Welcome Aboard: Cassius Peat

The Spartans get a signing day lock from an Arizona linebacker

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Story

Cassius Peat is the second Spartan commitment from the state of Arizona joining QB Brian Lewerke. Peat is rated a 3* prospect by both Rivals and 24/7. Both rank him in the top 50 linebackers in the country, as well as a top ten prospect in the state of Arizona. Peat had originally given a "soft verbal" to UCLA in October after visiting Michigan State on October 3 the weekend of the Nebraska game. Peat cooled on UCLA after his verbal commitment and the noted front runners were Michigan State and Arizona State. Peat's primary recruiters were Brad Salem and Ron Burton.

The Measureables

Peat is 6'4" and 235 pounds with Rivals listing his 40 time at 4.73 seconds with a 33 inch vertical. Peat has also played some defensive end and running back in high school but is listed as a linebacker on the recruiting sites. With that size he could either bulk up and play line at Michigan State or become the tallest linebacker on the roster.

The Film

Above is video from Peat's junior season at Corona Del Sol. His speed isn't exactly eye-popping in the film but his strength definitely catches your attention. He lines up often as a standing DE and on a few occasions pushes the tackle 5 yards back and makes a play on either the QB or RB. He seems like he would be a great edge rusher for the Spartans' and can get after it in the offensive backfield. He shows great form in tackling and athletic ability as a pretty good TE as well.

The Class

Peat is one of the final pieces of the puzzle on the 2015 class. He will join Grayson Miller, Tyriq Thompson and possibly Drake Martinez as linebackers in the class.
