Michigan State Spartans redshirt freshman linebacker Marcel Lewis has reportedly entered the transfer portal, per the Detroit Free Press.
Marcel Lewis becomes only the second scholarship player to enter the NCAA transfer portal since Mel Tucker was hired Feb. 12. https://t.co/2UNjwegxFG

Lewis had opted out of the 2020 season initially due to COVID-19 concerns, but later changed his mind when the Big Ten reinstated the fall season. He was a three-star recruit from Eastpointe who graduated from Chippewa Valley in the 2019 class. He stated he had already lost a family member to the virus, and had another who was “severely sick” in the hospital at the time of his decision to opt out.
Lewis appeared in three games last season, primarily appearing on special teams when playing. He has yet to appear in a game this season, which could have played a role in his decision to enter the transfer portal.
While it is rare a player enters the portal and returns to the same team, that did happen last season with current running back Connor Heyward. Lewis was able to redshirt last season as he only appeared in three games, and as he enters the transfer portal he will have three to four seasons remaining depending on requirements to sit out next season versus potential waivers to play.
Update: Lewis has since confirmed the news himself.
