TOC Staff Picks: Michigan

Can the Spartans upset rival Michigan? See what our writers think.

NCAA Football: Illinois at Michigan State Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports

The Spartans have lost four straight games to drop to 4-5, while Michigan has bounced back after a tough loss to Penn State. Michigan comes in as about a two touchdown favorite. Can the Spartans pull off the upset? See what our writers think.

Ryan O’Bleness (47-22)

Michigan 21, Michigan State 14

As much as it pains me to pick the Michigan Wolverines to win anything at all, let alone over the Spartans, I’m tired of getting burned by this MSU football team. I was on record last week as saying that Michigan State was not losing to Illinois -- no way, no how. I looked like a genius for about three and half quarters then we all know what happened. I think the Spartans may struggle to move the ball against the Michigan defense, and I see a low-scoring affair on both sides. Although, records don’t matter in this game and Mark Dantonio has had plenty of success in the Big House, so anything can happen.

Much to my disappointment my reverse jinx attempt of picking against MSU last week did not work. Now I just don’t know what to do this week to try and get the odds in our favor so I am going to go ahead and pick with my brain. And my brain just cannot let me pick Michigan State to win this week. The offense showed signs of life last week, but then faltered as the game wore on. They face a tough Michigan defense this week an the MSU offense has not shown the ability to do much of anything against good defenses. I do expect the MSU defense to come to play after last week’s embarrassing finish, but I just don’t think it is going to be enough.

This is bad guys. I’m not sure if you noticed or not, but with my expert eye I’ve noticed that this year’s Michigan State team is, well, not good. Sorry, I know I should sugarcoat it, but it’s the truth. And while Michigan isn’t exactly good, they are playing their best football and have a chance to spike the ball against a rival (likely their last chance this year). I’d never tell anyone not to watch MSU, but for your own sanity and in order to not ruin your weekend, maybe just keep an eye on this one from a distance for a while to see how things are going.

The Spartans have looked awful over the last few weeks, and I don’t expect that to suddenly change. Michigan gets out to an early lead and never looks back, cruising to victory over MSU.

We are hurt. We have beyond questionable coaching. We have a defense that loves giving up 30 to everyone. We have an offense that can’t do anything against teams with a pulse. And on the other end, Michigan has just one thing -- this game. Going three of four against their second rival would be the greatest thing to happen to them in the last 15 years (not even exaggerating). MSU, when it doesn’t win this game in the past, usually keeps it close. But between the injury report, the coaching and the demoralization of the last four games, I can’t see this one being close.

I could spend this space outlining the various paths that might exist for MSU to spring the upset this week. But, here I focus on the hard, cold numbers, which predict a 31-14 win for the team-that-shall-not-be-named from Ann Arbor. I hated typing that SO MUCH.
