As the early signing period nears, Michigan State has picked up another commitment for the 2021 class.

Carson Casteel, a three-star linebacker from Florence, Alabama, announced his flip to the Spartans earlier today. He was originally committed to Troy.

According to the 247 composite rankings, the 6-foot-3, 210 pound linebacker is rated as the 86th best inside linebacker in the country and No. 82 overall player in the state of Alabama.

In addition to Michigan State and Troy, Casteel had offers from the likes of Appalachian State, Army, Navy, Kansas, Memphis, and Georgia State, among others.

He is the first linebacker commitment in the 2021 class and pushes the Spartans’ class up to No. 40 on 247Sports and No. 29 on Rivals. In the Big Ten, the Spartans’ class ranks No. 10 on 247Sports and No. 7 on Rivals.

Michigan State now has 19 commitments for the 2021 class and is expected to sign a good chunk of those during the early signing period. The early signing period begins Dec. 16.
