By now, you’ve probably heard that interim president John Engler has named Bill Beekman as Michigan State’s permanent athletic director. And if you haven’t, well here you go.

Beekman was named interim athletic director in February following the resignation of prior AD Mark Hollis. Beekman was officially appointed to his post on Tuesday when the Board of Trustees unanimously voted in his favor.
Men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo, football head coach Mark Dantonio and women’s basketball head coach Suzy Merchant all seemed to endorse the Beekman permanent hire.
Of course, the decision didn’t come without controversy. Engler stated earlier that he would search nationally, and hire an external candidate for the AD position, but that was not the case. Given the recent controversies and turmoil within the MSU hierarchy, there are some people who have an issue with the permanent hire and keeping things in-house.
Beekman is the 19th athletic director in MSU history. He is an MSU alumnus, and has worked at the institution since 1995. He was most recently vice president and secretary of the Board of Trustees — a post he will be stepping down from to take on his new role as AD.
I’m not here to give my opinion on the situation. It doesn’t really matter. But yours does, though! What do you think of the decision to make Beekman the official athletic director at Michigan State University?
