Zachary Winston, a sophomore basketball player for Albion College and younger brother of Michigan State Spartans star guard Cassius Winston, was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Saturday night.
According to the WWMT, the incident occurred Saturday evening at 8:25 pm. The family was contacted following and notified.
While the initial report stated the victim was a 19-year old Albion student, it wasn’t until Sunday morning that the Detroit FreePress confirmed it was Winston.
Sunday afternoon Albion College President Mauri Ditzler released a statement on the incident.
“Last night, our family lost a student. And as families do in difficult times, we must come together to mourn and to embrace one another. We have been in close contact with the student’s family and are doing everything we can to support them,”
The Spartans participated in an exhibition game before the start of the 2019 season. Zachary did not participate due to an injury, but both Cassius and the family’s youngest son Khy–a freshman on the team–played.
The Spartans are scheduled to return to the court Sunday evening in East Lansing against Binghamton. It is unclear if Cassius will play.
Michigan State football player Elijah Collins, who graduated from University of Detroit Jesuit High along with the Winston brothers, posted a comment on Twitter Sunday morning.
