Still a full month from the actual start of the 2019 college football season, the first “credible” poll has been released. The preseason “Coaches” Poll was posted Thursday with the Clemson Tigers atop the list and the Michigan State Spartans at #20.
Is it a little snarky to put both credible and coaches in quotation marks? Sure – but a preseason poll named after people who don’t actually fill it out doesn’t exactly feel on the up-and-up either. Fortunately, this grave injustice can be righted... kind of.
This year, our parents at SB Nation have powered FanPulse, a new poll filled out by college football fans around the country. The Top 25 will be compiled every week and released, breaking down not only the national consensus, but also specifically how fans who have signed up through The Only Colors feel. While you may not be a household name making over a million dollars a year, you probably watch considerably more games than the average coach (or SID). Who do you think is more credible?
The first poll will be published shortly before the start of the regular season and will be updated with your voting each week throughout the year.
After signing up, you will be among a vetted group from Michigan State who will answer a weekly survey of Spartans fans developed by SB Nation. The survey will start going out regularly once the season begins, and will be highlighted by a weekly Top 25 ranking by Spartans fans. This is something that should take at most a few minutes a week of participation.
Let’s be honest, Michigan State fans are probably uniquely positioned to put together a top 25 poll. Few fan bases in the country are as openly critical and sincerely honest about their program. In other words, don’t let Michigan fans stuff the ballot box and screw things up.
