(Three) Star Drake Martinez
Story
Drake Martinez was originally an MSU target in the class of 2013 but ultimately decided to join his brother, Taylor in Nebraska. After getting sick in the spring of 2014, Drake went the JuCo route, to Saddleback C.C. in California. The second time around, he chose MSU. The presumption, it seems, is that Drake will fill the "Star" role on the defense.
Hopefully, unlike Jairus Jones or Mylan Hicks, he won't sustain a major injury playing that spot.
Measurables
Rivals listed Drake at 6'2, 200 lbs, running a 4.3 40 in his 2013 profile. He's listed at 6'2 205 with a 4.45 40 in his 2015 profile. LOLS. Both of those 40 times are preposterous. But, it does seem like he's got the frame to add some weight, which would probably be for the best.
Film
This film is from Drake's senior season in 2013 so take it with a grain of salt. Drake certainly appears aggressive enough in the film to play defense for Dantonio; he trucks a guy into the end zone and then gets up and into his face. Regardless of the sportsmanship displayed there, he's got a nasty streak.
I'm not sold on his tackling ability just yet, but most of this highlight film is on the opposite side of the ball because, well, those are more fun to watch.
The Rest of the Class
This seems like a classic sneaky-good addition by Coach D to me. The kid's clearly got athletic ability and contributes on special teams, as well. This was destined to be a relatively small class (thanks, lack of attrition!) and it's close to being rounded out, I believe.
Welcome to the Green and White, Drake!
