I am excited to announce that I am officially committed to Michigan State University Spartans to continue my academic and athletic career!!— Matthew Coghlin (@MatthewCoghlin) June 24, 2015
Michigan State has an offer on the table for the top kicker in the country in 2016 Quinn Nordin (Rockford), but after announcing that his top schools were Michigan and Penn State, the Spartans grabbed the next best thing.
Matt Coghlin, a rising senior placekicker for Cincinnati Moeller (Ohio), committed to MSU following a recent camp held at Spartan Stadium this past week. He told the Detroit Free Press that he was 8-of-10 on field goals during the camp.
Coghlin finished last season 17-of-27 on field goals for Moeller, a school that has a recent pipeline of sending recruits to East Lansing, highlighted by Marcus Rush and Greg Jones.
Coghlin has said that he may gray shirt, meaning that he won't be on scholarship until the spring semester of 2017.
The 2016 commitment class now stands at 20 members, currently ranked seventh on the 247 Sports Composite Rankings, one spot ahead of Michigan. Rivals.com ranks the class fourth in the nation, tied with Michigan for the most commits in the FBS, behind Miami (Fla.) with 21.
