Michigan State enters the contest tonight with a record of 8-4 overall and 2-4 in conference play, but has not played a game since losing to Purdue, 55-54 on Jan. 8. Ironically, the Spartans’ last win was against the Scarlet Knights, 68-45 on Jan. 5th at the Breslin Center.

At the time, Rutgers was ranked No. 15 in the country with a 7-2 record, but the Scarlet Knights’ loss to the Spartans was part of a five-game losing streak that now has the team at 8-6 overall and 4-6 in conference play. However, Rutgers did bounce back last time out with a win at Indiana on Sunday.

The Spartans have never lost a game to Rutgers in 11 total games going back to 1970. Since Rutgers became a member of the Big Ten, Coach Izzo and company are 10-0 against the Scarlet Knights with seven of those wins coming against current head coach Steven Pikiell. With MSU already sitting two games below .500, tonight’s game has the feel of a “must win” contest. Tonight would not be a good time for Rutgers to earn its first win over the Spartans.
