The No. 9/10 Michigan State Spartans (6-0, 3-0) return to Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana for the first time since 2018 to take on Big Ten East Division rival, the Indiana Hoosiers (2-3, 0-2). IU has struggled this season despite lofty expectations heading into the season, but the battle for the Old Brass Spittoon has often been an exciting one this past decade.
Tom Allen became the head coach at the end of the 2016 regular season, being elevated to the role following the sudden resignation of Kevin WIlson. He has quickly built a strong team at IU heading into his fifth season. That includes beating the Spartans, Penn State Nittany Lions and Michigan Wolverines last year for the first time in Indiana’s history, and finishing the season ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll, No. 8 in the Coaches Poll, and No. 11 in the College Football Playoff rankings before losing to Ole Miss in the Outback Bowl.
While the Spartans enter the matchup undefeated, the Hoosiers certainly hope to keep the Old Brass Spittoon down in Bloomington. The Spartans lead the trophy series 48-14-1 since the winner took home the trophy for the first time in 1950. The Brass Spittoon is believed to have been in use from as early as when IU was formed almost 190 years ago in 1820. All-time, MSU is 48-17-2 against Indiana, and holds a 22-10-1 record in Bloomington. The Spartans last lost on the road there in 2016 and have lost there just one other time (2006) this century.
