Following the Michigan State Spartans big win over in-state rival Michigan yesterday, the Spartans picked up a verbal commit from a Georgia athlete. Shakari Denson hails from Claxton, Geogia and is unranked at this point. The 5-foot-11 player is listed as an “athlete” on 247Sports, but was targeted by Harlon Barnett after the defensive backs coach saw film on him. MSU extended him an offer last week on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Now that the Spartans have made an offer and he’s given a verbal, MSU fans might see ranking services start to give Denson more attention. The 170-pound Denson’s offer sheet did not include any Power-Five programs until Michigan State came along. He held offers from Georgia State, Kent Sate, Ohio, Savannah State, Charlotte, and Kennesaw State.

According to MaxPreps, Denson has 20 tackles this season, 12 solo, and is averaging four per game. he also has recorded two tackles for loss. He has defended three passes, and has three interceptions while averaging 22.7 yards per interception. Last season as a junior, and the season prior as a sophomore, Denson had six interceptions each season.

On offense, Denson has 18 catches this season, averaging 12 yards per catch and 43.2 yards per game. He has three touchdown catches as well. He’s also had three carries with an average 7.3 per carry. However, Denson is likely going to play on the defensive side of the ball at MSU.

Watching the film on him, it is no surprise Barnett made an offer. Denson has great speed and can clearly put himself in a position to make a play on the ball defensively. I bet he can even cover a wide receiver without resorting to blatant holds all game long (see what I did there?)! Clearly when MSU fans think of overlooked cornerback recruits out of Georgia, Darqueze Dennard comes to mind. Hopefully Shakari Denson follows in that same storyline.
