Michigan State Spartans: Linking Loquaciously Wants A National Title Game

Zach recaps some Michigan State football and basketball updates

Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports

First Things First: Big Ten has three interim head coaches.

First it was Illinois, then Maryland, and now Minnesota, when Jerry Kill announced his retirement on Wednesday because of health concerns. The specifics were not disclosed, but Kill has battled epilepsy and has a history of seizures.

Defensive coordinator Tracy Cleays will replace Kill. Cleays has called the defense for the Golden Gophers since 2011, after spending time with Southern and Northern Illinois, and Saginaw Valley State.

Second Thing: Anyone want a Kirk Cousins T-shirt?

Cousins' come from behind victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past weekend garnered much attention on social media when he screamed "You like that?!" to the media.

The popularity from the phrase resulted in the former Michigan State quarterback creating a shirt that features the one-liner.

Third Thing: Michigan State is overrated.

"Todd Todd Todd Todd Todd, you got Michigan State, reigning Cotton Bowl champions under Mark Dantonio and got a future first rounder in Connor Cook."

That's my best written Mel Kiper Jr. impression, thank you for the applause/laughter.

Kiper's partner-in-crime on ESPN, Todd McShay, is not entirely sold on the Spartans, stating that he's excited to watch MSU play at the Horseshoe in Columbus next month.

This past Saturday, they let Indiana hang around -- it was a two-point game at the end of the third quarter before Michigan State blew the game open. The Spartans nearly blew a 21-0 lead to Purdue, which is currently 1-6. And while their home win against Oregon was highly touted at the time, it's hard not to view that a little differently in hindsight, given the Ducks' 4-3 record.

He also places Clemson as the most underrated team in the FBS, which is questionable, being that they're ranked third in the AP Top 25.

Fourth Thing: SI.com names Denzel Valentine preseason All-American.

Valentine joins Maryland's Melo Trimble and Nigel Hayes of Wisconsin as the three players from the Big Ten who earned second team honors, along with Kris Dunn (Providence) and Fred Vanvleet (Wichita State).

As a junior last season, Valentine averaged 14.5 points per game while shooting over 40 percent from beyond the arc.

Fifth Thing: Mateen Cleaves is "very disturbed."

Cleaves has yet to be charged, but is caught in the middle of a sexual assault investigation in Genesee County.

The former Michigan State basketball player and 2000 NCAA champion is disturbed by the fact that any information about the possible assault has been revealed to the public and hopes that everyone reserves their judgement until all facts are presented.

Final Thing: Brett McMurphy is riding the Michigan State bandwagon.

So much that he penciled in the Spartans playing Clemson in the Orange Bowl in one-of-two semifinal games, with the green-and-white later setting up a rematch with Baylor in the national championship game.

This is just me, but Baylor is the most overrated team in the country. It's no wonder why they're undefeated this season, look at their non-conference schedule: SMU...Lamar...Rice.
