though.

Payne has already missed the last four games with a foot issue, and undefeated Michigan comes to East Lansing on Saturday. So this is probably the worst possible time for the injury. MSU was already playing small, and this makes them even smaller in certain situations. If Payne can play, he'll probably have to be the power forward.

Kenny Kaminski, Alex Gauna and Gavin Schilling will likely play more, and the flexibility and rebounding ability of Denzel Valentine is even more important now. Valentine has at least six rebounds in 10 of the last 11 games. Throw in Keith Appling's wrist injury, and the hits keep coming.
