Big Ten Football Media Days are going on right now in Chicago, with all 14 head coaches giving 15-minute press conferences today. Amidst the platitudes ("We want to be a more physical team." "Every game's a tough game." "Punting = Winning."), the 2014 pre-camp depth chart was released for the Spartans, and there are few surprises. You can find it here, and let's recap all the positions:
QB: Nothing unusual here, it's Connor Cook, then Tyler O'Connor, with Damion Terry recovering from shoulder surgery over the summer at third string.
RB: Also nothing unusual: Jeremy Langford, then Nick Hill, with Delton Williams at third string.
OL: From left to right, your starters: Jack Conklin, Travis Jackson, Jack Allen, Connor Kruse, Donovan Clark. The lack of depth might catch up here in some spots -- sure, it's four-deep at center, but two of those players (Jackson and Kruse) are starters elsewhere on the line.
WR: Tony Lippett, Keith Mumphery are your starting outside receivers, with R.J. Shelton starting at the "F" spot. Aaron Burbridge and MacGarrett Kings appear to be the first tow receivers off the bench backups.
TE: Concerned about a lack of "OR" in the depth chart? You're about to get your fix. It's Josiah Price OR converted linebacker Jamal Lyles OR Andrew Gleichert for one starting spot in most offensive sets.
DL: Shilique Calhoun and Marcus Rush at the ends, Damon Knox and Joel Heath holding up the middle. NOTE: Lawrence Thomas is 6-4 and 309 pounds, which could potentially cause zoning issues as to residential or commercial use of such a large body.
LB: Darien Harris at the STAR, Taiwan Jones in the middle, Ed Davis at the SAM. One-time cornerback Mylan Hicks at 5-11 and 197 is the back-up STAR linebacker.
CB and S: Once again, little to no surprise: Darian Hicks and Trae Waynes at the corners, Kurtis Drummond and R.J. Williamson at the safety positions.
Special Teams: Returners weren't listed, so everything's the same - Mike Sadler punting, Michael Geiger kicking.
The depth chart doesn't include freshmen or transfers, so there may be a couple of players (Malik McDowell, any of the several linemen MSU took in the last class) that make the two deep out of camp. If you're looking for substantial news, the depth chart release is probably the closest you'll get to that all day today, so savor it.
