Michigan State basketball is back.
The Spartans held their annual Midnight Madness event Friday night at the Jack Breslin Student Event Center.
The crowd rose to their feet as the The women’s team came out first, each player entering the stage individually to their song of choice, all joined by sparkler-like fire and wearing green iridescent sequin bomber jackets.
The men’s team followed and after being introduced, they ripped off their warmups, revealing 1979 throwback jerseys. Cheers erupted as the team danced at center court to Michael Jackson’s ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” — released in 1979.
Post-dance, Spartan basketball alumni filled the screen — Gary Harris, Bryn Forbes, Jaren Jackson, Denzel Valentine, Miles Bridges and Draymond Green — all to wish the Spartan teams a successful season.
This year, Suzy Merchant and Tom Izzo were both revealed by a magician allowing the team to announce the upcoming season as celebrating “40 Years of Magic.” Inspired by Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson and the team’s first NCAA Championship in 1979, the men’s team will wear the ‘State’ script jerseys and Nike will sell a replica of Johnson’s No. 33 jersey.
The evening of events finished with the women’s team scrimmaging against their scout team, winning 23-17. Followed by the men’s team scrimmaging, splitting the team into two teams. Team Green started Aaron Henry, Thomas Kithier, Foster Loyer, Gabe Brown and Xavier Tillman. Starting for Team White was Cassius Winston, Kenny Goins, Joshua Langford, Kyle Ahrens and Nick Ward. Team Green beat Team White, 36-32.
The women’s team will open their season Nov. 6, facing Bowling Green at the Breslin Center. The men’s season opener will also be Nov. 6 and they will play in Indianapolis as they face off against Kansas in the Champions Classic.
