Michigan State's Aerial Powers Fifth Pick in the WNBA Draft

The MSU Forward was the 6th Spartan to be drafted into the WNBA

Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports

The 2016 WNBA draft was held on Thursday night and the Dallas Wings used their first round pick on Michigan State's Aerial Powers. She is only the 6th Spartan to be drafted into the WNBA and the first since 2006.

The pick does not come as a surprise to the Spartan faithful as Powers became the all time leading points scorer in school history this season with 1,817. She had a fantastic year this year passing her own record of most points in a season for MSU as well as leaving East Lansing as the all time average points leader at 18.9 per game.

Michigan State head coach Suzy Merchant was in attendance at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut to support Powers who became the highest drafted Spartan in history at the number 5 spot, a record previously held by Kristin Haynie when she was drafted ninth overall in the 2005 draft.
