Even after their first game of the season, it’s unclear how good this Michigan State team really is and how good they can be. The Spartans were far from perfect against Bowling Green, but things only get tougher this week against Western Michigan.
For the Spartans it was a lot of good mixed with just a little bit of really bad. After early struggles, Brian Lewerke found his rhythm and spread the ball to his young, talented receivers. But LJ Scott, who was supposed to be the team’s best player, couldn’t hang on to the ball. The defense kept Bowling Green from being able to score much at all – but BG’s miscues did most of the heavy lifting in that department.
The Broncos come to East Lansing with an 0-1 record, but looked pretty impressive in the process. They made USC earn everything and stayed perfectly with them until late in the fourth quarter. Western is strong on both sides of the ball, and will be a true test for the strength of Michigan State.
