In what can be called a mild upset, Adreian Payne was the first Spartan off the board in the 2014 NBA Draft when he went to the Atlanta Hawks in the 15th pick. While Gary Harris was tabbed by many to be the first Spartan off the board in the draft. Payne overcame exercise-induced asthma, partially due to small lungs, and initial troubles fitting into the starting lineup for the Spartans.
Payne remembered Lacey Holsworth, the 8-year old Spartan who tragically passed away due to cancer this spring, with a jacket with her name embroidered on it during the draft this evening. And now Payne will be taking his inside-outside ability south to Atlanta, where he'll supplement Al Horford and Paul Millsap in the starting rotation.
Best of luck Adreian in the NBA. Let your long-range jumpers and your massive slams light up the South for 82 days to come in the next year.
