What former MSU basketball player would you want on this team right now?

The question is simple. The answer is not.

Let’s cut right to the chase – you get to fly in one player to suit up for MSU this tournament.

We’re talking which player today. Right now. Like, call them and tell them to get here immediately-type now.

You want Magic Johnson? Fine, but he’s 58 years old right now.

You want Drew Neitzel? I mean, he might have to work this Friday. I don’t know.

You want Bryn Forbes? Ahh, now we’re talking.

So, the question is simple – which former Spartan would you want on the team for this tournament right now?

Got it? Great.

Draymond Green

This might be the popular choice, and Tom Izzo would be the first to pay for his plane ticket back to Michigan.

With Green, you’re not just getting tenacious defense and a big who has shooting ability from long range. No – you’re also getting a coach on the floor and someone who brings the fire every single night. This young Spartan team could use a voice like his, and pairing his basketball talent with that doesn’t hurt either.

Gary Harris

Sorry Harris, we’re going to take you away from your NBA season that has you blossoming into stardom and put you back in college.

With Harris back in the green and white, you’re getting a lockdown defender on the perimeter and a guy who can hit 3-pointers at a 40 percent clip – and that’s from pro range. This allows Josh Langford and Matt McQuaid to come off the bench, and whoever he is guarding would probably rage quit by halftime.

Denzel Valentine

The tournament didn’t work out well his senior year, so we’re going to give him another go at it.

If you thought he was good during his AP Player of the Year season, imagine him coming back with two years of NBA experience under his belt. With Valentine, you get back one of the greatest passers in MSU history and a point guard that can also score in a variety of ways. He was a quarterback, coach on the floor or whatever cliché you want to use when he was at MSU – so why not bring that back?

Bryn Forbes

Fresh off leading the Spurs in scoring in a loss to the Rockets, we figured his hot hand would be helpful this March.

It’s obvious what Forbes will give this team if he was to join for the tournament – lethal outside shooting. Imagine having a small ball lineup of Cassius Winston, Bryn Forbes, Matt McQuaid, Miles Bridges and Jaren Jackson. Or just having Forbes ready to cook on the standard starting lineup with Langford off the bench. HOO BOY.

Travis Trice

Trice just earned the Australian National Basketball League MVP, so you know he’s in a perfect rhythm right about now.

Trice led the 2015 team to the Final Four as a No. 7 seed with a roster that doesn’t match up to today’s. Imagine what he could do with this lineup. Trice is the dream combination of scoring and passing ability on offense, and his presence would allow MSU to have either himself, Winston or both on the court at the same time.

Deyonta Davis

The 6-foot-11 big man would be a junior right now had he stayed at MSU, but he’s starting to find his footing in the NBA.

MSU’s front court depth is already strong, but this would just make it flat-out unfair and give MSU a ton of options. Does Nick Ward come off the bench, and for how long? Do you just tell Gavin Schilling and Xavier Tillman to use all five fouls – and make them count – throughout the game? A lot of options, not a lot of downside.

Someone else?

Zach Randolph is up there, but he can still ball. Does Matt Costello tickle your fancy? Or do you want to see Adreian Payne’s game alongside Jaren Jackson’s? Or anyone else that you would love to see fly in to play for MSU this tournament? Let us know in the comments.
