MSU football: Pro Day, scrimmage and other notes

A quick look at MSU football happenings

Basketball? Not interested in it...until next November.

With 161 days until our Spartans kick off the football season, let’s take a dive into some green and white notes.

MSU Pro Day

MSU is holding its Pro Day on Friday for NFL scouts to check them out. OL Brian Allen, LB Chris Frey, RB Gerald Holmes, DE Demetrius Cooper and K Brett Scanlon will be working out as one of them look to extend MSU’s streak to 51 straight years with a player selected in the NFL Draft.

All indications point to Brian Allen being MSU’s best shot at extending the streak as he was the lone Spartan invited to the NFL Combine a few weeks back. Back in January, NFL draft expert Mel Kiper said Allen could potentially be a late round pick.

Defense wins first scrimmage

MSU held its first scrimmage on Thursday afternoon at Spartan Stadium with the defense winning, 12-3.

If you’re a glass-half-full kinda person, that means the vaunted defense of 2013 is absolutely returning. If you’re more of a glass-half-empty person, the offense has clearly taken a step back and it’s time to start exploring other quarterback options (kidding).

They simulated it as close as possible to a real game day with referees and piped-in crowd noise, running a 60-play scrimmage that also included special teams.

“You have to watch the film to see how everybody played, but the positive thing is you step back and let people play,” said Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio according to MSUSpartans.com. “We have some young quarterbacks and we let them go today. They made some throws and they made some mistakes, but that’s all part of it. I thought it was a good day today. We practiced and scrimmaged both, so we got a lot done.”

Lewerke elite Fortnite player too?

For those out of the loop, Fortnite is a game that’s essentially 100 vs. 1. Last man standing wins. It’s all the rage with the kids.

MSU football’s Twitter account — which, I have to say, is pretty awesome — hit us with this tweet yesterday.

And, of course, the trash talk chaser...

Gather round the campfire

Actually, maybe no fires will be involved. Sorry about that.

Anyway, here is info on MSU’s upcoming Youth Football Camp:

And for those not quite in the Youth Camp age range, here’s one just for you (provided you have $1,500):

As always, GO GREEN!
