TOC Staff Picks: Maryland

Will the Spartans beat Maryland? See what our writers think

NCAA Football: Michigan State at Rutgers Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

The Spartans need a win to gain bowl eligibility, and with Maryland coming to town, that is certainly doable. Check out our staff predictions for the game.

Michigan State 24, Maryland 23

Quite the dramatic senior day. Unless Felton Davis and Co. somehow comes back and the offense looks great. It will probably be a close one. Clearly it’s been a tough season, but Maryland’s downward spiral has been even more awe-inspiring. Kicking will be a trip for both teams.

Let’s change the topic off kicking. Another area of concern is obviously the offense. Never say never against Maryland’s defense though. Everyone can put up at least 20 against them. Bringing the ball into the end zone should be a doozy for the Terps. Only thing the defense can’t do is just revert to its previous six games before Rutgers. Whether you like it or not, this will be an ugly one. Let’s just focus on getting a win.

Bring a friend to the game. And some good beer for tailgating. Buy a ticket for $5 and support the seniors. You’ll have a great time.

ALSO, WHAT DOES THE FIRST LETTER OF EACH SENTENCE SPELL OUT?!? THAT’S RIGHT!!!

With MSU needing a win to gain bowl eligibility, I would expect the Spartans to come out and jump on Maryland early. I think they do, and the Spartans cruise to an easy win over the Terps. Lewerke has a nice senior day, throwing for 3 touchdowns.

I was really hoping that this final game was going to be a lay-up / victory lap for the seniors that capped a 9- or 10-win season, but alas, it was not meant to be. Instead, MSU is fighting just for the honor of getting to take a bus to Detroit in the day after Christmas. But a win is better than a loss and I win is exactly what my computer suggests. I got MSU 37-17, a hair below the line of 20.5. Other than that, no surprises.

Senior day sends the Spartans out winners and into bowl eligibility. Maryland has been whipped by every Big Ten team not named Rutgers and I can’t imagine the Spartans losing to them at home. MSU is going to have enough to rally the troops, knock off the Terps and go bowling in Detroit.

Michigan State has a chance to earn bowl eligibility and send the seniors out with a victory on Senior Day. Michigan State is a bad football team, but Maryland is an awful football team. If Purdue and Nebraska could each hang 40-plus points on the Terps, MSU certainly can score more than enough points to win this one. The Spartans get it done.
