Can the Spartans end the season on a hight note? See what our writers think

NCAA Football: Maryland at Michigan State Mike Carter-USA TODAY Sports

Michigan State and Wake Forest are set to battle in New York, with the Spartans being favored by four points. See what our staff thinks about the game.

No, no, no -- the last few weeks of no MSU football doesn’t have me forgetting how abysmal this season has been. This game isn’t going to quite reach RedBox Bowl levels of futility, but it’ll be another hard one to watch. Whatever. Let’s just get into the offseason so Dantonio can bring the whole staff back again and we can do this all over again.

Is it even possible for MSU to score 27? I don’t know, but I am optimistic. The Demon Deacons have an explosive offense, but their defense gives up nearly 30 points per game and about 410 yards per game. If there was ever an opportunity for Michigan State’s offense to come alive, it’s against this team. MSU has had several weeks to get healthy and game plan for Wake Forest, too. It’s the last ever game as a Spartan for Brian Lewerke, Darrell Stewart Jr. (if he plays), Kenny Willekes, Raequan Williams, Mike Panasiuk, Tyriq Thompson and the rest of the seniors. They’re going to make it count.

Even with a few weeks to prepare, I’m not sure Michigan State is good enough to win this game. Wake Forest has a solid offense, and if they take an early lead, I don’t see the Spartans getting back in it. MSU keeps it close, but Wake Forest wins a close one.

As the self-appointed Chief Optimism Officer for The Only Colors, I am going to say we end the season on a positive note. The computer models seem to back me up on this one. My math says MSU wins 28-24. I am not sure that I believe that, but the stats do suggest that Wake’s offense looks great unless they face a Top 40 defense. Fortunately, MSU still has a Top 40 defense, which I think will carry the day in Yankee Stadium.

This MSU team has checked out. Most of the seniors have proved ineffective and the underclassmen are transferring away. The coaching staff is more concerned with playing it safe and staying under the radar than doing anything to shake things up. All of that is a long way of saying the Spartans are going to have an embarrassing bowl loss... again. Maybe it won’t be as aesthetically awful as last year, but the result won’t be much different.
